International Cuisine | Monday, first period

Class today was met at Portalocity by Hannibal wearing a lightweight suit much less formal than the previous week's. "Good morning." He nodded to them. "This week, in deference to those of you who had difficulties with the utensils last week, and because there was a request for coffee, we will be heading to Addis Ababa, the capital city of Ethiopia, for some traditional food of the region."

He smiled. "This food is eaten with your fingers, which hopefully you are all fairly adept at. And coffee in Ethiopia is very serious business; there is an entire ceremony surrounding it, which I have arranged for us after lunch."

He let any discussion die down, then raised one hand in caution. "There are many local languages, the primary one being Amharic. Unlike our previous outings, I do not speak it, either, but most of our hosts should speak English or French, and they do have English menus. Please continue to be courteous and polite, and if you have any difficulties, ask."

He waited for any last-minute questions, then waved them through the portal, which dropped them off on a wide and somewhat dusty street, bright and sunny, in front of Kategna restaurant.

Sit and eat!

Here's (http://migrationology.com/2014/01/kategna-restaurant-addis-ababa-ethiopia/) a good breakdown of the sorts of food, along with descriptions and pictures.

Lottie did a little bit of surreptitious suspicious peering at the food this time around. It was all piled into little lumps on a big flat piece of weird bread! It was about as far outside of her personal food paradigm as she'd seen yet.

She looked around for someone to watch eat first to make sure she got it right. It wasn't like Lottie was going to refuse to eat anything. Ever. She just wanted to see what she was meant to do with the giant roll of spongy bread stuff, first.

She was welcome to watch Hannibal, if she liked; he expected some of the students would. He tore a bit of injera off one roll, then held it in his fingers and used it to pick up some of the doro wat from the communal plate, wrapping it neatly so it didn't fall or drip as he ate.

He did seem to be the obvious candidate for watching! Lottie studied what he was doing carefully, then tore off a bit -- a large bit -- of her own bit of injera and reaching for the same bit of food.

There was some bouncing and squeaking following her actually eating it. "Cor, that is WELL spicy!"

She was not complaining.

Hannibal chuckled. "The main spice in it - and many other foods here - is berbere. It's a mixture of chili peppers, garlic, ginger, basil, korarima, rue, ajwain, nigella, and fenugreek." He stopped to taste another bit. "With a bit of extra ginger and garlic in this."

"I don't know what half those are," Lottie said cheerfully. "It's a different sort of spicy from curry, innit." She tore off another piece of injera -- like a professional, this time -- and this time went for a bit of the key wat.

Re: Sit and eat!

[identity profile] never-dull.livejournal.com 2015-05-25 04:40 pm (UTC)(link)
"It is," Hannibal agreed. "Although some of the foods here will also have hotter peppers in them, so it never hurts to be careful."

He was going for the kitfo next himself.

This was more like it. Okay, it wasn't exactly like home, but it was similar to eating there. She tore off pieces of the bread and used them as scoops to try the various offerings. Mmm... spicy but good.

Hannibal grinned at Kaylin. "Less fussy utensils this week?"

"SO much better," Kaylin said around a partial mouthful of food. "And this stuff is delicious."

Re: Sit and eat!

[identity profile] never-dull.livejournal.com 2015-05-27 03:29 pm (UTC)(link)
"I'm glad you like it." Hannibal smiled. "I'm trying to expand your palates, not frighten you off."
notamascot: (Don't Wanna)

Re: Sit and eat!

[personal profile] notamascot 2015-05-29 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Kaylin shrugged. "I'll eat pretty much anything."

You didn't even want to know some of the things she's had to eat in the fiefs, Hannibal.

Re: Sit and eat!

[identity profile] never-dull.livejournal.com 2015-05-30 08:20 pm (UTC)(link)
That was fair enough; she probably didn't want to know what he ate, either.

"I'll try most things, but there are those I'm less fond of." Like fast food.
notamascot: (Kaylin)

Re: Sit and eat!

[personal profile] notamascot 2015-05-30 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
No, she wouldn't ever want to find that out because she'd feel the need to stop him - even if she had to kill him - and that would make her very sad.

"Well, sure," Kaylin said, as if this was the most obvious thing ever. "But you eat what you've got. You don't always have a choice. Here... things almost don't seem real. So much food, so many choices. It's, well, it's certainly not what I'm used to."

Re: Sit and eat!

"It took me some time to become accustomed to it," Hannibal said. "It can be quite an adjustment."

"Was it hard for you too?" Kaylin asked curiously. "I thought you came from a place and time like this one."

Re: Sit and eat!

[identity profile] never-dull.livejournal.com 2015-05-31 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
"I come from a similar version of Earth, and have traveled in time only by aging," Hannibal agreed. "But I spent most of my childhood in an orphanage. I can't imagine such places are terribly different in other worlds."
notamascot: (Feeling Low)

Re: Sit and eat!

[personal profile] notamascot 2015-05-31 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
Kaylin's only experience with anything like an orphanage was Marrin's Foundling Hall which was most likely far different from Hannibal's experience. Marrin loved and protected all of her kitlings fiercely. They were well-fed, well-clothed, and knew absolutely that they were loved.

"I can't even imagine how different my life would have been if I'd been in a place like the Foundling Hall," she said quietly. "I envy them a little."

Or maybe a lot sometimes.

"But, well... I survived." Even if some of the things she'd done and had to do still gave her nightmares and had given her a deep sense of being a terrible and thoroughly unworthy person.

Re: Sit and eat!

[identity profile] never-dull.livejournal.com 2015-05-31 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
"It was..." Hannibal thought about it. "Both better and worse than being left on my own. But it was far from luxurious, and for the food, you ate what you were given, and it was designed to be more or less nutritious, not tasty."

Re: Sit and eat!

[personal profile] notamascot 2015-05-31 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
"Marrin, she runs the Foundling Hall, she bullies people into making sure the kids have everything that they need. And they all know how much she loves them."

If her face looked more than a little wistful and homesick, well too bad.

"I think you'd have liked being there better than where you were."

Re: Sit and eat!

[identity profile] never-dull.livejournal.com 2015-05-31 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
"Very likely." He probably would have preferred anywhere. "It's good your children have someone to look after them."
notamascot: (Kaylin)

Re: Sit and eat!

[personal profile] notamascot 2015-05-31 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
"There are only human children there," Kaylin said thoughtfully. "I always wondered about that. None of the other races seem to have abandoned children living on the streets."

Re: Sit and eat!

[identity profile] never-dull.livejournal.com 2015-06-03 07:30 pm (UTC)(link)
"There are a number of possible reasons for that," Hannibal noted. "Some more charitable than others."
notamascot: (Kaylin)

Re: Sit and eat!

[personal profile] notamascot 2015-06-04 03:10 am (UTC)(link)
"Yeah, but half the people I ask don't really know and the others tell me I'm being rude," Kaylin said, "So... it's hard to say in Elantra."

Re: Sit and eat!

[identity profile] never-dull.livejournal.com 2015-06-04 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
And given Kaylin's demeanor, there was a better than even chance she was being rude, though it could also be people's aversion to questioning.

He nodded. "And I suspect the answer is a combination of a number of things. Where people - of any species - are involved, the truth is rarely simple."
notamascot: (Kaylin)

Re: Sit and eat!

[personal profile] notamascot 2015-06-08 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, she most definitely was. It was just the way she was - blunt and uncompromising.

"Yeah..." Kaylin sighed and took a bite of the food the waiter slid in front of her. "People are weird."

[identity profile] never-dull.livejournal.com 2015-06-08 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
"I should hope so." Hannibal smiled. "It's one of the things that makes life more interesting."
notamascot: (Kaylin)

Re: Sit and eat!

[personal profile] notamascot 2015-06-09 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
"Personally, I think life could stand to be a little less interesting sometimes," Kaylin admitted.

Lottie bounced a little in her seat as she watched the ceremony. Coffee was like the forbidden fruit! She was tres excited to get some, today.

Talk to Hannibal!

He's here!

OOC!

[identity profile] never-dull.livejournal.com 2015-05-25 04:12 am (UTC)(link)
The coffee ceremony is pretty freaking awesome, y'all. I've had one once (Eritrean section at EPCOT), and the coffee was amaaaazing.

And now I want Ethiopian food, of which there is not ONE SINGLE RESTAURANT in all of northeast Ohio, apparently. Sigh.

Re: OOC!

[personal profile] bestatmystery 2015-05-25 03:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Now I want Ethiopian food, and I live right outside the Ethiopian food capital of the United States (according to a recent study of the most unique food types per state + DC map that I saw last week, anyway), but my Ethiopian food buddy is in the midst of finishing a big case.

Sigh.
