Outdoor Adventure Time!, Tuesday, period 1

Class met at the Portalocity office, today, where Eliot and Parker waited.

"So we're gonna do somethin' slightly different, today," Eliot said, bouncing ever so slightly on his toes. God, but he loved having two functional legs. "Basically a field trip."

“We’ll be grabbing water, sunscreen, snacks and so on when we get there,” Parker added, looking pretty buzzed. “Hurry up! Last one through winds up in Budapest!”

"That's not true." Eliot really hoped it wasn't true, he was going to take the end of the line and he never much liked Budapest. "Parker, no sending anyone to Budapest!"

Parker snickered. Eliot, you just stay easy.

When they got through the portal, they’d find themselves at the beginning of the Virginia Creeper Trail, with mountain bikes, safety equipment, and extra supplies waiting.

"Welcome to the Virginia Creeper Trail," Eliot said. "One of the longest continuous biking trails around. It's got somethin' for everyone, nice scenery, historic railroad bridges, some easy rides -- and some sharp downhills for you speed demons."

“Okay! Whoever has never ridden a bike before, stick with Eliot. He’ll help you out.” She gave them her most manic grin. “If you have, super. Get set up!”

"That includes helmets!" Eliot noted, giving Parker a pointed look. "For everyone, regardless of skill level. Trust me, you don't want a concussion. They suck a lot."

“If they crack their skull open, they’ll learn,” Parker said with a snort.

"Or they'll die and you'll be sad." They should maybe not talk about students dying. "Which is way less likely to happen if you all follow directions and wear a goddamn bike helmet. It ain't dorky if everyone's doin' it."

"Trying doing this," Parker said at one point. She stood up in the pedals and jumped up and down, making the bike bounce. Very useful for rocks!.. also just bouncing.

PARKER THIS WAS A TERRIBLE IDEA. ENCOURAGING MABEL? TERRIBLE IDEA.

"Ohmygosh! That's so awesome!" Mabel stood up on her pedals too, and gave a little hop. True to form, the bike bounced as she did so, and only wobbled a little bit along the way. "Half bike, half rabbit! Mabel Pines has tamed the wild babbit!!"

"Which you have to do in order to tame the downhill rocks!"

What? SHE WAS HELPING. SHE WAS THE TEACHER AND SHE WAS TEACHING, NARRATIVE. WHAT IS THE PROBLEM?

"Of course I do!" This class was the best! It was probably going to get her killed, but that was fine. She'd brought her grappling hook along just in case. "Do you think I can get a lot of air if I bounce just right?"

"That and speed," Parker said authoritatively. She paused, and then added, "It's better if there's something like grass on the other side the first few times, because road rash sucks." It did, but it had never stopped Parker before.

Also she would approve of the grappling hook, a lot.

"Oooh..." Mabel looked around for a moment, and then grinned over at Parker. "Keep an eye out for a grassy hill for me! Me and this bike are going to fly!"

This could only end in tears.

And broken bones. But Parker was surprised they hadn't had anyone break anything or drown yet, so.

About twenty minutes later, she cackled maniacally, and aimed her bike for a low hill, faster and faster and

AIR
Was

AWESOME!

And Mabel was going to be barreling downhill shortly behind her, hollering in delight and catching some serious air!

It... was kind of a miracle she landed it at the bottom. But then, given all of the crazy stunts she'd pulled in Gravity Falls just to keep herself and her brother alive, maybe it wasn't that miraculous.

"YES!"

Parker grinned and offered her hand for a high-five. "Nice! If we were doing that downhill, and not jumping, you'd have to stand up more. Keep your weight back. But this was uphill, and you landed great!"

High-five!

Mabel took herself a moment to preen. Oh yeah, she was not above accepting a little praise, here.

"Is there anywhere on the island that people can go biking like this? I mean, most of town is stairs... I haven't tried the preserve yet..."

There was an idea, though.

"Not so much," Parker admitted with some regret. "Although if you can find a path through the Preserve, that's probably not so bad. I wouldn't go near the Rocky Places though, those things are too steep and sharp, there's no maneuvering. The stairs all over town are great, but will probably get you stopped by Stormtroopers and rickshaws." She hummed and added, "I bet Baltimore has some good skate parks and biking areas, though, that wouldn't be too far off."

"Ooo! I've never been to Baltimore! I'm going to have to get a bike of my own and visit!"

Best of plans! Maybe there were more hills!

Mabel wasn't so unobservant to miss Eliot's reaction to the jump, no. She was even going to turn a sheepish little grin and a 'hee' to match in his direction.

"Nailed it?"

"Oh, I'll be fine," Mabel replied, and then she pulled her grappling hook out of... somewhere. "Gravity and I go way back."

Yeah, but where was the fun in teaching other places?

"Of course not, silly," and it was a shame she wasn't within 'companionable shoulder clapping' distance, or she totally would have done some of that. "That's how people get hurt!"

And with that, she tucked the grappling hook away again, gave her bell a little deedle-dee ring, and was quite happy to start pedaling again.
