Fun with Magic | Friday, First period

Class was back on the lawn this week, and Bob was waiting with a large cardboard box in front of him. Inside were a number of odd-shaped lumps in various bright colours. Once everybody was gathered, Bob grinned at them.

"This week, we're going to play a bit of a game. Everybody steps up and gets one bat. You have until the end of class to use it. Every hit you get on someone else scores you a point. Every point they get on you loses you one. And there won't be any cheating; the bats keep their own scores."

His grin widened. Was everybody frightened yet? "That's not the only thing they do, though. You see, these bats are all enchanted. Every hit will impart a minor enchantment to your target - it might turn their skin bright blue, or make their ears ring, or cause them to only speak in rhymes. It might make them extremely clumsy. It also might make them just a bit faster than normal, or nearly invisible. It might make them extremely coordinated."

He sobered for a minute. "Nothing will last longer than a few minutes, and none of it is truly harmful. However, if you would prefer not to participate, by all means take up a bat and hit a tree or fence instead. You won't gain any points, and so long as your classmates are honourable, you won't lose any, either. And we will all be honourable," he told them sternly.

"Those of you with magic are free to use your own as well," Bob said, "but it may behave...unpredictably, with these around. It's your risk to take. As for the rest - work for yourselves, form teams, run, hide - whatever you like. The entire lawn is fair game."

He clapped his hands together and beamed. "Any questions?"

"And really, that would be truly tragic," Elsa laughed, shaking her head. "Whatever would I do? Turn blue, I suppose..."

She actually really liked the color blue, for the record.

Maybe not enough to want to be blue, but it wouldn't be the worst outcome possible.

"Turn blue," Anders repeated, nodding. "Maybe try to convince people you're Raven's secret twin -- actually, that might be fun."

"I think Raven would probably have better luck convincing people of that," Elsa noted, thoughtfully. "Blue or not, I'm not nearly as flexible with my appearance as she is, I'm afraid."

... Imagine that.

"Her fraternal twin?" Anders suggested, all mock brightness. "Same skin tone, different features. It'd make perfect sense!"

"Complete and perfect sense," Elsa agreed, lifting her free hand to cover her mouth, trying to stifle a possible oncoming fit of giggles. "We're both from the past. And not that far apart in the grand scheme of time and the entire universe, at that..."

... Ish!

"And you're both human and female, and from versions of this Earth, so really you're like sisters already," Anders said, and tapped Elsa's shoulder lightly with the tip of his bat. "Tag, by the way."

Elsa's mouth fell open, but no noise came out at all. She frowned a little, and then tried again.

... Nope. So, that was a thing.

So she just sort of gave Anders a half-squint, and reached her own bat to bop him back.

Ha!

"Oh sweet Andraste, I made you mute," Anders said, dancing back after the blow. "I don't think you can possibly -- hic"

As he hiccuped, a little purple bubble floated out of his mouth. Anders frowned at it, confused.

"Hic"

A second purple bubble joined the first.

Bubble hiccups! An expression of pure, impish glee crossed Elsa's face at that, and she gave a silent laugh of delight. Revenge was sweet, indeed.

And, in fact, she was winking and holding her bat in front of her, because, since Anders had started it, she was quite willing to continue on this way.

You'd created a monster, Anders. A very quiet monster.

Anders frowned at her. "It's not fu --"

The sentence was lost in a haze of hiccups. Bubbly hiccups.

"It's a little funny," he conceded, when it had passed, and raised his bat again. "Another go?"

Quiet Elsa monsters were sort of adorable.

'Another go,' Elsa mouthed, giving an enthusiastic nod. This was silly. It was ridiculous in a way that she'd never really thought magic could be, and now she was curious to see what other zaniness might come about.

Mute wasn't so terrible, really. Especially since it was only temporary. And if Anders was willing to keep doing this, even after a fit of bubble hiccups, then why not?

Elsa lifted her bat with one hand, putting the other in the air behind her and mimicking a swashbuckling pose that she'd seen in a book illustration once. And then she thrust the bat forward again.

Elsa was by no means a swashbuckler.

Anders was no swashbuckler ever, and her bat slid past his attempt to guard to reach his chest. He ignored the very funny feeling it caused to twist and stab the bat blindly in Elsa's direction.

He didn't realize he was hovering three inches off the ground until that was done.

And there went his bat, poking her in the shoulder. She barely noticed, though, given the whole...

"Anders, you're floating," she observed, but before she could revel in having her voice back, she added, "F-L-O-A-T-I-N-G."

A beat.

"Well, that's odd. O-D-D."

And then, with a little squint, she took another swing, if only to try to save face.

"And you're spelling," Anders said, following it up with a few more purple hiccups. "I think I'd rather float."

He managed to dodge the blow through the unconventional but effective method of being completely uncertain how to move while floating, doing it wrong, and falling down, D-O-W-N.

He started hovering again as soon as he got his legs back under him.

"I'd almost certainly rather be floating, yes. Y-E-S."

Well, then. Elsa blushed just a little, looked away for a moment, embarrassed, and then straightened her shoulders and held up a hand in case he went for another topple.

"Are you okay? O-K-A-Y?"
