Driver's Education, Thursday, Period 1

Before starting this job, it had not entirely occurred to Brian that for most people, driving a car was not second nature, although to be fair it wasn't like he'd gotten a lot of time to think about it ahead of time. (Also, he'd learned by stealing one when he was fourteen, but that was so not the point.) And he was a lot better rested this week, having picked the lock gained access to the storage room McIntosh had told the landlord to put the contents of his allegedly-furnished apartment in, since Hale was on the other side of the country and couldn't give him the key.

The setup in the Danger Shop was the same as it had been last week: city street, night, four sleek little sports cars. Except this time Brian said, "Okay, so. Steering and braking, you'll get those, it just takes practice. Better to get that in here than out in the real world where you might get hurt. Some of you really need to work on shifting gears, though." Like, really. If these were real cars and not hard light holograms he wouldn't let some of you back in them. "So let's go over that." Brian patiently walked the class through how to know when to change gears before declaring, "And now? We race. Same deal as last time, give it a shot and then if you want some more practice, just wait until everybody else is through.

"Oh, and if you have any questions or anything, I'm here for you. If you'd rather talk to someone else, Ronan here will be my assistant for this class." Although Brian was probably the more approachable option.

Anders tried to put the gear-shifting advice into practice, overthought it ... and ended up stalling out. Several times. He limped across the finish line eventually, but not without a lot of swearing.

It was still weird to be a teacher's assistant (if Gansey could see him now!) but Ronan made sure not to look like it was weird. He had his arms crossed and looked as he always did.

Sour with a helping of angry on the side. But, he'd help you out if you needed it.

This was fast becoming his favorite part of the week. Sliding behind the wheel of the car, his hands found their spots on the wheel and his foot hovered over the gas.

When it was time to go, he punched it and punched it hard. His stomach lurched into his throat and he grinned wildly. He made one small miscalculation but it was enough to throw him off and make his time not what he wanted it to be.

Still. He had to wipe the grin off his face before getting out of the car.

How fast could these go? How fast could they get there?

Jalian took the corners at a speed that would probably have given any other teacher (or passenger) a heart attack, but what was the point in going slow? She might as well walk in that case!

Jalian would be driving until they were kicked out, thank you.

Or until she wrecked enough times to make herself sore, trying to go faster. One of those.

Thorin could shift just fine. That was not his problem. His problem was that he crashed.

A lot.

This would not bode well should he ever drive for real outside this room. But on the plus side, he'd managed to flip his car movie style twice so far.

Bitchin'.

"These cars are too fragile," Thorin declared once he finally managed to get to the end of the race without a Michael Bay style explosion.

"Too fragile and too complicated," Anders agreed, with a slight raised eyebrow caused by Thorin's many crashes. "I don't understand why they need more than one gear. It takes all my attention just to steer."

Yes, he was a poet today.
