History of Earth - Tuesday, Period 2

When the students entered the Danger Shop today, they would find that it was dark, extremely hot and that they were walking on a partially molten surface.

Jones immediately jumped into the lecture when everyone arrived. Introductions? Pff. That was for other classes.

"Welcome to the History of Earth," Jones said as the students entered. She did not seem bothered by the heat at all. "What you are looking at is the Hadean eon of the earth. This is considered to be the formative state of this planet 4.5 billion years ago. It is characterized by high volcanic activity, frequent collisions from other celestial objects and extreme temperatures. What you feel now temperature wise does not even begin to illustrate the high heat involved. You would have no doubt been incinerated by now if we were to simulate the temperatures involved even if you were able to breathe the atmosphere at this time. This eon ended approximately 4,000 million years ago. As there isn't much significance to this period other than the formation of earth we shall move forward."

She then clicked the remote for the Danger Shop and the environment changed. Now everyone was underwater. Please note that everyone could breathe just fine. The might feel cold and wet now though. Didn't seem to bother Jones though. Funny that.

"This is the Silurian period which began approximately 443.7 years ago. During this time period a large ocean occupied most of the northern half of the globe. This time period is significant for the formation of several lifeforms including the evolution of fish with bones as well as the formation of a jaw. This may seem insignificant to you, however since most of you eat and talk I assume you can understand how difficult it would be to do those tasks without a jaw. This time period was also significant as moss and other small lifeforms began to grow outside of the water. This would evolve into vegetation which would cause evolution to move forward from life in the ocean to land where food was more plentiful."

She then handed out documentation for students to review. Somehow they remained dry despite being underwater. "Please review these handouts and then attempt to identify three different life forms from the documentation. Next week we will be reviewing the Triassic period and looking at the evolution of dinosaurs."
