Outdoor Adventure Time!, Tuesday, period 1

A handwavy email had gone out letting the students know to meet on the beach by the lighthouse. Eliot and Parker waited for them a little ways down, away from the boardwalk. Eliot was dressed for the location in a pair of cargo pants, a fishing vest, and a floppy brimmed hat. He was even barefoot, though that was mostly because he hated trying to get sand out of his boots.

Parker was wearing a wetsuit, and had a selection of them on a movable rack with her. Also a large selection of windsurfing boards behind her, and the excited look of someone who was about to do something dangerous. Or, you know. Just looking like Parker.

“Welcome to Outdoor Adventures!” Parker said, looking over the students, grinning at the familiar faces. “And Outdoor Chilling Out, with Eliot.”

Eliot sighed. "Not everyone is an adrenaline junkie. Which is fine. The whole point of this class is to get you all outside and exploring. Whether that's by jumping off things, or by chilling out. Parker's terrible at the low-key stuff, so we're splitting the load a little." He clapped his hands together. "First thing's first, which around here is apparently introductions. Like we said, I'm Eliot, she's Parker. Some of you'll insist on 'Mr. Spencer' and 'Ms. Parker' --" He totally wasn't eying Kathy when he said that, "-- which is up to you, but honestly, it's the summer. Eliot and Parker works just fine."

“So yes, tell us what you want to be called. It doesn’t have to be your real name,” Parker added. “But it’s what I’ll call you for the rest of the term, so don’t pick something you hate. And then we wind-surf!” EEEEEEEEEE.

"Or fish," Eliot said. "Or go lookin' for shells and rocks and things." He jerked his thumb towards a set of fishing poles and tackle set up down the beach a little ways. "Fishing will happen upwind of surfing. You do not want to catch your classmates instead of a fish. Or shark or sea monster or whatever's lurking out here."

Eliot's options would not quite be entirely free of adrenaline, no.

“Pick an option, give us a name, and get started!” Parker paused, and added, “The wet suit is not optional if you’re going in the waves. Our boyfriend totally ended up with pneumonia when he thought he could go swimming in cold water.”

Eliot managed not to twitch visibly at the mention of their 'boyfriend'. That was still a new term for him, okay? "Yeah, you all aren't invulnerable. Or if you are, we don't wanna hear about it, and you have to wear one, anyway. So. Tell us your name and any other random fact you want us to know about you, and then let's have some fun."

“Kathy and Toby are our TA’s.” If you didn’t know that before, guys, now you do! “So if you need extra help or are afraid of Eliot, you can ask them questions.”

Eliot opened his mouth to point out that he wasn't doing the scary stuff, then just gave up. He pointed to one of the students. "You start."

"Yes!" Alluka said, because that sounded like a great idea. Then she paused for a moment before suggesting, a little tentatively: "We could use them as decorations for a sand castle?"

You know, if Mabel wanted to make a sand castle...

"Well, I don't knooooow..." Mabel pursed her lips a little, looking upwards thoughtfully. "I mean, we can't possibly make a sand castle unless we're going to build a moat, too..."

Biiiig grin.

"We can do that!" Alluka wasn't quite sure how they'd do it, but they could totally do it. "It'll look pretty."

That wasn't the point of a moat, but they could make it look pretty anyway.

[identity profile] rhymeswithtable.livejournal.com 2015-05-05 01:33 pm (UTC)(link)
"It'll look so pretty," Mabel agreed. "We can build up a little wall around it using more of the rocks we find!"

There was no shortage of rocks! And a moat would be easy, right? It was just a matter of digging deep enough and then filling it with water!

But they had no bucket, Mabel. They had no bucket.

"There's a lot of rocks," she agreed. "We can use all the best ones."

Alluka looked around eagerly. "What spot do you think is the best for our castle?"

So they could build next to a tide pool! And then there would be fishes in their moat, too! And GINORMOUS CRABS! In fact, Mabel was staking one out right then, pointing toward it, and then waving Alluka over.

"Here," she declared. "We can give our castle a view of the ocean!"

... The ocean was over there, Mabel. That was a glorified puddle.

Alluka glanced at the real ocean and then back at their pool.

"This is the ocean too?"

She was willing to believe it!

Re: Windsurf/fish/beachcomb

[identity profile] rhymeswithtable.livejournal.com 2015-05-05 01:50 pm (UTC)(link)
"It's part of it," Mabel agreed. "It's just taking a little break from the whole rest of the ocean until the tide comes back in!"

Wasn't it awesome? There were totally starfish in there! And snails!

Re: Windsurf/fish/beachcomb

[personal profile] that_oldsaying 2015-05-05 01:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Her eyes went bigger. "Even the ocean needs breaks?"

That was news to her!

"We'll take good care of it then, won't we?"

Re: Windsurf/fish/beachcomb

[identity profile] rhymeswithtable.livejournal.com 2015-05-05 02:03 pm (UTC)(link)
"Everything needs to take a break sometimes," Mabel agreed, nodding her head enthusiastically. "Here, come look!"

She leaned over the tidepool, and started pointing out all the little things that were hanging out inside it.

"There's a crab, and there's a minnow, and over there is some seaweed, and that's... a beer can. Ew." She wrinkled her nose, and then reached in to fish that out to set to the side so she could find a recycle bin for it later. "Aaaand that's a periwinkle, and those are some mussels..."

Alluka crouched down to watch with avid eyes as Mabel pointed things out. She wasn't going to remember half the names later on, but it was a lot of fun.

"Why did you take the can out?" she asked, when Mabel paused.

Re: Windsurf/fish/beachcomb

[identity profile] rhymeswithtable.livejournal.com 2015-05-05 02:08 pm (UTC)(link)
"Because it isn't supposed to be there," Mabel explained. "It's people-garbage, and it can hurt all the little animals I just pointed out."

A pause.

"And you can get a nickel for it if you take it to the recycle place and give it to the people there."

Re: Windsurf/fish/beachcomb

[personal profile] that_oldsaying 2015-05-05 02:20 pm (UTC)(link)
"The little animals can't make it a home?" she asked. "If you took the front off it, it'd be a tiny little house."

Re: Windsurf/fish/beachcomb

[identity profile] rhymeswithtable.livejournal.com 2015-05-05 02:21 pm (UTC)(link)
"Maaaybe if you took the front off of it," Mabel mused, looking at the can thoughtfully. "But you know what it would be even better for?"

She filled it up with water, and then pushing some sand out of the way with one hand, emptied it out into the hole she'd made.

"Filling up our moat!"

"It's like a little bucket!" she squealed. "It's perfect!"

A beat.

"And we can use it to help dig too, can't we?"

Re: Windsurf/fish/beachcomb

[identity profile] rhymeswithtable.livejournal.com 2015-05-05 02:32 pm (UTC)(link)
"We probably could, just so long as we're careful," Mabel agreed, pointing at the open end. "This part is sharp, and we don't want to hurt ourselves on it."

Because it was kinda scuzzy. And rusty. And gross.

Re: Windsurf/fish/beachcomb

[personal profile] that_oldsaying 2015-05-05 02:41 pm (UTC)(link)
"And we'd get blood on our clothing." Because that was clearly the most worrisome part of getting hurt by a rusty, gross can, yes. "Should we build our castle right here?"

Re: Windsurf/fish/beachcomb

[identity profile] rhymeswithtable.livejournal.com 2015-05-05 02:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, it was definitely a factor...

"Right here looks perfect! And there are plenty of pretty rocks we can use, too!"
that_oldsaying: (tell you a secret)

Re: Windsurf/fish/beachcomb

[personal profile] that_oldsaying 2015-05-05 02:55 pm (UTC)(link)
"Perfect place!" she decided, since Mable had given her approval to it. "We should... do the castle before the moat, right?"

Re: Windsurf/fish/beachcomb

[identity profile] rhymeswithtable.livejournal.com 2015-05-05 02:58 pm (UTC)(link)
"Probably," Mabel agreed, nodding enthusiastically. "If we do the castle first, we can build it as big as we want, and we don't have to worry about filling the moat in with sand as we go!"

Re: Windsurf/fish/beachcomb

[personal profile] that_oldsaying 2015-05-05 03:04 pm (UTC)(link)
"The bigger castles are more fun," she offered. "We should make a really big one!"

Re: Windsurf/fish/beachcomb

[identity profile] rhymeswithtable.livejournal.com 2015-05-05 04:15 pm (UTC)(link)
"I bet," Mabel ventured, "we could make the biggest sandcastle on the whole entire beach!"

... Possibly also the only one, but details.

[personal profile] that_oldsaying 2015-05-05 04:31 pm (UTC)(link)
"That would be amazing!" Alluka clapped her hands together, then carefully set her bunny down on the sand and grinned. "We should start here, and build around the bunny. The castle belongs to him!"

"His very own castle, and he gets to be king? I love that plan!"

If Waddles was allowed to come to class, he could have been the duke or the queen or something. Waddles was very adaptable that way.

Alluka drew a line in the sand with her foot, gauging where the castle should go and how many rocks they'd need.

(Lots. They would need lots.)

"Well, kings have to have a castle, right?" she asked reasonably, then paused and looked at the castle on the island.

"Who is the king of that castle?" The school, Alluka, the school.
