International Cuisine | Monday, first period

"Good morning, ladies," Hannibal greeted his class. "Since we are at the very first class this term, if you're new, you should know that it's the day for introductions. And you won't have had time to get sick of them yet." He grinned.

"For those of you who haven't met me, I am Doctor Hannibal Lecter. Introductions in my class are as much a matter of necessity as tradition - we will be experiencing new things, and it is vitally important I know if there are things that I should be keeping from you. So. I would like for you to each give us your name and where you're from, but also any things you may be allergic to, and any foods you can't or won't eat. Also, I would like to hear if there are any particular foods or cuisines you would be interested in trying."

He spread his hands. "We have no formal syllabus this term, and there will be no grading. There is only one rule - you must be respectful. If you find a food distasteful, you needn't eat it. But you will refrain from calling it disgusting, or showing disrespect to those serving it to you. So long as you adhere to that rule, you will pass. If there are any requirements for individual trips, I will let you know prior to that day by e-mail. We won't be going anywhere this week, so please enjoy what I've made." He gestured at the food.

"Also - I have no assistant as of yet. If you would be interested, please let me know." He waved at the first girl to begin.

He was serving them tea! Right there in the middle of class! Lottie piled a plate nice and high with at least one of each sandwich, then made a show of examining the teas on offer before selecting the one she thought looked fanciest.

Hannibal might be well old, but he'd just shot right to the top of her list of favorite teachers ever. Sorry Mr. Beckwith.

Excuse you, Lottie, Hannibal was not old! ...Middle-aged, maybe.

"Do you have a favorite tea?" he asked.

Please. Lottie was 14. Hannibal was lucky she wasn't calling him "Grumpaw".

"I like . . . English breakfast," Lottie said. "But I s'peck that's mostly because that's what Mum keeps around the house."

"Comfort food." Hannibal nodded. "Foods we're raised around can be our favorites for years."

Hannibal would have Strong Words for anybody calling him "grumpaw". Or "grandpa", come to that. Unless Angela showed up with children.

Well, she wouldn't call him that to his face. . . .

"Also I haven't tried that many," Lottie admitted. "There were fancy Parisian teas when we went to Euro-Mouse when I was seven, but I was too dumb to think of tryin them at the time."

Being seven and all.

"It's never too late to try," Hannibal said. "I imagine if we don't try any this term, you can find most anything on the internet."

"That's why I signed up for this class!" Lottie said. "Well, I thought it was gonna be all Frenchy foods. But I am not disappointed."

"There may be some French foods," Hannibal said. "I'm rather fond of them, having spent some years in France. But I'm pleased you won't be disappointed with other things."
