Fandom High Graduation Ceremony, Class of 2015, Early Saturday Evening [Part 1]

Right after sunset, to make sure all types of guests could safely attend, the ceremony for graduation was ready to go. The lawn of the school had been lit up with blue and gold lights, creating safe paths for everyone to get to the seating area. There were blue and gold streamers flapping peacefully in the breeze, and of course, the makeshift paths were covered in glitter.

Look, if the supply wasn't going down, Zoe was just going to embrace the glitter madness for the sake of her own personal sanity.

Congratulations, Class of 2015! You made it to graduation day! Now you just had to get through the ceremony. At least nothing looked oddly out of place this year?

Kathy returned the pleasantries with much more sincerity than she had when talking to Flick's father. These people were important to him and obviously cared enough to come out and support him today.

"The pleasure is mine," she said. "Flick has been a great roommate and friend to me these past few years. My little sister is devastated to hear he's graduating and won't be around next year when she comes to visit."

Kathy would miss him, too.

"He's met your family?" Beth asked curiously. She'd met a scant few of Flick's friends so it was good to hear that didn't go both ways. "And he behaved?"

Well, she was a mother.

"Probably not," Joi said dryly. "He never does."

"He did, actually," Kathy said. "Sarah's thirteen and very...thirteen." She figured that Flick's mother would understand that, at least. "He just kind of took it in stride, and reminded her that I was a good big sister and cooler than she knew and to be appreciate me because you shouldn't take having a good sibling for granted."

And with what little she knew of Jude, Kathy figured he knew what he was talking about. She hesitated to say more, unwilling to ruin the day by mentioning Jude.

"He only met my sister," she said, sending the conversation to a slightly different track. "My parents wouldn't have been okay with my roommate being a guy, even one as gentlemanly as Flick."

"Gentlemanly?" Joi repeated, snickering but only in amusement. "I want him to use some of that gentlemanly behavior with me. Big buffoon."

Beth laughed quietly, glancing briefly at Joi before looking back at Kathy. "I'm fine with Jon rooming with a girl but he's an adult now so I can't really control him anyway. I'm glad he behaved. And that you got along."

"And that he didn't act like a slob I know he can be," Joi said fondly. "Guess he's saving that for his post graduation plans."

"He was," Kathy said staunchly. Then conceded, "Possibly because I was the most timid mouse when I got here and he was worried that one wrong word would send me scurrying for home." Which--fair. "But he taught me the basics of self-defense and a few other useful skills--" like lock-picking, not that she was going to mention that to his mom "--and was just overall a good guy. Best roommate I could have asked for."

"Good," Beth said, nodding and sounding pleased. "So, you're not graduating, then? How far away from that are you?"

"Next year," Kathy said proudly. "I'm going to have to poke Flick and make sure he knows he's got to come back and cheer for me, too. If he thinks he gets to wander off after grad and lose touch, he's out of his mind."

"From what he's told me, that's not going to happen," Joi assured her. "I think he's staying in New York. His mom's still living there."

Beth nodded.

"And can you imagine him on some beach in like Cancun?"

"Yes, but not enjoying the warmth or the waves." Probably doing his best to be the reason that fools and their money were soon parted. "There would be a lot of judging, I think. And rolling his eyes."

"Is that a hobby of his?" Beth asked. She'd been far removed from Flick's life for awhile. She was still getting used to being back into it. "He shouldn't be doing that."

"He keeps it to himself," Joi assured her. "He's analytically minded."

And judgmental.

"And only when people have it coming," Kathy assured her.

Which, you know, could mean anything.

"He's never turned on that on you, has he?" Beth asked, concerned now.

"He hasn't done it to me so I doubt he does it to any of his friends if he wants to keep his nose from being broken," Joi joked.

"Never," Kathy assured her. "He's always been really encouraging towards me. I barely knew my school-assigned big brother, but Flick kinda stepped into that role for me. He just--he always had my back, you know?"

Beth smiled widely.

"I'm glad to hear he's been all right," she said sincerely. "I didn't know he was...here -- " Or alive. " --- for a long time. It's good to hear that he was making his life better in that time. And that he had someone so kind to help him along."

"Oh, I don't know how much I helped him anyway," Kathy said, blushing a little. "But I'm glad to have been his friend. Thank you for raising such a good son."

She knew it wasn't as simple as that, that there was a lot more to the story than she knew, so she added, "No matter what else happened in his life, you laid the foundation to make him the person he is. And that's a fundamentally good one. I promise."

"You're gonna make one of us cry," Joi said, shaking her head and laughing. All a front to make sure she didn't cry.

"Thank you," Beth said, not seeming like she was going to cry. But, she did seem proud and pleased and a little more comfortable than she had been. "I appreciate you saying that."

"You're welcome," Kathy said, giving them a bright smile. "It's really been a pleasure meeting you both."

"You too," Beth said, smiling. "I'll make sure to let Jon know that he has to come back to see you graduate. I'll let him know it's an order."

"And I'll do the same," Joi promised. "Good to meet you too."
