"Welcome to your final class of the semester. As mentioned last week, we're going to Gotham City from my time," Bruce said. "When you compare your experiences there to what you saw of present day Gotham at the stat of the semester, remember that this is a fifty year change. In many ways, five decades is almost an infinite amount of time. The world can and does change many times over and your major world cities will reflect that."

"But on the other hand, you'll likely see a fifty year change in your lifetime. You know many people who've been alive longer than that. The world moves quickly, but it's still the world you've lived with to some degree, so in some ways things might not be as different as you think."

"Let's step through the portal. No costume changes this time. Some of you might appreciate having real collars and pockets."

And when they stepped through the portal, it was into a world that still felt like Gotham City... but it was more ~~meta for~~ Akira than Art Deco.

"Watch out for flying cars and Jokerz."

In which Bruce talks about relative time. So much changes while staying exactly the same.

Case in point, behold Wayne-Powers, the multi-national megacorp that was born from mergers years ago. Bruce finally had control of it again after years where he didn't. Thanks, clearly evil businessmen! Have fun in jail!

Much like last time, Bruce was willing to bring people to the roof to get a good view of Gotham as it stood now. Gotham Harbor was to the east. The boats were fancier now, but the place was largely unchanged. Skyscrapers rising up all around, now with dramatic curves and pointy edges. Police hovercraft in the sky. The occasional scream of someone being mugged followed by laughter. In many ways, Gotham was a brighter place than it once was.

Kathy was gazing down at the city when she heard the scream. And this wasn't a sim, this was a real place and a real person getting attacked.

Which meant there wasn't really a question about what she was going to do next, was there? She didn't have her uniform, but her identity didn't matter here. Pausing just long enough to braid her hair tightly and coil it around her head, Kathy jumped off of the building.

The dramatic curves and pointy edges actually made for great handholds and bounce-off points. Score one for future architecture!

She wasn't going to get out of this unscathed, but even bruised and bleeding, Kathy would consider this the best final of the week, apart from stealing an airship.

The park was almost exactly the same as it was 50 years ago. Okay, there was expressive if confusing modern art (future modern?) And there were fewer muggers hiding! Although, naturally, the muggers who were hiding were worse and dressed as clowns. So..

The zoo was still free to enter.

If you want to take some time to help people out, the Wayne Foundation still existed and it was still trying to help people get by day by day. The shelter was in an older section of the city that was largely abandoned. Buildings were boarded up and the streets were empty. If you explored the area carefully, you might get wind of illegal activity going on here or there. If you explored the area without care, you were likely to get mugged, kidnapped, experimented on, or worse.

Probably best to stick to the shelter.

The danger was less omnipresent, but it was weirder. Watch out for Jokerz - clown biker gangs (http://dcanimated.wikia.com/wiki/Jokerz). They might look and act silly, but if you laugh, they'll bill you. And if you don't pay... Well, you'll want to pay.

But if you can avoid them, the other gangs tend to be a little quiter during the day, so you could actually enjoy the sights of the city.

Here's the thing about Gotham City in the future: the teens danced. ALL. THE. TIME.

He'll be back here in a few days. But if you want to catch him before he says his final goodbye to Fandom, now's a good time.

The clubbing scenes in Batman Beyond are maybe the peak of all culture. And in that gif, the guy left of center? From the waist up, that's the closest anyone's ever come to documenting my dance skillz. Move my arms vaguely because that's what you do, right, and look pained.
