Kitty loved this weekend, and was clinging to any time she could get with Lexi before she had to send her back through the portal. But it also meant she had to readjust class a bit for the weekend. Therefore, the class met in the Danger Room, which was set up like a playground, with great spring weather.

"Hey, everyone," Kitty greeted them. "For those of you who might've brought kids, my name's Kitty, and I'm teaching your parents how to be responsible, so... possibly you're welcome. And for those who haven't met her before, the munchkin here-"

Lexi frowned in protest.

"-is Lexi. So, this weekend happened to drop on us just about the most adult thing you can do, which is caring for someone else. And there are different challenges to dealing with kids no matter what their age, which I'm sure you've either experienced or heard about by now. Today I'm going to throw you right in, and say that any teenagers in this class have five minutes to plan at least one activity for the younger kids to do, try to get them to do it, and keep an eye on them for the rest of the class period. Easy, right?"

"Well, then forgive me for not knowing you, Lexi," Irene replied, her smile widening a little. She glanced up to Kitty. "I suppose I know her dad already, then?"

Sometimes the parentage was a little mysterious with these kids. Sometimes not so much.

"It's okay," Lexi said. "Alternate universes happen all the time."

"Oh, she is definitely Clint's girl," Kitty said, smiling. "Yours?"

"Sherlock's," Irene said, rolling her eyes hopefully quickly enough that neither of the kids would notice. "My goodness, Lexi, you're an old pro at this. D'you live here in Fandom with your parents, normally?"

"We're from London," Hamish added helpfully, growing bold enough to let go of Irene's hand. "That's far away in England. You'd have to get on a plane for about eight hours to get there."

Hamish clearly hailed from a reality where portals weren't the norm, but air travel was.

"Nope. We live in New York. Not in the mansion, though. We have our own house, 'cause it gets attacked a lot, and we have all the dogs," Lexi answered. "I've been to London! Everyone talks cool there."

"We just talk normal," Hamish assured her. "Americans talk cool. You have dogs?"

The shortest point from shyness to instant friendship was to mention your multiple dogs, apparently.

"Dad's a big dog person," Lexi said seriously. "When we're in Dad's New York and we bring them all it gets really crowded. But fluffy."

"They're friendly dogs, right?" Hamish checked.

For science. Not because he was at all afraid of anything ever, especially dogs that were maybe loud or not very nice.

"They're really friendly. All they want is pets, and maybe pizza," Lexi shared.

"Dogs don't eat pizza!" Hamish exclaimed, giggling. "At least, I don't think so."

He looked up to Irene for confirmation, and she just shrugged. "I dunno, luv, it sounds like Lexi's dogs might be okay with pizza. But just Lexi's. We must always ask pets' owners whether it's all right to feed them, in case they have special diets."

Because she wouldn't put it past him to somehow find a pizza and a dog and conduct an experiment.

"Yeah, don't feed pizza to dogs, some of the ingredients aren't good for them," Kitty said. "And then there's Lucky, who's just fine with it, because he's Superdog."

"Lucky lives up to his name," Irene replied with a slight smile. "Hamish, we don't have any pets, do we?"

"Dogs chew on shoes and cats get fur on everything," Hamish responded, picking a bit of lint off of one of his sleeves delicately. "Even if they're fun to pet."

"Definitely my kid," Irene murmured to Kitty, wincing.

"They're not just fun to pet, they're also funny to watch," Lexi protested. "And they're really loyal, and will cuddle with you when you had a bad day or aren't feeling good. Sometimes they get in the garbage, though. I don't know what's up with that." She shrugged.

"There's something in the garbage that they want," Hamish suggested logically. "Maybe it smells good to them or it makes a funny noise when they play in it. We should look it up!"

"You are not getting my phone again," Irene said immediately, even as Hamish turned to ask her for it.

"Problems with the phone?" Kitty asked.

"I'm not wholly convinced I'll get it back," Irene explained crisply.

"I have my own at home," Hamish argued. "It's just like yours, Mum, I told you."

Again: seven years old. Again: Irene should not be parenting anyone.

"I have my own, too, but it's only for emergencies," Lexi shared. But she came from somewhere that she probably had to use it for just that now and then.

"I feel like that might be the case here as well," Irene said, eyeing her all-too-innocent-looking child. "How old are you, Lexi?"

"I'm seven," Hamish shared helpfully. "And three-quarters."

Because of course he already had a grasp on fractions.

"Eight," Lexi said proudly, and added, "I should start phasing any day now!"

Kitty was just going to facepalm and completely dread that possibility.

"Are you sure?" Irene asked, eyes widening. "I didn't know that was a guarantee. Mightn't you take after your dad?"

For Kitty's sake, seriously.

"Nope. There's a test for the gene and I've got it. Counting down the days!" Lexi said. Even though she didn't know how many days she was counting down to.

"There's no guarantee you're going to end up phasing, though, sweetie," Kitty reminded her.

"What's phasing?" Hamish asked, clearly feeling left out. "Does it hurt?"

"Phasing means you can do things like walk through walls," Kitty explained. "It doesn't hurt, but it makes carrying groceries in a lot easier."

Hamish thought about this for a moment, then asked, "Can all Americans do it?"

It clearly wasn't something all girls could do, or Mum would be able to. And other than that, he couldn't see how they were different from him, so. His logic was pretty sound.

Kitty smiled. "Nope. You have to have something specific in your DNA to be able to do that kind of thing. I know some Brits who have it, too."
