Creative Problem Solving, Tuesday, period 3

Class today met in a completely padded room. Not, like, a mental ward padded room, just a big gymnasium type room with mats glued to the walls and floors (and ceiling). Scattered all over were pillows of varying sizes, from little goofy throw pillows to giant feather mattresses. They came in all sorts of shapes as well as sizes, from simple squares to fluffy hippos.

Eliot stood in the midst of the whole thing with a bear shaped pillow in a casual choke hold. "I, uh. Wanted to apologize for not bein' in class, last week," he said. "And -- bein' kind of an ass before that."

Parker was standing next to him, hugging one of those purple hippos pillows. “And he means it.” She gave a vehement nod. “Anyway. He’s still getting better, and so are some of you, and we didn’t really have a lot of time to come up with a class. So, pillows!”

"Beat 'em up," Eliot said. "Scream into 'em. Take a nap. We can program some with Gaunt's face on them if you wanted to punch him in the face and didn't get the chance." Eliot may have done some of that before class, yes. Only it wasn't a pillow with his face on it. "Have a damn pillow fight, go nuts."

Parker’s eyes lit up. “Pillow fort!!.. oh, and today is Taco Tuesday. I guess.”

Start dibsing pillows.

Build a fort with Parker, take a nap, have a fight, get out your annoyance with Leland Gaunt.

Kaylin was more than happy to explore the building of this pillow fort thing and thought she'd have to teach it to the children at the Foundling Hall. After that she'd be happy to sleep.

Another nap sounded lovely, but Kathy was getting tired of sleeping all the time. So she shoved a bunch of pillows out of the way and started doing yoga instead. Relaxing, which was good, but also strengthening, which was better. You'd be amazing how much muscle mass and tone you could lose over a week of not eating, especially when your metabolism was ramped up to account for your super-speed and agility.

Really. There’s a lot of them. That’s not what they started out as.

They’re a lot less stressed than they were.

Eliot was definitely less stressed. Even if he did look like he was attempting to slowly squeeze the head off that teddy bear.

"I was worried about you." Kaylin said bluntly. Social skills? Hi, how are you? Nah.

Eliot nodded. "Parker told me. I'm sorry."

"I'm glad they rescued you from the Mothership."

Radio? She still hasn't discovered that and since she'd been back in Elantra most of last week, just returning this morning, she was a little behind the times.

"I would have missed you if you hadn't returned."

Yeah, they were going to have to work on her situational awareness, weren't they.

"I wasn't on any mothership," Eliot told her. "There was a whole thing with cursed objects. Parker took me out to make sure I didn't hurt anybody."

"Oh." Kaylin considered this for a moment. "I suppose you could have done a great deal of damage if you were cursed."

She tilted her head to one side to watch him carefully. "You're not mad at her." It was more a statement than a question.

Eliot shook his head. "Why should I be?"

Hey, she was still figuring out all this non-fief interaction stuff.

"You probably were at first. When you were all cursed and stuff..." Yes, that sounded right. "I would have been. But then, well, if Teela had done that to me I'd have known she had a good reason and when I was all myself again I'd understand."

She nodded. "So, I think that's what you did."

"I wish... I wish I'd had someone to stop me from doing some of the bad things I did. It's good you have Parker for a friend."

"I'm lucky to have her." Eliot smiled a little. "Sounds like you've got a friend like that now. Teela?"

Kaylin grinned. "She'd probably hit me if I called her that in public. Barrani are above befriending urchins from the fief. But she calls me kitling and she and Tain drag me along to bars with them and stuff."

"The thing is," she said seriously. "I don't know that she'd always stop me. She doesn't see anything wrong with... with the really bad thing I did. Says it just saved everyone the bother of a trial. I wish she would, though."

Ah. Interesting.

"Morality is . . . complicated," Eliot said. "People use words like bad and good real easily, like the line between 'em never changes. Like something can't be both. You trust this Teela?"

Kaylin looked shocked. "Of course not. She's Barrani."

Then she hedged a little. "Well, for most things - a lot of things, yes - but Teela would be the first one to tell me it was stupid to trust her completely. Barrani, well, immortals are hard to understand to begin with and the Barrani are bored easily and no one's better at intrigue and that stuff and when you're nearly impossible to kill you take a lot of risks, so..."

She sighed and gave in. "Yes, probably, even though it's dumb."

"O -- kay," Eliot said, really not sure how he was supposed to respond to that info dump. Oddly enough, immortals hadn't ever really been on his radar, before. "She ever try to push you into doin' something you're not comfortable with?"

"Clearly you've never had a Barrani decide you need to do something," Kaylin said drily. "Or gotten caught up in one of their bar brawls. So yes, but probably not anything really bad."

Oh, the things she would one day get dragged into because of Teela!

"Yeah, kid, I've never even heard of them before." But he did know from powerful people taking advantage of your moral flexibility. He'd been dealing with that most of his adult life. "Just -- look --" Seriously, immortals? "If you -- you get yourself into a situation -- just -- you can call me, okay? Things get hairy and you don't have Teela or someone else to fall back on."

Even if it meant he ended up making an enemy of a freaking otherworldly immortal.

"Really?" Kaylin's eyes widened. "You'd do that for me?"

Eliot... Now Eliot just might stand a decent chance of taking out a Barrani. Especially if they were having a bad day.

Eliot could likely at least hold them off while Kaylin got away, anyway.

"'Course. Wouldn't offer if I wouldn't."

Kaylin, sadly, was not big on running away. Unless it was in the middle of a bar brawl when it was clear the Hawks were on the way. Bad form to make them arrest other Hawks, you know?

"Thank you," she said sincerely. "And if You ever need anything I would be glad to help."

"I'll keep that in mind."

He wasn't likely to take her up on it, though.

At least he didn't laugh. Most of the people back home would have at least snickered to themselves.

"Okay, then."

Parker was hanging onto that purple hippo. HERS.

Also building a pillow fort, complete with a canopy. You are welcome to come inside. It's fairly roomy.
