Adulting 101- Monday- 4th period

Well. The time had finally come. Kitty had to bring the class back to the Danger Shop, which today looked like an auto mechanic's shop, with a car for each of them.

"I hear last week was terrible," Kitty said, "so I'm not going to make you do anything that requires too much thought. But I am going to teach you how to change a tire. Maybe you drive, maybe you don't, but at some point either your car's going to break down, or you're going to see a stranded motorist on the road, or your friend's going to call you because they're stuck with a flat tire, so just in case, you should know how to do it. Come on over here and watch."

Kitty then showed them the steps on what to do, then brushed herself off and said, "That's what you're going to do. There are coveralls if you want to protect your clothes, and there are jacks and spares in the trunk."

Which probably shouldn't take you the whole class period, but eh, you can chill when you're done.

While Flick wasn't really one to drive, this he did know how to do so he went about it quickly and got it done efficiently.

The process seemed relatively straight forward. Raven went up to her car, got it jacked up all nice and proper, and started removing the old tire.

Except -- she couldn't quite -- okay, those lugnuts were on very tight. She couldn't get the second one to even budge. She leaned into the tire iron, even shifted to give herself some large muscles and a bit more weight, and it wouldn't move. She tried standing on the thing -- and the lugnut snapped off entirely.

"Um."

That probably wasn't good.

Who's actually never had to change a tire before but she's not gonna tell you that.

Look who didn't forget/almost forget this week!

Raven's issue changing a tire has totally happened to me. Only on the left shoulder of a high way at 11 PM next to a huge merge area, and it was highway patrol who broke off the lugnut.

Worst part was, there was a Sears Auto Center RIGHT THERE -- across six lanes of speeding, merging traffic. Good times.

Ugh. *pats*

AAA broke off one of my lugnuts on my old car. When I got the tire replaced I was told it was fine as long as it was just one lugnut that was missing. Aaaand then about four months later that same tire blew and AAA broke off another lugnut.

Yeah, I went without my broken lugnut for at least the rest of that summer. Then when I finally decided to get it fixed (before a 1K+ drive), the folks at the car place were like "we don't have one" *shrug* and I had to walk two miles to an auto supply store and buy the (like, $1.50) replacement for them.

I was literally spending hundreds of dollars on new tires at the same time, but NOPE, CAN'T GET THAT LUGNUT FOR YOU.

Ugh. I've had them "lock" the nuts in place. I do not live somewhere where people steal hubcaps. or tires! Try to change one of those suckers when there's some kind of key-tool you need to get them off and no one told you!

TOM: The inside of your locking nut is stripped. We see this all the time. Once the inside of a locking wheel nut is stripped, you have to resort to extraordinary measures to remove it.

RAY: These may include jumping up and down on the car, cursing at it and, in rare instances, setting it on fire and shrugging when the customer comes to pick up the charred wreckage.

Oh man, locking lugnuts I have not faced. This was just an old POS that the last mechanic had tightened the nuts on with a power drill. I'm pretty sure it didn't HAVE any hubcabs any more. (Certainly not on that tire, which blew if you looked at it funny. And ALWAYS on the rim. NEVER just a patch job.)

It's never just a patch job. I am very grateful Big O tires will replace any tire while it's on the road, and that my dad noticed mine were a little low last time I visited.

From what I was reading they put these in place when people started getting fancy-schmancy $800-$1000 tires, but seriously? SERIOUSLY? They can have my damn hubcaps if they want them that badly.

Why would you do that? WHY WOULD YOU POWER DRILL A LUGNUT ON when people might someday want to get them off by the side of the road?! UGH.

Because it was Florida, probably. They operate on a whole different version of logic. (Earlier in this same year I had had to drive from one end of the city to the other in search of a replacement rim for this same POS. Where they tried to sell me $1,000 rims. Yeah no.)
