A sign on the door says: *Shop Class Cancelled. Go back to bed.*

The computer components that were HAL have been disconnected and placed in the corner.

Mac sits at his desk, a pair of crutches leaning on the wall and a cast on his leg. His mood is somewhere between grumpy and guilty.

Sam opened the door and poked her head in. "Hey. Got a minute?"

"And what on earth are you making?"

Sam grinned. "You can duct tape chopsticks together if you need something sturdier."

"Yeah, I think we probably do," she admitted, taking a seat. "HAL told me that she was responsible for the reprogramming."

"No," Sam replied quietly. "She's not."

She watched his fingers, happy not to have to meet his eyes. "She's a megalomaniacal robot out to destroy humanity."

"Because..." Sam linked her fingers and stared down at them. She'd have to lie to him. Again. And she couldn't do it if she was looking him in the eye. Not just because he looked so much like O'Neill--she respected Mac a lot. "Because she was designed to look and act like Samantha Carter, PhD. Who is actually my aunt, by the way. And very seldom megalomaniacal."

"Honestly? I never dreamed she'd be this petty," Sam replied. "She usually thinks in terms of...conquering galaxies," she swallowed, "not in terms of two or three people. She was probably going after me, anyway."

Sam blinked back tears. "I couldn't tell you the truth, Mac. I still can't. It's not safe for you to know."

"If she comes back," Sam said, solemnly, "she'll probably try for me again. If you want me not to come back to class so I don't endanger everyone else, I understand."

She blushed, slightly. "You look almost exactly like Jack O'Neill's...father. She knows him and there's, well, there's history."

Sam met his look but wasn't sure exactly what to say. She could fix this so easily...and he'd never look at her the same again.

But the truth was, she'd known who he was at the dance. She'd only gotten confused afterwards, when she was asleep.

"Yes, that's probably best," Sam nodded. She hoped he was still talking about Eighth. "If you need me to design some safety protocols, I can, but I'm not sure they'll keep her out."

"I really like the way you think, Mac." Sam grinned back.

"It's a good one."
