"When we visited Chicago during the 1893 Colombian Exposition, it was to witness the rebirth and rebranding of a city that had seen mass destruction about twenty years earlier," Bruce said from just outside the portal. "For Tokyo, we're visiting something similar; the 1964 Summer Olympics. This was the true kickoff of Tokyo becoming a true world city again after the war, and it was framed in terms of peace and sport during the height of the Cold War. Feel free to tour on your own, or stick with the group."

The first Olympics hosted in Asia, the Games of the XVIII Olympiad (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1964_Summer_Olympics) were actually held in October due to summer being too summery.

So many sports. See the wiki link for locations and events. Bruce, for his part, intended to make his way to the Korakuen Ice Palace to check out Joe Frazier on his path to boxing gold.

This was huge. Hanna wasn't sure what she wanted to see first, honestly. She kept coming back to the track-and-field events, watching in awe.

This, *this* she could see as being a long-term goal.

Kathy was parked in front of the women's gymnastics competitions, face a study in wistfulness. She missed this, oddly enough. She hadn't much enjoyed competing back when she had been, but now that she couldn't anymore, it ached a bit.

Gwen went for track and field, for no particular reason other than a race sounded like it could be cool, and also because it didn't smell like chlorine. Well, no one was gonna believe her at home when she said she went to the Olympics over the week.

The 1964 ancient arts exhibition put on by the Tokyo National Museum to coincide with the Tokyo Olympics provided an opportunity to promote Japan's traditional culture to foreign visitors and to the Japanese people themselves, as part of an effort to regain normalized status in the international community.

Bruce would make some time to be here, too, when he wasn't watching people punch each other.
