Modern Day Myths, Wednesday

When it came to things like tricks or jokes, Thor usually left that sort of thing to his brother. However, when researching ideas for this week's class, this particular topic had come up... and he just couldn't resist using it. Just be glad he hadn't gone with any of the more, er, graphic urban legends out there involving sex.

"As I understand it, your education system- outside of places like Fandom- often leaves much to be desired when it comes to sexuality," he began without preamble. "As it's often not discussed openly in polite company, this leaves the topic open for all manner of tales to be whispered about. Today, we're going to discuss the legend of the woman who got pregnant after being shot by a bullet. Circulated and printed in many forms over the years, this particular tale is over 200 years old, having originated in an article written in jest. Unfortunately, many people did not pick up on the clearly jovial tone of the piece, and took it seriously, passing it on to others as a warning in good faith. Why do you think so many readers believed the article, even with the explanation in a subsequent issue that it was written in jest?"

Anna considered it, then bit her lip. "Fear," she guessed. "You could -- have something bad happen to you, like getting shot? And then end up, um, with ... child. And if you're an unmarried young lady, nobody will believe that's why. They'll think you've been ... behaving improperly. So it's taking one bad thing and adding another, and now you've got all this public shame to contend with."

Anna had missed many of the societal shifts in the past century or two that meant that unwed mothers were no longer pariahs. But maybe that was why the tale had gone out of fashion.
