Defending Yourself Against Magic | Tuesday, 4th period

This week, the students would find themselves stepping into a simulated night-time street straight out of a mystery film. Bright street lights and neon, with intervening pools of darkness. Empty cars parked along the streets, stores boarded up for the evening. Occasional pedestrians or cars passed by.

"Since it's come to my attention that everyone's likely to be a bit antsy today and maybe need a distraction, I thought we'd put a few things into practice."

Bob beamed in a way that meant you should probably all worry.

A man hurried down the street toward them, looking back over his shoulder occasionally, his whole attitude screaming fear and paranoia.

Then, about a block away, the street erupted. A writhing mass of darkness that seemed alive poured out, taking myriad different shapes, a man at its center.

Bob pointed at the squirrely man. "You have to protect him," he pointed at the man in the middle of the dark army, "from him. Have fun!"

Look at Isabelle actually being present both physically (unlike last week) as well mentally (unlike the weeks before that – although the pollen came with its own level of distraction, obviously).

She grinned pretty widely as soon as she saw they'd be fighting something.

Nathan was a little too unfocused to really concentrate on the lesson. This island was going to make him crazy.

Anders wasn't in a mood to help Nathan's concentration, unfortunately. He leaned in close as soon as Bob was done talking and whispered, "How soon can I see you?"

Fighting darklings was all well and good, but it wasn't quite what he needed.

Nathan looked momentarily dazed because there was closeness happening but shook it away quickly enough.

"This is my only class for the day," he answered. "I'm done after this."

Good answer. Excellent answer. Anders' favorite answer in the history of answers, in fact.

"I'm done after this too," he said, still quiet. "I'll be in my room."

He'd get Rapunzel to take Pascal and Lachlan ...somewhere. He didn't really care where, as long as it was a place that didn't also include his bed.

Nathan didn't really trust his voice so he just nodded. Didn't want to draw too much attention to the conversation in the middle of class.

Anders didn't particularly want to either, so he simply smiled and stepped away. There'd be plenty of time to talk later.

Nope. Nope. Nope nope nope. Noooo. No way. Nu-uh. Nope. Elsa was not doing this today.

Where 'this' meant 'get terrorized by rude little monsters,' with an extra dose of 'make sound life choices.'

So when the first darkling got it's little claws into the hem of her dress, she punted that thing a good twenty feet back where it had come from. And when the second one so much as wandered close, she had one glove pulled off and in hand and the little beast was blinking in confusion from inside a chunk of ice before she could even register that 'conceal,' 'don't feel,' and 'don't let them know' had all gone flying swiftly out the window.

She hated this week a lot.

Anders didn't get much of a chance to witness the darklings' senses of humor, what with how quickly any darkling that came within 15 feet of him was lit on fire.

Fireballs made for an excellent way to occupy all of his energies -- or close enough to get through the hour.

It was probably in bad form for the TA to be so tempted to find a way to kill their already-dead teacher, wasn't it? Not that she would, or even suspected she could, but all the same...

Ahem. Elsa was here, and... frazzled. Perhaps frazzled was the word.
