Independent Study - Thursday, Period 3

Jones sent her students a reminder via email to join her at Portalocity for class today. She arrived early and waited in the cold weather without a jacket or coat other than the suit she was wearing.

"Today there is an event in my dimension involving some of my former students," she began. "As Cassandra's topic involves the study of magic, I thought it would be beneficial to her to see another type of magical environment. As the semester progresses we will be taking field trips that will involve Eleanor and Sparkle's topics."

"Before we enter the wood, I will caution you not to leave the clearing we are entering. There are dangers in the forest and I cannot protect you if you choose to wander away. Additionally I would be cautious around the beings known as Coyote and Ysengrin. One is a god and the other is losing whatever slight grip he has on his sanity."

And with those welcome words of happiness and light, Jones stepped through the portal expecting her students to follow her.

A lecture filled with frivolity and happiness! Only not.

Jones and company arrive in a clearing filled with magical creatures galore. Fairies, elves, weird little creatures that defy description. A flying octopus. They all sit in in the clearing quietly as two teenagers approach. One is a boy wearing a green blazer and tie. The other is a young woman wearing armor but bearing no weapons.

At the other end of the clearing a teenaged girl with red hair steps across a small gully and greets them. She identifies the boy as Andrew and the girl as Parley. She announces the boy to be the new medium from Gunnerkrigg court. She then introduces herself as Antimony and the new medium for the forest.

Jones turns to the her current student and nods at the event going on. "This is a formal ceremony. One that has not been performed for many years. Not since Antimony's mother was given the title of medium for the court. The medium is a kind of diplomat between the forest which is magical in nature and the Court which is more technology driven. Over the years there has been a friction between these factions and the mediums have served a crucial role in keeping the peace. These students have been trained to handle some of the more sensitive issues between the forest and the court with absolute clarity and diplomacy."

Just then the girl known as Antimony appeared to combust in a swirl of flame much to the delight of the forest creatures.

Jones would have sighed if she had known it would be an appropriate response. "Antimony seems to have a flare for the dramatic," she continued. "Please note the two animals behind her."

One of the animals she gestured to appeared to be a dog-like creature with a black colored body but with Native American coloring and designs on his body. The other one appeared to be a creature made of tree limbs but with a wolf's head. "The one with the wooden body is Ysengrin. He is the general of the court and a formidable warrior. Do not antagonize him. His temper is short and his sanity is questionable. The other is Coyote."

She paused a moment trying to figure out the best way to describe Coyote.

"He is a trickster. And a god. Tread lightly with him. He may seem amusing but he is perhaps even more dangerous than any of the creatures here in the forest."

Which seemed surprising since Coyote was now frolicking around the clearing chanting "Party! Party! Party!"

Jones shrugged. "Please feel free to join in with the festivities and ask questions. I shall observe and interrupt if you endanger yourself. Do not leave the clearing. There are other creatures out there who are not very hospitable to humans."

Who is no longer on fire and is standing at the head of the clearing and looking rather cheerful.

Cassandra's eyebrows had crawled rather far up her face. "Was that truly necessary?" The fire bit, that was.

"The entities in the forest are all non-human," Antimony said raising her eyebrows at the girl. "The fact that I was chosen as a Medium to represent the forest can be challenging. Since I am also part fire elemental I felt it was important to show that I am one of them. May I ask who you are? Are you a part of Jones' new school?"

"I am," Cassandra agreed, narrowing her eyes. "You are part demon?"

Oh, sure, have that be your take-away.

Antimony's eyes narrowed and her smile quickly disappeared. "No," she said with some uncertainty in her voice. "My ancestor was from etheric descent. More like a fairie than a demon."

"A spirit," Cassandra surmised. Her frown deepened. Did this one claim to be descended from abominations? "And you serve as a... medium... to the spirits here."

"Yes!" Annie said looking excited again. "It's a very important position to represent the forest at the court. It helps keep disagreements in check and from escalating to something worse."

"And what are these... disagreements?" Cassandra asked. "Attempted possession?"

"Those flames were beautiful," Eleanor said. Others might have started with 'hello' or 'pleased to meet you.'

"Thank you!" Annie said cheerfully. "I've been working on my abilities all summer. It felt nice to show them off. I'm Antimony Carver. Are you one of Jones' new students?"

Who are hanging close together and speaking to each other in whispers.

Who is still prancing around and shouting "Party!" much to the joy of the forest onlookers.

"Are we having a party, then?" Eleanor asked.

Sure, Jones had warned them. But she was fascinated by danger. She couldn't resist the opportunity to ask.

"Well Hello young one!" Coyote said gleefully as his body began to stretch much longer than it should. It curved slightly to Eleanor. He took a tentative sniff at Eleanor. "You're not from the court!" he exclaimed. "You smell different. Delightful! You must be one of the new brood the Wandering Eye is teaching. We were so sad to see her go. She is just loads of fun!"

Coyote then began to laugh heartily. Clearly he knows Jones well.

Who has the head of the wood but a body made of trees.

It's rather strange looking.

And he's scowling at everybody.

Who is there to help.
