Speech Comm

201--2nd period

Paradoxical Encomium

"Write me a speech in praise of something unworthy of praise. For example...toast sweat. Now you can't use that one. Questions? Ask."

301--3rd period

Reciprocity

"Ok, so...yesterday you heard the lecture and you all gave me papers that missed the mark. How do I return that favor, hmm?"

She stares at them for a long time with her arms folded.

"Presents are nice. So is public speaking and personal sharing. Everyone...give me a decent example of reciprocity. If your example is below the bar I have set in my mind and am not telling you about...I'll make you do it again."

Phoebe signs in and starts making notes about how to praise things that she wouldn't normally praise.

Cole plays footsie with Phoebe under their desks as he tries to think of a topic.

Bel scowled. "I'd rather praise the Source of All Evil."

If Phoebe didn't like CJ so much, and respect her, she might have done a *headdesk* or a total *facepalm*.

Thursday was going to be a new kind of hell, and for the first time, she was dreading CJ's class.

"That," Bel said carefully, "might get me in a lot of trouble around here." He thought for a moment. "I'll do mine praising bullies." He grinned.

Isabel signs in. And as much as it pains her, starts to list praise-worthy points about George W. Bush.

"It's a challenge. But I think if I stick the big points, 'Gee, he hasn't nuked anyone yet.' I might be okay." Isabel said as she carefully knelt on her seat, trying hard not to actually sit down.

Alanna starred at her paper and finally wound up with a short list of ideas. They included being woken up at two am by trumpets, teachers who assigned homework for falling off of your horse, broken/maimed arms/hands, and Duke Roger.

Maia signed in, her mouth hanging open at C.J. as she stood up to make her speech.

"Reciprocity is the mutual exchange of rights, privileges or obligations between nations or people in a relationship. For example in the student teacher relationship, C.J. gives us a grade in exchange for our work. Between nations, reciprocity occures in instances such as trade alliances such as NATO and through import and export." Maia turned to look at C.J. waiting to see if she would have to do it again.

Maia scowled at C.J. and mumbled something about 'so are your lectures' under her breath before starting again.

"Reciprocity is like the mob. The people pay for protection and the gangsters don't break their kneecaps."

Maia sat back down mumbling again 'of course if Shep gave a text book he would be perfect cos he's Shep. Maybe I should meet up with you when your 17 in a bar and then you'd love me like you love him.'

Re: 301

Maia tossed her pencil down and stood up "No C.J. supply and demand is what you and I are doing. I keep supplying answers and your demanding more so no, I don't believe I will give it another crack, both of my answers were fine and the first one was perfect." She decided she had nothing more to lose so she went ahead "And as for what more I have to say, I apologize for not coming to class friday I'm not Shep C.J. but I guess if I'd have met you in the bar that night my answer, even if it was textbook would have been just perfect."

Maia sat fuming at C.J., she sat glaring at her for the rest of the class seething underneath wanting to say a lot more then she would let herself. Trust her, I'll never trust her. What the hell kind of class is this, damn Shep kissing her ass. She doesn't like me, she never did, all that crap being nice after Chiana left. Whatever." Maia scowled down at her desk and then back up at C.J. See if I EVER talk in your stupid class again.

I kept you company on Sunday, so you told me the *right* things to write about?

"Reciprocity is the idea of give and take in equal amounts between two parties. So, like, if you have a significant other, maybe one of you does the dishes and the other one does the laundry. Or if someone's absent and I let them use my notes from the class they missed, then the next time I'm out, they take notes for me. Bigger picture things are things like, alliances between nations. Like in the US and England we might have a thing like 'Hey if Canada invades, we'll get your back. But, you know, if France comes over the channel we expect you to show.'

Shep may be pouting at the idea that *everyone* tanked on their essay. He's pretty sure he did exactly what he was told.

Boone slumped in his seat.

"Um, reciprocation is kind of like a business merger..." He offered, having spent most of yesterday afternoon cramming for his business mid-terms.
