Adulting 101- Monday- 4th period

While the class was meeting in the Danger Shop today, they were starting in the parking lot of an apartment complex. Also, it was 72 degrees and sunny here. Bless you, Danger Shop.

"Today we're talking about apartments," Kitty greeted them. "Because once you're not somewhere that'll put you up in dorms, it's time to find someplace to stay. Sometimes you might have it easy, like if you come from a situation where you can live with your family until you can save up enough money. If you don't have that, though, it gets a little... well, not harder, but you have to do more work. You can find a roommate, or rent a room in someone's house, or you can try to find a place on your own. It's all gonna depend on your situation and preferences and what you can afford. You can find any of these the same way you'd find a job, just on different websites. But today we're going to visit a couple apartments just so you can see what's out there. And you should have some idea of what you want and what you don't, too, before you see a place. Like if I was looking for an apartment, I'd want enough room to entertain, it'd need to accept both cats and dogs-" Shh, Lockheed was totally a cat if he had his image inducer on- "and a washer and dryer on the premises is a must. Laundromats are a bitch in the winter, I'm not trying to deal with that. So you want to have some sort of idea of what you're looking for, and be willing to bend on some things because unless you've got a lot of money you're not going to get everything.

"That said, before we go anywhere, I want to go around and have you guys tell me what you think a good price for a one-bedroom apartment is in this area, and a couple things you would definitely want or don't want to have in your home."

Okay, this part Raven could definitely get used to. She grabbed herself a soda and some cheetos and hopped up on one of the chairs along the bar, facing the view. Baltimore was rather pretty, at least from all the way up here.

"I would rather live up on this patio," Hanna said with a slight sigh, opening up her beverage. "Perhaps with a space heater and a tent.

Who knew you could get claustrophobia from modern living?

"It is rather nice," Raven said. "I'm not much one for tents, though."

She liked roofs.

"I think being able to see where I am would be my greatest priority," Hanna admitted. "A view like this. And if not that, something... cave-like."

Or a small box, big enough for a tiger or a Hanna!

"You could find one of those big old industrial lofts with all the windows," Raven suggested. "Then you could have the view and a nice roof when it snows."

"If it was unfurnished, it would cost less." And she could make do without all those 'amenities.' "I like that idea... would you live in one of these?"

"I'd like it better than these apartments," Raven said. "My brother and I live in a big mansion back home, it's basically a castle. I guess in my head nice places to live always look like castles."

The school and the dorms, for instance.

[identity profile] hexentotchen.livejournal.com 2015-01-27 03:20 am (UTC)(link)
"Even if they are very small?" Hanna asked, thinking about that. "There must be apartments that look like castles, somewhere in the city." She frowned. "Or do they not have that in most places in America?"

"The dorm rooms here aren't that big," Raven said. "But they're . . . they have style. They're not just empty boxes full of straight lines."

Well, they were on the inside, before students moved into them. Raven was maybe having a little bit of trouble filling out the empty spaces of these apartments.

"Are you going to live in Baltimore, do you think?" Hanna didn't have a good grip on local architecture, but possibly an older city would be closer to the kind of thing Raven liked. "Perhaps all I need is a closet or storage unit somewhere, if I get to travel like I want to."

"If you like tents, that'd probably work well enough." Raven shrugged. "I have no idea," she admitted. "I might go back home. I might stay around here. I might move to a place that has moon colonies."

Re: Patio

[identity profile] hexentotchen.livejournal.com 2015-01-27 03:52 am (UTC)(link)
That brought up something Hanna had not yet considered. "Do you mean, just-- leave our old universe behind?" Was that even allowed?

Re: Patio

[personal profile] tigerundercover 2015-01-27 03:56 am (UTC)(link)
"Sure. I mean, I'd probably go try and get my brother to come with me, first, but if you find one you like better, why not?"

Re: Patio

[identity profile] hexentotchen.livejournal.com 2015-01-27 03:58 am (UTC)(link)
"Why not," Hanna echoed, blinking. "I hadn't considered that, but..." There might be definite pluses to not going back to the world of her birth. There was no one there to miss her in any good way; if she found a better world.... "A moon colony would also hopefully have spectacular views."

"And maybe martians!" Raven refused to let go of her 50s space-age dreams. Refused.

Re: Patio

[identity profile] hexentotchen.livejournal.com 2015-01-27 04:07 am (UTC)(link)
Hanna giggled at that, then looked thoughtful, because Alanna was an alien, and other people were... other things, so... why not? "Or even further. Another galaxy, perhaps." Far, far away.

In a conversational U-turn that had nothing to do with anything, Hanna asked, "Did you still want some examples of self-defense movement?"

Re: Patio

[personal profile] tigerundercover 2015-01-27 04:09 am (UTC)(link)
Around here, Raven was starting to get used to those sorts of conversational leaps. "Yeah, definitely."

Re: Patio

[identity profile] hexentotchen.livejournal.com 2015-01-27 04:12 am (UTC)(link)
Hanna smiled, pleased. "I have no classes tomorrow. And I start every day with a run around the island." Literally. "But I like to use the back deck for practice in the afternoons. So, you can find me there whenever you are ready."

Re: Patio

[personal profile] tigerundercover 2015-01-27 04:13 am (UTC)(link)
"I don't have any classes, either. Every morning?"

Raven did some weight lifting, but she was way more casual about it than that.

[identity profile] hexentotchen.livejournal.com 2015-01-27 04:16 am (UTC)(link)
"It is important to have a routine," Hanna pointed out. "And I am used to intensive training," she admitted. "I don't wish to lose any physical conditioning just because there aren't very many threats here."

"There are flying eels," Raven said. "And sometimes we get invaded."

Re: Patio

[identity profile] hexentotchen.livejournal.com 2015-01-27 04:20 am (UTC)(link)
"Those were a challenge! ... but next time, we need to have a net ready," Hanna agreed. "And that is why I need to be prepared. To defend the dormitory if required in the future."

"All by yourself?"

Re: Patio

[identity profile] hexentotchen.livejournal.com 2015-01-27 04:33 am (UTC)(link)
"There were others as well." Hanna looked a little abashed. "Anders, Cassandra, Jalian... but my abilities rely on training as much as anything innate. I must always be ready."

Ready for what? She'd never questioned there would be something to be ready for. So far life hadn't proven her wrong.
