Creative Problem Solving, Tuesday, period 3

Today, Parker was in black again. And looking very perky, outside a Danger Shop- created door.

“Something a little different from last week. There will not be cake. Sadly.”

Eliot tried not to facepalm in front of the students. This was going to be a Thing all semester, wasn't it. "Last week you all proved you're completely nuts," he said. "Except for Amy." STAIRS WERE A VALID LIFESTYLE CHOICE. "This week, we're going to see how you do getting out of a situation when you can't just leap off the side of a building."

Parker opened the door to reveal… a large storage closet. Paint buckets, a bookcase piled with tools of varying usefulness, and one small lit light-bulb were evident-- as was an air-duct with a small grate across it, just above head-height.

“We have enough closets for everybody. Or you can team up, and be locked in together. Object: get out of here before whoever put you in here comes back!”

"That's a simulated 'whoever'," Eliot noted. "We don't mean us." They weren't the bad guys in the class scenario. This time. "Once you're out, head for the room at the end of this hall." Eliot pointed to another closed, presumably locked door. "Where there will be something that isn't cake." You're welcome, Parker. "If you choose to team up, every person on the team has to make it, or you all fail."

“So don’t mess this up!... or stay in there just ‘cause it’s fun. I’m looking at some of you. You know who you are.” Or not.

"Goin' with a known quantity's a good instinct," Eliot agreed. "What would you have done if someone was in the hallway when you opened the door?"

"Here? Avoided them if I could or tried to take them out. I wouldn't want to hurt anyone too badly," she explained. "Back home - anything I had to, including killing them if I needed to."

Wouldn't have been the first time she'd had to do that.

"I'd rather not have to do that, though."

Well, that peaked Eliot's interest. He straightened up a little, crossing his arms over his chest as he gave Kaylin a quick, assessing once over. "You done that before?"

She shrugged and made a little face. "I didn't exactly grow up in a nice place."

"But you survived." Clearly. "And learned how to handle yourself, from the sound of it. You keepin' in shape?"

"I did." Did some things she regretted, too, but she had survived.

Kaylin gestured toward the mostly healed bruise on her face. "I go back to Elantra whenever I can to train with the Hawks. Last time my sergeant said I wasn't a complete waste of space."

She had the feeling Eliot would understand the compliment in that.

"Here I run a lot and practice with my daggers and with the machine things in the gym - when I can figure them out. And I'm always on the lookout for anyone to spar with."

Judging by the small smile on Eliot's face, he knew exactly where the compliment was in that. He wasn't familiar with 'the Hawks', but it wasn't hard to recognize an elite squad when he heard about one. "Come find me sometime when you've got the time," Eliot offered. "I can probably show you a couple moves that'll at least make your sergeant raise an eyebrow."

Kaylin's eyes widened and a smile spread across her face. "Really? Oh, I'd like that!"

"Yeah." Eliot smiled. "We incomplete wastes of space gotta watch out for each other."

She beamed at him. "We do. Okay. I'll do that!"
