The Art of BS [Thursday, January 8, 2015]

Josh, dressed in a navy blue suit with a light blue tie, was up at the front of the room leaning casually against his desk. "Hello everyone, and welcome to the Art of BS, which as far as classes being taught this semester is probably the second most useful after how to adult correctly."

Because really, who needs ethics. Josh worked in politics.

"As it is the first day of class, introductions are standard, but I want to see what level of natural bullshitting ability I'm working with, so your job today is to introduce everyone else. All you'll have to work with is their name and what they're wearing. Make up a plausible backstory for as many of your fellow students as you'd like. I'll also be playing along, to show you how professional-grade BS looks. I'm Josh Lyman, and I've worked for two presidents as well as several members of Congress, so believe me when I tell you I can bullshit with the best of them."

He pointed at random. "You. Skippy. Give us your name, then find another student to introduce to us all."

Form a first impression of Josh!

Put down your name and what your character looks like in class today! For the introduction, have your character give someone's name, their grade (that you made up), and at least one other fun fact that you make up or actually know!

After class! He needs a TA if you're interested.

Kathy Li

Kathy looked around for someone to introduce.

Edward Kenway

Edward was wearing a hoodie and the blue scarf that Isabelle had given him, thrown on over the crappy, oft-fixed pants he'd brought with him from home when he came here all this time. His hair was tied back into its usual small blond ponytail, and he looked generally jovial.

He was looking around, too.

"Hey, everyone!" Josh said, grinning. "This is Kathy. She's a senior--", probably, "--she's into US history because history buffs are amazing and extremely date-able, ask anyone--and she is an Olympic-level gymnast."

Face had cleaned up after Atton's class and was now wearing a simple outfit from back home ~~ignore the stubble and fancy cannibal~~.

Travis Coates

"So, this is Garik and he's a junior," Travis started, giving Face a nod. "He's a foreign exchange student from Switzerland who's not used to the rapid swings in temperatures here so he makes sure to layer up in preparation! He probably likes to ski or snowboard since it's cold in Switzerland. Maybe he even likes cheese!"

"This guy's name is Edward and he's a freshman." Sorry for making you a tiny freshman, Edward. "He's really happy to be here. He's taking time off from...treasure hunting to take this class."

Travis wrote his name on the board. He was wearing jeans and a flannel shirt over a dark grey tee shirts. Layers and all since it was freaking freezing outside.

Edward grinned. "Aye, what he said," he said.

He could object to the tiny freshman part, but what was the point?

"This one's name is Travis," Edward said sagely. "He dresses like this to compensate for the fact he's from a thousand centuries into the future. He's a senior and he ain't lookin' forward to going back to getting shot at."

Face nodded.

"Oh, ja." Don't ask when and how he'd found out what a Swiss accent sounded like, this is what happened when you let teenage Lorrdians do linguistic self-study. "I miss the mountains, the snow, and the fondue."

Raven Darkholme

Raven was mimicking a nearly weather appropriate outfit, today. She'd remembered to look like she was wearing tights, but had kind of forgotten the whole "sleeves" thing.

Rapunzel

"This is Raven," Rapunzel told the class proudly, doing her very best not to smile. That was the point, right? To be convincing. "She's an ice nymph from the North Pole," because that's a thing, sure, "and that's why she can get away with going sleeveless while the rest of us are shivering."

She gave a solemn nod, and added, "And she's a senior, and after she graduates, she's going to go back up north to try to get a job with Santa. 'Cause that's what you do at the North Pole."

Rapunzel was wearing a wintry (https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/236x/93/22/70/932270ea704ca8ae281d297cef68f76c.jpg) version of her usual attire -- a purple dress, lace-up bodice, visible petticoat all in place as usual, but added a fur-lined cloak on top.

And she was wearing the pink sneakers that Barry had given her, too. Because it was cold you guys.

She fiddled with her hair -- all seventy feet of it were pooled at her be-sneakered feet -- as she wrote her name on the board in neat, looping cursive.

"This is Rapunzel," Raven said to the class. "She's an aerialist with a Shakespeare themed circus troupe back home, and uses her long hair as the ropes for her act. She's currently a . . . junior, though every semester she swears she's going to drop out and go home because if she misses out on getting to play Ariel in The Tempest she's going to cut all her hair off and become an accountant."

"Santa has a very comprehensive benefit package," Raven agreed solemnly.

"Sometimes I dye my hair to match the circus themes," Rapunzel agreed, the corner of her mouth twitching despite her better efforts. "We're between acts right now but last month it was green. You know, for our holiday show."

Kathy was going to try not to blush at that. "Did you know that Tuesday opened the 114th US Congress?" she asked the room at large. "They're going to give their all in an attempt to outdo our last Congress in their ability to get absolutely nothing done!"

Nerrrrd.

"And I'm always happy to show off some of my awesome gymnast moves. It's a gift."

"I'm a junior, actually," Kathy said, lingering after class. "So you've got another year of me in your classes."

"Well, both houses are now Republican, so it's a fairly good bet they'll probably end up accidentally locking themselves into either chamber at some point," Josh said, nodding.

"Excellent," Josh said, winking at her. "I totally winged it on the gymnast thing too."

"That I actually am," Kathy said, smiling back. "Though definitely not Olympic level."

Well, now that she had her power, she probably could be, but Kathy thought that would be cheating and so had resigned herself to non-competitive gymnastics only.

"So that was just a really good guess?" she asked. "About me being a gymnast, I mean?"

"Well, you're little," Josh said. "Thought basketball was probably a stretch."

"I didn't entirely suck as baseball in my last high school?" Kathy offered with a small laugh. "But I appreciate not having to pretend to know anything more about baseball than what I learned in gym class."

She'd been a decent pitcher, mostly because of her practice with ball rhythm gymnastics.

"Anyway, Mr. Lyman, I was wondering if you needed a TA this term...?"

"I do," Josh said, grinning. "You up for getting me coffee?"

"How do you like yours?" Kathy asked. "Or should I just bring a lot of cream and sugar and let you fix your own."

Lucky for Josh, Kathy would be able to run to the Perk and back long before his coffee could get cold. Even in this weather.

Kaylin Neya

Kaylin was wearing her usual brown tunic and leggings, hair pushed up into a knot with a stick holding it in place. the bruise had mostly faded from the side of her face.

And... she was confused. What was a backstory and how did she introduce someone she didn't know?

Johnny Storm

"Hey everyone," Johnny said. "This right here is a lovely freshman named Kaylin Neya and if she's not the best damn NASCAR driver the world has ever seen, then I don't know who is."

Johnny was dressed like normal today. Short sleeved shirt, jeans, and cocky grin on his face at all times. It was his favorite accessory.

"Black like my soul, and sweet like my character," Josh told her, grinning. "Two sugars, no cream."

Joker Moreau

Joker was wearing his usual attire: a tight t-shirt and long pants made from synthetic fabric and a navy baseball cap with a gold logo that looked sort of like an "A" on it. Also, polycarbonate-and-metal leg braces and crutches.

"Ladies and gentlemen, give it up for Johnathan K. Storm! He's a junior from New York City, one of the best dancers this side of the Rockies, and has a voice like an angel -- and yet, no Broadway credits to his name, at least not yet. When he's not busy entertaining the ladies, he likes riding his motorcycle through the mountains. And he's just taken up Tae Kwon Do, but only because the yoga class was full."

"I'm pretty sure I can remember that," Kathy said, laughing. "It'll be tough, but I'll give it my all."

Kaylin wasn't sure what a NASCAR driver was, but she hoped they went really fast. "I'm fast, that's for sure," she said, glancing at him to see if that was correct.
