Pinkie Pie had on a chef's hat and a yellow and blue mustache drawn on her face with icing.

She liked to make a good first impression. Derek had no yellow and blue mustache (he had a pretty epic stubble beard going on) and no need to make a good first impression. Instead, he had a frown.

The frown might have been aimed at the icing mustache. Because how did she even manage that?

The world may never know.

"Hihihihi everypony!" Pinkie greeted with a manic wave of a hoof. "Welcome to Friendship is . . . Baking? No, that was last time. Psssst!" she hissed sotto voce at Derek. "What did we officially name this one again?"

Oh god, she wanted Derek to remember? "Cake… decorating?" he ventured.

"Friendship is cake decorating?" Pinkie frowned thoughtfully. "That doesn't sound very snazzy. And it doesn't have nearly enough exclamation points on it. Oh well!" She threw up her hooves in a "whatever" kind of gesture. "Welcome to a friendshippy class about cakes! I'm Pinkie Pie!" And she held up a heart-shaped cake with her winking face drawn on it, framed by her yellow and blue cutie mark, with an illegible scrawl of black icing as a caption. "See?"

"She's real, you're not hallucinating," Derek added dryly. "You get used to it."

"He's Derek," Pinkie said, and held up another cake, this one circular with a big grey wolf on it. "Isn't he talented?!"

Derek huffed because that cake had been for friendship only, Pinkie. Not for sharing. "We're going to introduce ourselves with a cake that says something about you."

Friendship is sharing, Derek. "We've gots lots and lots and lots of different cakes for you!" Pinkie said, holding up several different shaped blank sheetcakes along with the two decorated ones she already had. "And lots and lots and lots of different colored icings!" A veritable rainbow of icing bags were added to the array, all held up at the end of a hoof. Seriously, was she secretly a bright pink milipede? "And what class would be complete without glitter!"

The big vat of shiny edible gold dust was apparently just one item too many for her. Pinkie went from proud to distressed as she stumbled, then desperately tried to keep all the cakes and icings and glitters balanced. She staggered back and forth across the room, letting out little "whoooooooooaaaaa, whooooooooooooooaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa"s as she went.

The students might want to take cover.

Thankfully, Kira was prepared for class with Pinkie (and Derek), so she got right to work icing her cake. Stripes of pink and purple had seemed better as a concept than actual practice, so they weren't so much stripes as different patches of icing. Her name, in black icing, came out a lot better. Now she just had to figure out what else to draw on it. She'd considered a sword for about two seconds before realizing there was no way she could make one without it looking dirty, and that was just not right considering her teachers.

"No foxes?" Derek thought he was hilarious.

"I was considering that, but I don't know whether to draw just a face or a whole body. It'd probably look weird either way," she said, sighing. "Did you have a good break?"

"Yes." He might even gotten a very faint tan! "You?"

"It was better than I expected. It was the first time I really spent a ton of time with my mom since... you know, I found out about everything." At least, she thought she knew everything now. "But we didn't really fight about anything and I got to see a bunch of my dad's relatives and it was just a nice break."

"That's... good. Family is important." Said the orphan. "Has she explained more?"

"Not really. I know there's more family history that I don't know about, but I've decided to focus more on myself and figuring out my own limitations and what I can do." She gave him a small smile. "That's the grown-up approach, right?"

"Sure." Derek just ran head first into danger and then brooded about it. So. "We can meet up to get you more used to fighting if you want."

"That'd be awesome! I mean, I'd appreciate it," Kira said. "I promise not to beat you up too badly."

"Thanks. So much."

"You're way better at this than me," Amy said with just a bit of envy. "I think Mr. Hale is a few minutes away from going all Gordon Ramsay on me."

"Don't worry about him, his bark is way worse than his bite," Kira said, trying not to crack up at herself. She lowered her voice, making sure Derek wasn't watching. "He's a super softie inside, shhh. Ms. Pie wouldn't keep working with him if he wasn't."

"Does that mean she is too?" Amy wondered quietly. "I'm trying to figure out if her enthusiasm is because she really loves everything or because she's going to murder all of us and she's really psyched about it."

"She hasn't murdered anyone yet, as far as I know?" Kira said uncertainly. "She really does love everything, especially when it comes to sweets and parties and everyone being friends."

"If you say so," Amy relented. That was a little reassuring. She didn't want to get murdered by a pink horse. "And Mr. Hale loves... really well-decorated cakes? And wolves, apparently?"

Amy was a disappointment on both counts.

"He does have a thing for wolves. I mean, he likes them." Seriously Kira, work on that phrasing. "I think he just likes working with Ms. Pie because really, no matter how crazy you might feel, it's easier to see yourself as normal when she's around."

"You know, that's a really good point," Amy said with a tilt of her head. "All my insecurities are kind of melting away in this room. It's like magic." Wait. "It's not, right?"

She was mostly kidding with that question.

"Probably not? Unless the frosting is laced with something weird. But I don't think our teachers would do that to us." After a moment, Kira added, "Well, not these teachers."
