Friendship is Cakes!! - 3rd Period, Wednesday

Pinkie Pie had on a chef's hat and a yellow and blue mustache drawn on her face with icing.

She liked to make a good first impression. Derek had no yellow and blue mustache (he had a pretty epic stubble beard going on) and no need to make a good first impression. Instead, he had a frown.

The frown might have been aimed at the icing mustache. Because how did she even manage that?

The world may never know.

"Hihihihi everypony!" Pinkie greeted with a manic wave of a hoof. "Welcome to Friendship is . . . Baking? No, that was last time. Psssst!" she hissed sotto voce at Derek. "What did we officially name this one again?"

Oh god, she wanted Derek to remember? "Cake… decorating?" he ventured.

"Friendship is cake decorating?" Pinkie frowned thoughtfully. "That doesn't sound very snazzy. And it doesn't have nearly enough exclamation points on it. Oh well!" She threw up her hooves in a "whatever" kind of gesture. "Welcome to a friendshippy class about cakes! I'm Pinkie Pie!" And she held up a heart-shaped cake with her winking face drawn on it, framed by her yellow and blue cutie mark, with an illegible scrawl of black icing as a caption. "See?"

"She's real, you're not hallucinating," Derek added dryly. "You get used to it."

"He's Derek," Pinkie said, and held up another cake, this one circular with a big grey wolf on it. "Isn't he talented?!"

Derek huffed because that cake had been for friendship only, Pinkie. Not for sharing. "We're going to introduce ourselves with a cake that says something about you."

Friendship is sharing, Derek. "We've gots lots and lots and lots of different cakes for you!" Pinkie said, holding up several different shaped blank sheetcakes along with the two decorated ones she already had. "And lots and lots and lots of different colored icings!" A veritable rainbow of icing bags were added to the array, all held up at the end of a hoof. Seriously, was she secretly a bright pink milipede? "And what class would be complete without glitter!"

The big vat of shiny edible gold dust was apparently just one item too many for her. Pinkie went from proud to distressed as she stumbled, then desperately tried to keep all the cakes and icings and glitters balanced. She staggered back and forth across the room, letting out little "whoooooooooaaaaa, whooooooooooooooaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa"s as she went.

The students might want to take cover.

This was definitely the weirdest room Amy had ever been in.

The way things were going, it looked like she was going to spend most of the class period staring. Her cake, sloppily assembled toward the end of class, was decorated with a bad icing rendition of a film reel.

"'Cause I like documentaries." That was her presentation. Wasn't it thorough?

"I'm not a very good artist," Amy said by way of defense, holding up her hands as proof. They were completely covered with icing and sprinkles. "Plus I don't actually like frosting."

That wasn't really true. Frosting was okay. What she really didn't like was getting frosting all over herself and her clothes.

"No plans here," she promised. "But I decided a minimalist approach would be better for self-expression."

Total bullshit, but maybe he could respect the effort? She could dream, anyway.

Stars were definitely better than glitter. Amy was still having glitter flashbacks from the picnic. She dutifully reached for the green icing.

And then, "Is she always so... bubbly?" She said 'bubbly' like it was a curse word. Because, c'mon.

"I bet," Amy mumbled, trying to imagine what a subdued pink pony would be like.

Finally she finished off a really shaky attempt at a star. Only she had tried to make it too small for the thickness of the icing, so it was kind of a blob. "Ta-da."

"Documentaries?"

After five days here, Hanna's paranoia had settled down to the point where it was nice to see familiar, new faces.

"Yeah, they're like informational movies about real world issues?" she explained. "Like the water crisis in Sudan, or student loan debt here in the US, or genital plastic surgery in Europe." That had been a weird one to watch with her stepsister. "My best friend and I watch a lot of them. Usually about stuff we've never heard of before, so we walk away feeling like we learned a lot."

Hanna considered this, putting a little curlicue on the edge of her cake. "I think that watching those would be valuable. Although I'm not certain what the circumstances would be for the last topic." Perhaps someone was in an accident? Or had been interrogated too harshly?

"Apparently a lot of people get them for comfort reasons, like if they can't sit comfortably or they're really prone to infections because of the way everything is oriented down there," she explained matter-of-factly. "But others get them because they're embarrassed or they just don't like the look. And then some people do it after a pregnancy."

Very educational, Amy.

"I can send you a link to download that one if you want," she added helpfully.

Hanna nodded seriously, considering that, then said, "I would appreciate that... although, I have no email to send it to, as yet."

She hadn't found the computer room yet, didn't have even a burner phone, and would be happy to send you her comments after she did, Amy.

"Oh, gotcha." You should get on that, Hanna. Email was the world's best medium for communication! "I bet there's a library around here where you could fix that. It could be useful for class stuff, too."

Although based on this class, she wasn't so sure about that.

"Library?" Ooooooooooooooooooooooooooo.

Now you have Hanna's full and undivided attention, Amy! Books! Books, she knows! She's lived her whole life with only two. A library--

"I need to find that."

Need. YES.

Whoa. That was a lot of interest in the library.

"I'm not actually sure where it is," Amy added apologetically. "But let me know where it is if you find it? My old school's library only had books that were salvaged from a censorship van and they were kind of hard to read." Because most of them had been grazed by flames.

"Oooo, neato keen!" Pinkie enthused. "What's your favorite?"

Pinkie knew nothing at all about documentaries. That would not stop her enthusiasm.

"Oh man, that's tough," Amy said, biting her lip as she thought about it. "I saw one about Susan Sontag that was really balanced and well-made. Or, oh, there's one about international students who grow up speaking a different language from their parents and what that does to the family. That one made my friend cry."

She could go on, but decided that was enough for now. "Do you watch documentaries too? I'm always looking for new ones to watch." It was true. Back home she and Karma watched about three a week.

Pinkie shrugged. Which is a nice trick when you kind of didn't have shoulders. "I'll watch just about anything," she said. "We don't have a lot of movies back home in Equestria." The technology didn't always support it, after all. "And no tvs. So everything is still all shiny and new to me here!"

Re: Decorate a Cake!

[personal profile] princessarcasm 2015-01-07 04:37 pm (UTC)(link)
"Ah." Because of course she lived somewhere named Equestria. "Well, I saw one about horse grooming the other week? You might... um, have opinions... on it..."

She trailed off, realizing that no, Pinkie probably wasn't the right audience for that.

Pinkie looked thoughtful. "If it's about human world horses that might just be kinda weird," she decided finally. "They're all only brown or gray or black or white instead of all the different colors and they don't even talk or have cutie marks. They're so weird!"

Really? They were weird?

"If it helps, some of the horses in this one had Bedazzled saddles," she offered. "I think they were from Dallas."

Re: Decorate a Cake!

Pinkie didn't know what that meant. "I don't know what that means." She didn't actually represent the spirit of honesty, but that didn't mean she wasn't into it as a general rule.

Re: Decorate a Cake!

"Bedazzled or Dallas?" she checked. "Bedazzling is pretty much decorating something with rhinestones. It's pretty colorful and shiny and stuff." Since Pinkie seemed to be into that. "And Dallas is a city near where I'm from. The people are kind of eccentric. Especially when it comes to horse decorating, apparently."
