The first class was being held in a regular classroom today, which might become a rarity here. And at the front was Kitty, half sitting on her desk.

"Hey, everybody, and welcome to Adulting 101," she greeted them. "For those of you who haven't had me yet, I'm Kitty Pryde, I don't really care what you call me as long as it's not something rude, and I'm going to hopefully teach you a little about how to survive in the adult world. So, I went to a school a lot like this when I was your age, and when I left I went off to college and figured everything would be easy, and then it started hitting that I needed to find a place to live and I was going to have to find a job so I could buy these bills I didn't realize would be so high and there are all these stupid little things you have to handle when you're on your own that you didn't really think would be an issue. So I'm going to do my best to help you guys learn and navigate that sort of stuff so you'll know how to do it when the time comes.

"It's the first week, so we're going to get to introductions before you're all sick of them. I want to know your name, year, and when and where you're from. I'm working from a present day Earth perspective, and if I need to adjust lesson plans, it's easier to do if I know now. Let's start with you there."

"Flick, senior," he said, getting that out of the way quick. "Born in Connecticut but I consider New York to be more of a home than Connecticut ever was."

"So this is something you're going to be dealing with soonish then," Kitty said.

"Unfortunately," he said because he really didn't want to deal with this at all. "Not looking forward to it."

"I'm Raven Darkholme," Raven said. "I'm a junior. I'm from Westchester, New York, where it's currently 1955."

What's up, Kurt's mom?

"Slight difference between then and now, but I can see what I can do about that here," Kitty told her.

Raven shrugged. "It's okay if you can't work it out. I'm not really sure I want to go back to the fifties when I graduate, anyway."

"Hello again, Miss Pryde," Cosette began, cheerfully. "I hope you don't feel I'm a nuisance being in your class every term. I'm Cosette, and I'm in my second year now -- which comes as a bit of a surprise to me, honestly -- and I come from Paris in 1829. I don't know that we're likely to go back, though, since Father seems to like it here, so may as well learn as much as I can about getting along in this time."

"Take all my classes," Kitty smiled. "And okay, that's cool. So there might be some culture shock there, but you seem to be adjusting well so far."

"It was going to be quite the adjustment no matter what, after the convent," Cosette admitted with a laugh, "though I hadn't expected it to be this much of one. I don't mind, though. I like learning about new things, and that makes it less daunting -- especially since it means learning about a lot of things that make life easier."

It was a good incentive.

"Emma Swan, senior." Boy did that feel strange to be saying. "I'm from Maine, about fifteen years back."

"So this is coming up for you, too," Kitty said.

"Yeah, pretty much." No more assured hot meals and roof over her head.

It was easier when nearly everyone else had gone first. And when there was at least one or two familiar faces, in a group of only a half-dozen.

"My name is Hanna Heller. I am a sophomore. Year, 2011." She kept her eyes steady. "I have lived in Finland and Germany."

There. Not even a lie! Just a slight misrepresentation.

"You're a new face," Kitty smiled. "Glad to have you here."

"Thank you," Hanna said, her smile becoming more real. "I did not sign up for this course. But I think it will be useful?"

"That happens here sometimes," Kitty assured her. "And hopefully we can have some fun here, too."

"My name's Eleanor L--" Eleanor stopped short, and started again with a grin. "Sorry. Eleanor Holloway. I'm a junior, and I come from a place called Rapture, which is at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean. It's the year 1968, there, but we cut off contact with the outside world sometime in the mid-1940s, so we haven't much technology past then."

"I'm Kira Yukimura, I'm a sophomore, and I'm from New York in the present. Where being an adult is kind of awful," she added helpfully.
