Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

There were chairs and tables set up all across the lawn; some were by the bonfire, for the people who wanted to be warm and central to everything else at the picnic, and some were set farther away from the action, for the people who wanted more peace and quiet.

There was no escaping the glitter though. Sorry, but not really.

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"I didn't say everyone," Vider corrected, "just someone. There's another boy here from my world, Soren--he's a berserker, too, so you'll know him by his tattoo--but no one else has ever heard of the United States of Asgard. And to Soren and me, all these worlds with a 'United States of America,' where the gods don't walk and they don't have berserkers or trolls or magic, are weird. And that's saying nothing of the people from other planets entirely."

Hanna having very little exposure - read: none - to modern science fiction, couldn't quite follow all of this. "Other planets." She frowned, trying to put that in context, and said hesitantly, "Is this widely known? I... don't know some things that are common knowledge, but I thought I would have heard..."

Yeah. Growing up in isolated Finnish wilderness skews your perceptions a bit.

"Not where I come from, it's not," Vider admitted, "and enough people here get surprised by it that I would say it's not in a lot of other places, too. But, they're here, and some of them have very consistent stories, so I guess they're telling the truth." She shrugged, like, 'what can you do?' "This island isn't like other places. I don't think it's really in any one world, more like it occupies its own place on the World Tree." This might be blasphemy, but it wasn't like she had a priest around to check with, and as far as ways of making sense of Fandom went, well, it was what she had.

"Oh." The World Tree she'd read about, too. So maybe, maybe, she could hide here for a while? This was nothing Papa had trained her for... but then, there were other things he hadn't prepared her for either.

"Do you like it here?" she asked, her voice small.

"I do," Vider told her. "Everyone's very accepting, I'm not stuck in a war band with a bunch of grown annoying men, and the education's probably more useful than I'd be getting in one of the fancy liberal arts schools back home. All around, it's pretty good here."

So. Staying for a while-- might work. At least it sounded safe, and possibly helpful? She'd have to do more research, but for now. For now, she was going to eat these orange things. And maybe hope that she had found a friend.

"Thank you, Vider." Hanna smiled a little, and offered her her plate. "Would you like one?"

Vider was not sure she trusted those things (they were very orange), but she didn't want to put Hanna off, so she took one and smiled at her. "Thanks. I hope you'll enjoy it here."
