Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

There were chairs and tables set up all across the lawn; some were by the bonfire, for the people who wanted to be warm and central to everything else at the picnic, and some were set farther away from the action, for the people who wanted more peace and quiet.

There was no escaping the glitter though. Sorry, but not really.

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"Some people think it does," Kaylin said. "The How can sometimes help you figure out how to get out of something you don't want."

"If I don't want it, I'll just leave," Ronan said. Gansey hadn't said he had to stay, just that he had to try. "Simple to get out of it. Easy."

"You're lucky then," Kaylin said a bit glumly. "I have to stay- and pass my classes - if I want to become a Hawk."

Her eyes strayed to the tables. "At least they have lots of good food?"

"If that's the best thing about this place, I'm gonna hate to see the worst, I know it," Ronan answered, glancing at the table. "It's just food."

"Yes, but it's free," Kaylin explained. Silly boy. Didn't he understand that? Of course, free food for someone who went hungry more often than not back home was different from that of most people.

Ronan waited for the part where he should start to care about the free food but it didn't come.

"Let me guess, they put that in the brochure for this place to tempt people here," he said, voice dry. "Such a good motivator, after all."

She considered that for a moment. "If I knew what a brochure was I might be able to answer that. But it would be a good thing to mention to someone, I suppose. Might make up for some of the crazy stuff."

"You're not going to give me some presentation on this place too, are you?" Because been there, done that.

"Do you want me to?" she said, looking as bothered by the idea as he probably felt. "I'd really rather not."

Kaylin looked around for a teacher type. "I'm sure someone else would be better at it. I'm a pretty bad student."

"I don't need another lecture about this place," he said, holding up a hand. "I don't want you or a teacher or anyone to give it to me. I don't need warnings. I'll deal with anything."

"Oh good." That was a relief.

"It's not like you can really prepare for the unexpected anyway, right?"

"People seem to really love to try and talk about this tiny island," Ronan quipped, glancing around. He figured if there were any ley line readings, Gansey would be here. Since he wasn't, Ronan continued to think of this place as just some small, out of the way nuisance.

"I think mostly they like to try to freak out the new students and teachers," Kaylin admitted. "As if seeing a talking pink pony wouldn't do that all by itself."

"Talking pink pony," Ronan repeated blankly. "To go along with the space aliens, I guess?"

"I suppose," Kaylin said after a minute. "Most of those you can't tell just by looking at them, though, so they didn't bother me till later."

"Uh huh." This place was freaking insane. He thought he'd seen some ridiculous shit back home but these people were like walking acid trips. "As long as they stay out of my way, they can do whatever they want."

"People pretty much leave you alone if you want." Not Kaylin necessarily, he'd probably figured that out already. "But most of them are actually pretty nice."

"Yeah, people keep telling me that." And it wasn't making any sort of difference on his feelings about being here. "Guess that means we'll all be one big happy family before the day's out."

No.

She made a face at that. "Ew... I hope not. Not that most of them aren't nice and all, but family... it ought to mean more than that."
