Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

There were chairs and tables set up all across the lawn; some were by the bonfire, for the people who wanted to be warm and central to everything else at the picnic, and some were set farther away from the action, for the people who wanted more peace and quiet.

There was no escaping the glitter though. Sorry, but not really.

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"Treating you like trash?" Nathan frowned in the Chantry soldier's direction. "She doesn't even know you, though."

Anders smiled. It was a bitter, weak kind of smile. "As if that ever matters," he said. "I don't think she even wanted to know my name. She didn't tell me hers."

Nathan winced. "Sorry, Anders. Can I do anything?"

"Not really," Anders said in a low sigh. "Just ... be with me, all right? Even if I'm not the best company until this settles down one way or the other. I need you."

"Okay," Nathan murmured, sliding closer and trying to tangle his fingers with Anders'. "I won't go anywhere. I'll stay around."

"Thank you," Anders said, hesitating just a second before clutching at Nathan's fingers and leaning in for a kiss. Normally he wasn't much for physical contact in public, but right then he needed that little moment outside time to remind himself everything would be all right. (It would. Somehow.)

Nathan was a little surprised by the sudden kiss but not enough to not respond. He squeezed his fingers around Anders' and stepped closer, trying to give Anders the comfort he seemed to need right now.

Anders pulled back after a long moment, keeping their fingers tangled even as he stepped back. "Thanks, love," he said, sounding steadier. "That helped. Just -- reminding myself someone cares."

"Someone does," Nathan assured him, nodding. "I'm sorry she made you think otherwise."

"I know," Anders said, and gave the Seeker one final angry look before turning softer eyes back to Nathan. "Speaking of caring, could you come by the shop tomorrow? I ended up getting something for you."

He thought he'd gotten the present thing right, but he was still weirdly nervous as to how Nathan would react. Which was probably why he'd waited until a few days after the New Year to bring it up.

"Yeah, I can stop by," Nathan told him, nodding and smiling a bit. "You got me something? You didn't have to do that. I'll come by no matter what."

"I know, but I like giving you extra reasons," Anders smiled. "And I like knowing I have that to look forward to."

"Will you be okay tonight?" Nathan asked quietly. "After this is over and when she's still...around but with less people to keep an eye on her?"

"I should be," Anders said, but his jaw wobbled. "I don't think she's the type to try anything physical. But if you just want to keep me company ... I'd like that."

He was still trying not to sound needy. It was hard to avoid when he feltneedy.

"We could go to the preserve for awhile," Nathan suggested. "She won't know the area like I will. She won't be able to find you without me knowing."

"I'd really like that," Anders nodded, after a pause. "Not just because of her, but ...I think it'd be good to be someplace peaceful. Picnic's a little overwhelming even for me."

"There's a lot of people here." That was Nathan's way of agreeing. "And space would probably do you good. We can go now, if you'd like."

Anders' face was purely grateful. "Maker's breath, that sounds fantastic. Let's."

"Okay." Nathan gave his hand another squeeze and then started walking them both towards the preserve. There'd be other picnics to stay late at.
