Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

There were chairs and tables set up all across the lawn; some were by the bonfire, for the people who wanted to be warm and central to everything else at the picnic, and some were set farther away from the action, for the people who wanted more peace and quiet.

There was no escaping the glitter though. Sorry, but not really.

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Kira's first reaction was to shake her head a little, which really only made the situation worse. "I figured that might happen. It's kind of typical when there are parties and stuff here," she said, laughing. "Are you new?"

"Yep," Amy said, swinging her arms. "I guess you could call me a glitter novice. My old school was more into confetti. Easier to clean up."

"Yeah, I don't know how they get rid of all of it every time. I keep imagining people with giant vacuums," Kira said, laughing. "I'm Kira, by the way. Have you met your big sibling yet?" It was always good to see if people were somewhat informed about this place.

"I'm Amy. And I'm getting around to it," she promised because that thread was still a wee baby thread. "But I already got the 'my roommate is blue' speech, so I think I'm in a great place information-wise."

Her head was exploding, but it was exploding really quietly. Amy considered that pretty good, considering.

"So - tell me if this is rude to ask, but are you one of the people who were totally blown away by stuff like that when you got here, or are you one of the people where the whole blue mutant thing is totally chill and normal?"

No, Amy wasn't already in need of a 'totally blown away by this weirdness' support group, why do you ask?

"It's not rude to ask at all. I was totally blown away at first, because I've never been anywhere like this before. And then I discovered my mother is secretly a kitsune and I am too."

So, she'd at least visit that support group?

"But there's still a lot of stuff that surprises me," she added quickly. "In a good way. It's all kind of amazing."

"Positive adjectives, huh?" Amy wasn't sure she was willing to go that far just yet, but it meant something that Kira was, she supposed. "I guess I can reserve judgment for a while."

Maybe. She was a pretty judgey person. She'd give it a shot, anyway.

"So, where're you from? And what's a kitsune, anyway?" Amy, no. That road only led to more confusion and alarm.

"I'm from New York, and it's the 21st century there like it is here. Um, for the record and all." She wasn't trying to be scary, honest. "Kitsunes are like fox spirits - I can run really fast, and if anyone messes with me or my friends, I can beat them up. At least, sort of, I'm still working on that second part."

"Whoa. Nice perks." Amy was really doing her best to take this in stride. "I can't beat anyone up. Um, a cat knocked me to the ground once."

So congrats, Kira?

"You don't look like a fox," Amy added. Awkwardly. "But you probably knew that."

One of these days Amy was going to learn how to talk to pretty girls without saying completely inane things. She had to.

"Hey, cats can be super vicious! They've got those claws and they sneak up on you and attack," Kira said sympathetically.

In Amy's defense, Kira didn't know how to talk to a lot of people.

"I don't like, change into a fox or anything. A lot of it is stuff I'm still figuring out." After a moment, she perked up and smiled, because she didn't need to bother some nice new person with her family drama. "So, how did you end up in Fandom? Did you know you were being sent here?"

"Yeah, I actually kind of jumped at the opportunity," Amy said, perfectly willing to steer the conversation away from the very same confusing, alarming stuff that she had directed it toward in the first place. "My mom just got remarried and she wants to do some renovations, I guess as a sign that she wants to make the marriage last, and I volunteered my room for the builders to set up camp and do all the wall-crushing in."

"Wow, that's really nice of you," Kira said, sounding genuinely impressed. "I don't know if I'd want anyone messing around in my room, especially strangers. But how did that get you here?"
