Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

There were chairs and tables set up all across the lawn; some were by the bonfire, for the people who wanted to be warm and central to everything else at the picnic, and some were set farther away from the action, for the people who wanted more peace and quiet.

There was no escaping the glitter though. Sorry, but not really.

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"Hey, I thought I was being nice to myself," Travis said, making a face. "Plus, I wasn't really serious about the toucan thing anyway. I was trying to be funny, maybe a get a laugh or two."

Raven shrugged. "Ah. Sorry. I'm not very good with the self-effacing humor, I guess."

Travis waved that away. "No apology needed or anything. If It had been a different day, I might have been having a go at my self esteem but I'm trying to work on that. No need to worry today, though. I'm feeling pretty good."

"Good to hear," Raven said. "So no sibs or roommates, but have you managed to meet anyone new anyway?"

"Not today, no, and not lately," he answered with a shake of his head. "Between the holidays and everything, haven't really gotten out and about. Been just sticking to people from home and people that I know here. I probably need to work on the whole social thing."

"Being social is hard," Raven said. "Other than these parties, I've mostly only met new people when we go fight the bad guys."

"It's a lot different here than it is back home, that's for sure," Travis said agreeably. "People are nicer here, sure, but there's...I don't know, something hard about going from a place and people you were comfortable with and trying to make that happen again. I've been lucky. I've found and met a few good people here."

"I wouldn't know," Raven admitted. "I never really had that many friends back home."

"That just means you have to make up for that by having a lot of friends here," he decided, smiling a bit. "I had a handful of friends for awhile back home. We kind of drifted apart lately. Distance and other things."

"I've done okay here," Raven said. "It helps that I don't have to lie to people so much around here."

"Yeah, people here seem pretty accepting of some of the most off the wall things," he said idly. "It's definitely not like that back in Kansas City. New things don't sit well with a big part of the population."

"Most people are not very good with completely new things," Raven agreed. "Are people in Kansas City weird about your scar?"

"To say the least," he replied with a rueful snicker. "And they're still sending me mail to this day to be weird about it."

"What kind of mail?"

"I've got a stack of it shoved in my closet," he revealed, shrugging. "It ranges from hate mail and threats to mail that wants me to heal them."

Which made no sense since no one really knew about his scar besides the fact that it was a scar.

"Popular guy with strangers."

"Wow," Raven said. "That's . . . man, at least the people back home haven't tried to contact me here."

"I think I can blame my mom for the mail getting to me here," he said, which sounded ungrateful but not untrue. "She thinks the good letters will help me cope or something."

"Couldn't she sort it first, or something?" Raven asked.

"Maybe." Travis shrugged. "I told her not to send it period. It's nothing I really wanna read or have to deal with. It's too much."

"I can totally understand," Raven said. "You're in a new place. You should get to leave the messy stuff behind."

"That's what I'm working on," he said and smiled. "I'll have to go back there at some point and deal with it but that's a while off so I'm gonna try and have fun here."

He paused.

"Maybe even dance a little more than I have."

"Well, you know I'm a fan of that plan."

"Yeah? Where do you think I got the idea from?" Travis said easily.

"Clearly someone very clever."

"Clearly," he agreed with a nod. "We'll see if this ideas extends to dancing in front of people. That's still up in the air."
