Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

There were chairs and tables set up all across the lawn; some were by the bonfire, for the people who wanted to be warm and central to everything else at the picnic, and some were set farther away from the action, for the people who wanted more peace and quiet.

There was no escaping the glitter though. Sorry, but not really.

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"Really?" Edward said. "Now that sounds like a waste."

"I eat other things." He was really fond of sandwiches and meat, these days. "Just coming from a place where sweets weren't readily available means if I eat a ton of them, I'll get sick. And I don't do well when I'm sick."

Edward shook his head. "Sometimes I think you need to push yourself a bit further every now and again," he said. "But ah, it's a happy occasion. Met anyone interesting?"

"I've pushed myself plenty," Nathan argued because he really thought he had. "A few months ago, I'd still be in my room, hiding from all this."

He made a face and shook his head.

"But no, no one interesting."

"If only you had made your way to the picnic tables," Edward sighed. (It was a very over-the-top sigh.)

"So, you want me to eat when I'm not hungry?" Nathan asked, brow furrowing. "How will that benefit me when I'm full?"

"It means you won't be hungrier later?" Edward offered. "And it would give you a chance to socialize!"

Nathan sighed and shook his head. "Does talking with you not count as socializing? Are you exempt from that now, Edward?"

"Oh, I am a fantastic person to socialize with," Edward said modestly, "But I'm hardly a new person, am I?"

"If I don't socialize with anyone today, I'll probably get to it later," Nathan told him, shrugging. "I'm just not one to walk up to someone and immediately start a conversation about life and the weather."

"Maybe you should try," Edward argued. "People back home do it all the time. 'Hello.' 'Oh, hello.' 'The weather's dreadful, isn't it?' 'Yes, same as yesterday. Awful!'"

"Have you done that today?" Nathan asked him. "How many new friends do you have?"

"I've made at least one, but it's early days yet," Edward said easily. "I'm spending my time 'round the buffet table, seeing what turns up."

"Who's your new friend?" he asked. "A girl?"

"That one," Edward said, gesturing towards Anna. "She was kind enough to point out the chocolate fountain."

"And did you use the classic Edward charm on her?" Nathan wondered, snickering.

"And what if I did?" Edward said, grinning. "We can't all seclude ourselves."

"Secluding myself would mean not being here," he pointed out. "You're trying to make me seem like more of a recluse than I am."

"It's called a playful exaggeration," Edward said, tossing a piece of bread at him. "Don't be so serious."

"But, I'm good at it," Nathan argued lightly and tossed the bread back at Edward's head. "It's a talent."

"It's stubbornness, is what it is," Edward argued.

Not that he was stubborn himself or anything.

"There something wrong with that?" he had to wonder. "Pretty sure all of us are stubborn in one way or another."

"I'm not saying there's anything wrong about stubbornness, just that it's different than being a talent, isn't it?"

"I like meeting people at my own pace," he admitted. "I don't think that's going to change. I don't have charm or that much confidence. I do my best with what I have."

"Now confidence is something you can fake," Edward said easily. "The rest comes by itself, eventually."
