Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

There were chairs and tables set up all across the lawn; some were by the bonfire, for the people who wanted to be warm and central to everything else at the picnic, and some were set farther away from the action, for the people who wanted more peace and quiet.

There was no escaping the glitter though. Sorry, but not really.

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Carefully, in case he objected, Jalian ran her hand over his head to his back. "Oh, that does feel like it would be warm. And good for keeping dry, too. What does he do?" Yes, she was aware that pets in this timeline were mostly decorative, but Canute seemed more sturdy than most. "Or, what will he do when he's grown?" she amended.

"Well, his breed is meant to pull sleds," Elsa explained. "They're working dogs, and they can handle heavy loads in the coldest weather for miles and miles. I... don't really have any heavy loads for him to pull, he's mostly meant to be a companion. But I'm certain I can find something for him to do so that he doesn't get restless."

Canute was still wagging that tail a mile a minute, attempting to crane his head back to lick Jalian's hand. Hand! Hi hand! Hi friend!

Jalian nodded at the explanation, then laughed and let him lick her hand. "He's very friendly. I have nothing for you to pull," she told him apologetically. "But there is probably a stick to catch?" She looked to Elsa for permission before trying to find one.

"Oh, he likes sticks," Elsa replied with a nod, crouching down to let him off his leash. "He could chase them for... just about forever, and you'll have a friend for life."

A wee, fluffy friend for life. Who would eventually be a much larger fluffy friend for life. Possibly part bear. Who knew for sure?

"Sticks are very good," Jalian agreed solemnly, rubbing Canute's head. "I'll go and get one."

It didn't take long, and she came back with a decent-sized twig, rubbing the sides to get the roughest of the bark off. She showed it to him. "What do you think?"

Re: General Mingling [Spring 2015]

[identity profile] iceolatedqueen.livejournal.com 2015-01-03 02:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooh, she got rid of the bark! That meant that Canute was going to have to give one, just to show his approval! Or maybe he was just barking because he knew a good toy when he saw it, and she was going to throw it, right? Was she? She must be about to throw it!

"I think he likes it," Elsa laughed, covering her mouth a little, though her eyes were bright. "I mean, he does have very discerning tastes, as I'm certain you could tell."

[identity profile] kenselvren.livejournal.com 2015-01-03 03:09 pm (UTC)(link)
"Very discerning," Jalian agreed. She eyed him a moment longer, then took pity and threw the stick - not too far away, but enough to let him run a bit.

[identity profile] iceolatedqueen.livejournal.com 2015-01-03 03:16 pm (UTC)(link)
And Canute was off after it like a little bounding rocket!

"And there," Elsa announced, "you've made a friend, Jalian. You've passed the stick test."

"I shall keep this memory with that of my test of womanhood," Jalian answered gravely, trying not to laugh.

"Cherish it for always," Elsa replied, doing marginally better than Jalian at not laughing, now, as Canute puttered back with his stick. "It isn't every day you win the approval of a dog with such discerning tastes."

Canute was gonna make Jalian wrestle for the stick, now. WRESTLE FOR IT.

[identity profile] kenselvren.livejournal.com 2015-01-03 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
"I've never met such a discerning dog," Jalian agreed. Well, it came out more like, "I've NEVER, MET such a disCERNing DOG!" Because stick-wrestling. Stick-wrestling was serious business!

[identity profile] iceolatedqueen.livejournal.com 2015-01-03 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Very serious! You could tell by Canute's playful growl, and the way he was wagging his tail so hard that his entire butt was going along with it.

"Fortunately, since you've passed the test, you won't have to worry about winning the favor of other dogs in the future," Elsa declared. Which wasn't at all how it worked, but whatever. "Since you've appealed to the best there is, of course."

Re: General Mingling [Spring 2015]

[identity profile] kenselvren.livejournal.com 2015-01-03 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Jalian laughed and sat on the ground, taking Canute's growly, licky, stick-infested face in both hands to scritch. "O great Canute, best of all dogs, will you vouch for me with others of your kind?"

Re: General Mingling [Spring 2015]

[identity profile] iceolatedqueen.livejournal.com 2015-01-03 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
It was remarkable, how he was going to attempt to bark, even with a stick in his mouth and Jalian's hands on his face. But there it was. Bark! Elsa recommended, Canute approved. And so it would be, for always.

That, or he wanted belly rubs. One of those things.

Elsa was crouching down nearby, smiling warmly.

"And there you have it," she announced. "He'll put a good word in for you from now on."

"I'm very pleased to hear it." Jalian grinned at him, then finally managed to get the stick away and tossed it again. "So much here is so different, but puppies are just the same. Well," she corrected, "a bit fuzzier."

[identity profile] iceolatedqueen.livejournal.com 2015-01-04 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
"A puppy is a puppy," Elsa decided, watching him bound off after the stick, smiling. "He's the first one I've had much experience with, unless Barry counts when he turns into a dog. And... I really don't think he does."

Far too smart, for one. Far too cranky, for another.

[identity profile] kenselvren.livejournal.com 2015-01-04 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
"He does not." Jalian rolled her eyes. "Is he as grumpy as a puppy as he is a human?" She'd only really known him in class.

Re: General Mingling [Spring 2015]

[identity profile] iceolatedqueen.livejournal.com 2015-01-04 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
"Oh, no. He is far more grumpy as a puppy," Elsa shared, smiling impishly. "But he's so fluffy, I can't bring myself to care."

Re: General Mingling [Spring 2015]

[identity profile] kenselvren.livejournal.com 2015-01-04 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
Jalian snickered. "As fluffy as Canute? Just think, they can play together next time it happens!"

Re: General Mingling [Spring 2015]

[identity profile] iceolatedqueen.livejournal.com 2015-01-04 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
"As fluffy, but much, much smaller. Just so long as Canute doesn't sit on him, puppy playtime should work out just fine."

... Should.

Re: General Mingling [Spring 2015]

[identity profile] kenselvren.livejournal.com 2015-01-04 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
"You should take pictures," Jalian decided. "Then if you ever need him to do something, they'll make excellent blackmail."

Re: General Mingling [Spring 2015]

[identity profile] iceolatedqueen.livejournal.com 2015-01-04 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
"Usually, I can get away with asking very nicely," Elsa confided. "But making big eyes at him sometimes helps."

It was not actually difficult for Elsa to have her way, around Barry.

Re: General Mingling [Spring 2015]

[identity profile] kenselvren.livejournal.com 2015-01-04 05:00 am (UTC)(link)
Jalian scrunched up her nose. "I'm not very good at that sort of thing. I prefer blackmail."

Re: General Mingling [Spring 2015]

[identity profile] iceolatedqueen.livejournal.com 2015-01-04 05:04 am (UTC)(link)
"And I'm really no good at blackmail," Elsa replied, amused. "Though I suppose I could stand to pick up a few pointers, eventually."

"We should share our knowledge," Jalian proposed. "Then we would both be more dangerous."
