BWI Portalocity Lounge | Saturday Morning

One of the very few perks of having a meteorologist for a mother was that Amy could almost always avoid weather-related flight delays by relying on her mom for information. That was usually very convenient, but today it meant that due to anticipated late morning storms in northern Texas, Amy had been forced to fly in at ass o'clock in the morning so that she wouldn't run the risk of missing the bus to school. So it looked like she was the first person to reach the Fandom High banner in the airport lounge, and while Amy had always had hopes of one day winning a race, this wasn't quite what she had had in mind.

Armed with an overstuffed duffel bag and her favorite pair of sweatpants (they were decorated with little cartoon strips of bacon!), Amy stifled a heavy yawn and parked herself in a distant corner of the lounge where she could wait for more people to show up.

"You made up glitter?!" Anna asked, outraged enough to be distracted from her actual question. "That's mean! You got my hopes up! I was going to put glitter in my hair, and --"

Focus, Anna.

"Are you actually talking in my brain!?" she asked. "Because that girl over there is in armor and I've never seen what those big metal things are and so maybe I'm wondering if I hit my head."

//You'll get your fill of glitter before the day is through,// Jono promised, //and you probably haven't hit your head, so much as...//

He took a look at her dress.

//... Traveled through time, most likely. Yes, I am talking into your head. You'll get used to it, though there aren't many people around the island who do it on a regular basis.//

"I ... traveled through time," Anna said, slowly. Great. Either she hit her head, or this guy was crazy.

This guy talking in her head.

"Riiiiiiiiiight," she said. "So I did some time traveling, and that girl's totally a knight, and you're just talking in my head because you can do that. This kind of explains the purple glowy thing earlier."

School was going to seem really dull by comparison when she got there, tomorrow. After she woke up.

//That'd be a portal, hm? How you got from wherever you came from to here?//

It's okay, Anna. Jono was used to a healthy dose of skepticism.

//Th'girl with the sword is definitely... something. And yes, I am just talking in your head because I can do that. I can't imagine either of us know sign language, so this is the conversation you're going to have to make do with, luv.//

"You don't talk?" Anna asked, before taking another good look at the leather around his neck. "Are you -- okay? Did something happen?"

//Years and years ago,// Jono replied, shrugging his shoulders a little. //I'm as fine as I'm ever going to be, which is what matters. I can talk. S'what I'm doing right now. I'm just going about it a little more differently than most, aren't I?//

"I guess you're right," she nodded. "Then it's a good thing you can ..."

She waved a hand vaguely, near her temple, to indicate telepathy. That was where telepathy happened: in the proximity of her left ear.

"I mean, otherwise, how many people even know sign language?" It was an attempt at a joke. "You'd be stuck writing cards and waving them at people. Or ... something."

Not a very good attempt.

//I've had to resort to that on occasion, too,// Jono replied, shrugging and stuffing his hands into his pockets. //And then there was the 'yes or no button.' I'd rather not revisit the 'yes or no button' days, if I can help it. Would you like a hand with your luggage, luv?//

"Could you?" Anna asked. "I didn't know what to pack. I think I packed too much. But I thought, better to pack too much than to pack too little, and not have things you might need."

And that was why she was dragging around approximately six metric tons of dresses and knick-knacks.

//That would... definitely be unfortunate,// Jono replied, stepping up to inspect what she was bringing along. He was reasonably certain that he could fit it onto the bus. Somehow. //Though we're not so backwards on the island that you can't find a toothbrush and a pair of warm socks if you forget those at home.//
