The Art of Meditation and Kicking Ass [Thursday, December 11, 2014, 2nd period]

Anakin was sitting on the floor of the Danger Room looking grumpy above his Snuggie.

There was a small pile of them in the corner, but it didn't seem to matter how many time he took the Sith-benighted things off. There was always another.

Also like the Sith.

"Right," he said as the class came in. "Final. It's practical because everything else in this class has been practical. First you must find your inner stillness and stay motionles for fifteen minutes, then you can go beat up a practice dummy."

The dummy? Also wearing a Snuggie.

"Have a safe holiday season. Next semester I will be teaching ethics, so I hope to see some of you there."

Alana was not good at not moving. She did her best, but either her feet itched or her shoulders felt stiff or she was going to go crazy if she looked at the same corner for another second ...

It was a relief when the fifteen minutes were up.

Kathy had been out late in Baltimore the night before. She was staying still, but only because she'd, well, fallen asleep.

Johnny snuggled up in his Snuggie, leaned against a wall, and tried to sneakily nap. BY ACCIDENT REALLY.

On the other hand, fighting was something Alana was good at. The poor dummy never knew what hit it, and its head was hanging by a few treads by the time she was done.

At the end of class, Alana wandered up to Anakin in her Snuggie.

"Hey," she said. "Thanks for trying to help last week. Sorry I was such an ass."

"Of course," Anakin said, furrowing his brow. "You're all right now?"

"I guess?" Alana said, with a little shrug. "Having somebody else take over my body was not the best experience ever. But I'm, y'know. Dealing."

She'd been muted all week, like there was a layer of cotton between her and the world.

Anakin gave her a "I'm totally humoring you" look. "Sure. I'm Dean of Students so if you ever...stop really dealing, let me know, okay? I'll check back in on you in January, but call my office number if you need an adult before then."

"Thanks, I will. And I think I'm going to go home for part of break," Alana admitted in a long exhale. (The 'thanks' was quick but sincere: She liked Professor Skywalker.) "Being someplace that isn't here, being around different people ... it seems like it should help."

Not that home was super-duper-happy for Alana, but it wasn't here, and she hadn't been back to Landfall in well over a year. Right then, she craved the familiarity of it.

Anakin nodded. "It might," he agreed. "But I know that when I went home, I was always trading Fandom crazy for...slightly more familiar crazy."

Alana laughed. "My stepmom's 22," she said. "She's going to take me shopping and try to talk boys. But --- familiar crazy. Like you said."

"My wife's a year older than my oldest son and daughter," Anakin shared, smiling ruefully. "Things get confusing."

"Even -- my stepmother -- is my dad's midlife crisis," Alana explained, sounding halfway fond. "She's nice, she's just ... it's weird. I went to camp with her, you know?"

Anakin laughed, blushing slightly. "Yeah, Luke and Rory were in school together here. My family tree is...weird. It's just weird."

"I think most of 'em are," Alana offered. "And then you have little kids with Rory, right?"

She was slightly confused because Anakin didn't look anywhere near old enough to have adult kids, but it seemed like the kind of thing it was rude to ask about.

Anakin nodded. "Juliet and Christopher," he said. "Christopher's about the same age as Leia's twins."

Weird. Weeeeird.

"How does that go?" Alana wondered. "Do you make them call him Uncle and all of that?"

"They haven't met yet," Anakin admitted. "I think we might just skip the uncle thing. It's going to be weird enough."

Alana crinkled her nose. "Probably that'll be easiest," she decided.

"I should let you get on with your vacation," Anakin admitted. "Please let me know if there's anything I can do to help--this wasn't my first experience with Fandom being...uncomfortable."

"I've heard some stories," Alana said. "And ... yeah. I'll check in with you when I get back. Maybe even take that ethics class."
