Public Service - On the Edge, Monday, Period 2
"Alright, rookies," Reno said, smiling easily as he leaned against the Causeway railings. "Last class, last trip to Edge. Gonna be a pretty easy one, yo. We'll be listening to a member from the WRO - remember those armed guards that were set up, and our talking cat friend - give us some parting shots, and then we'll be hangin' out at Tifa's bar. Not drinkin' booze, though. It's a last-day-of-class, 'we did some good here' party, but I'm supposed to pretend to be at least a little bit responsible here and get her to keep the alcohol away, anyway."
A beat.
"Corel Ale tastes like shit. You ain't missin' out on nothin'. I brought some food from the island there earlier, we'll have pizza and soda and you're all gonna like it. So come on. Asses through the portal to Edge one last time, yo."
It was a tough life that Reno made his students lead.
And it was just a few minutes more before they were stepping through the portal into the back room of The Seventh Heaven bar, where Cait Sith was already waiting for them, giving them all a bright smile and a hearty wave hello as they arrived.
"It's good to see ye all," he said, in his almost comically thick brogue. "I've got a message to deliver this time around, from a close friend of mine!"
The little cat thing held up what looked like a portable tablet screen, and a man's face appeared on it, smiling at them almost as warmly as Cait Sith had been.
"I'm Reeve Tuesti," he shared, "founder and leader of the World Regenesis Organization. My friend Cait Sith here tells me that you've all done a lot of hard work for the people of Edge. There are already families making steady use of the water that your filters are bringing to the city, and a few have even noticed the plants that you've put into the ground, and have started tending to them as well." He gave a small, fond smile. "My mother always wanted a garden, when she was living in Midgar. I think she would have been happy to know that, maybe someday soon, there will be people living in Midgar's shadow, in the city that sprang up from its ashes, who can have gardens of their own."
Cait Sith sniffled and needed to rearrange the tablet for a moment so that he could sniffle and wipe something from his eye. Reeve pressed on.
"Beyond clean water to drink and even a possibility of bringing life to the ground around Midgar's ruins, you've given Edge's people something far more important than that," he continued. "The people I've got in Edge are telling me little stories each day about the sense of community that's started to spring up because of these filters. The people who, after your projects were sabotaged, pulled together to try to help. And out of that community, people are finding a renewed sense of hope. They've lost everything far too many times to count, now. First the land, and then, for many, family and friends, and their city. Edge and Midgar have been a home to tragedy since as long as Midgar was standing. And this... this is the first time these people have been able to take matters into their own hands and fix something. So, on behalf of the people of Edge and the World Regenesis Organization... Thank you. I have little more to offer than my thanks, but my friend Cait Sith here has brought you at least a small token."
Cait Sith set down the tablet and reached for a box, fumbling with the lid for a moment before pulling it off to reveal a handful of small badges, enough for each student in the class to have one.
"These badges are a symbol of the WRO," Reeve's voice continued. "Of what we try to stand for, as protectors and re-builders of what's left of a dying planet. And I would like all of you to take one with you. You might never set foot on Gaia again, but we'll be thankful for what you've done for as long as there are people to remember. I hope each and every one of you goes on, after today, to do great things wherever you go. If you make a mark in your future that's anything like the one you've made today, the multiverse stands to see great, great things. Thank you."
And with that, Cait Sith flicked off the tablet, and then wandered around the room, offering a badge to everyone present while Reno gave his hands a clap.
"And with that outta the way," he said, smirking. "Last day of class party. Pizza, Coke, hang out, talk about what you did here. You all earned it, yo."
Yeah, all of you.

Re: Party!
To tell the truth, she'd be sorry to leave the fledgling gardens behind and not be able to help take care of them any more, and she'd fret over how well the plants were doing. Don't think she wouldn't.
Re: Party!
Talk to the TAs!
Reno suspects one of them will be cranky with him today, but bah, it's the last class anyhow.
Re: Talk to the TAs!
The badge was kinda obnoxiously cute, and Reeve was damn hot (it was a total shame that he wasn't present in person) though, so Karina's day wasn't all terrible.
