Public Service - On the Edge, Monday, Period 2

"Okay, class," Reno said, talking today as he led his students through the portal on the Causeway, "part of the ruins have been called safe for the day, so I'm gonna take you on a little nature walk. You see, the plants that we saw growin' in Edge aren't the only ones to be found in the city. They're just the new ones. There's one place - and one place only - that's always had flowers growin' in it, even back before Edge, when Midgar was still standing."

The portal opened up and dropped the class off in the middle of the ruins, overlooking what was left of a church.

"I said it before, and I'll say it again - Don't step on the flowers."

Thank you for that, Reno.

"See, years back, when this place was still standin', a girl used to take care of these plants. They were miracle flowers even then, growin' in Midgar's dead soil. Turns out she was the last of a race we call the Ancients, so she had a connection with the planet that meant all she really had to do was, I dunno, ask nicely, and flowers would grow. Remember, Midgar was a two-tier city, so she was growin' these things in dead dirt, with polluted water and no view of the sun or sky. She died since, in order to save the planet. In the end, she's really the one who stopped the Meteor from killin' everyone, so this place is kinda... sacred, yo. That's why people ain't doin' anything with this."

There was a moment of silence, and then Reno gestured to a massive sword, easily as tall as any one of the people in the room, wedged into what would have been the pulpit, among the flowers, past a huge puddle of water.

"And that sword belonged to her dead boyfriend, who gave some amnesiac little shit the stupid idea that the kid was really him. Seemed to work out, anyway. The kid went on the save the world."

Cloud and Zack got afterthoughts, yeah. Reno never much liked either of them.

"I could keep talkin' about this place, about how the Ancient went about curin' plagues from here and all that. I figure I won't bore you for the rest of the class, yo. Poke around the ruins if you want, or the church. Don't touch anything that looks important or I'll have to kick your ass. Who knows, maybe if you sit and listen, you'll be able to, like, hear the Ancient singin' to her flowers or something."

You wouldn't, by the way. The one day Reno had decided to do this just so happened to be the one day Aerith was taking off to go to a convention for dead people back on the island with her dead boyfriend.

Anders believed he would have felt something holy about this place even without the lecture, and he listened quietly as he gazed upon the flowers. Reno's story seemed oddly familiar: The best people always ended up sacrificing themselves for some stupid reason or another.

A scrap of scripture ran through his head as he explored, carefully not stepping on anything but rocks and dirt. And she will know no fear of death, for the Maker shall be her beacon and her shield, her foundation and her sword.
