Technology and You- Monday- 1st period

Today the students would find themselves in an everyday sort of suburban neighborhood. With plenty of everyday sorts of cars behind them... if everyday sorts of cars had bumpers on them.

"This unit has been all about transportation and getting around in places that don't have rickshaws," Kitty said, and she sounded only a little stuffed up. "Because in case you haven't noticed, most places don't have rickshaws. Most places have cars. You drive them, you call or hail other people to drive cars for you, and it's the most common way to get from Point A to Point B in this time, in this country. And there are plenty of rules that go along with driving, way too many to cover in one class, but I'm gonna let you try it anyway."

In her defense, she'd planned this pre-cold, when she figured she'd be a better supervisor.

"Now come on over here, and I'll show you how to work the car," Kitty said, opening the door to one and getting in the driver's seat to demonstratrate. Once she'd gone over the basics of how to make the car go and turn and stop, and also what stop signs and stop lights were, she got back out and said, "You're all going to get in one of the cars and try it yourself. This is by no means a real driving course, so don't take it as one. In this class, if you get into what would be a minor accident or a fender bender, the bumpers mean there won't be any damage to you or the car. If you get into something more serious, the simulation will end, and you still won't get hurt. Any questions?"

Get in and mod your leisurely neighborhood drive that you totally can't get hurt in! And you can't run over anyone's pets!

Well, this was somewhere Nathan thought he'd never be. The tight, enclosed space was already getting to him but having to actually drive was making it worse.

He took a few deep breaths and pushed gently on the gas pedal. Very gently. He was moving slower than snails.

Celia had paid plenty of attention, but that didn't mean she didn't sit behind the wheel for a solid few minutes, just staring at the dashboard and all the little numbers and lights.

And once she got going, she was very proud of herself for only slamming on the brakes one time. With a bit more time, she'd probably be able to work the car from the inside out -- she didn't feel bad about her first try.

You'd think Cosette would take her time, thoroughly acquaint herself with the interior of the car, and go into the glove compartment and find the driver's manual and read that from cover to cover before she started the car but nope. She felt like she had a grasp on what Kitty had already told them, and was a little too excited to get into the car and go for a drive. Gigantic nerd she might be, but one whose enthusiasm occasionally overwhelmed her impulse control.

Besides, there were safety measures (which was probably the only reason her father wasn't having an inexplicable panic attack right now) so it wasn't like she had to worry about getting hurt.

And okay, she got a little too close to the curb once or twice and rubbed the tires, but mostly she did all right. Even if she didn't stop for three seconds at stop signs. Shh.

. . . and then when she finally pulled over to park (and bumped into the curb again) she really did pull out the car manual and read the whole thing.

Ichabod had been quite fascinated by the window button the first time he was in a car. Now he was quite excited to be able to try driving one himself. Following Kitty's instructions wasn't too hard, but then there were the minor details of speed limits, using rear-view mirrors and not driving on the wrong side of the road.

Who's around, if cold-laden!

Clint might have still been clueless about some boyfriend things, but helping sick girlfriends was pretty basic. ~~Also, his player had a cold too and wanted her own Clint to bring her warm things.~~ He came by during class with a large cup of tea and a muffin from the Perk, and watched the students work as he went over to Kitty. "How are the future drivers doing?"

"I haven't seen any crashes yet, so that's a good thing," she said, looking over at him. "Ooh, best boyfriend."

"I know," Clint said, giving her a careful kiss on the cheek. "I'd be the bad teacher encouraging them to bump into each other to see what happens."

"Freakouts, probably," Kitty said. "But if I thought most of them had ever been in the driver's seat of a car before I'd totally be encouraging that too."

There was a reason people tended to not like Kitty's Danger Room simulations at the mansion.

"They do look kind of... not modern," Clint said. "I never really thought about how weird this place must be for kids who don't know televisions and microwaves and all."

"Oh, they've learned those now," Kitty said. "I never really thought about it till I read about TV confusion on the radio once. So hopefully they're taking useful things away from this, even if it means I probably can't run this class twice in a row."

"Hey, you don't know who's going to show up next semester. I mean, odds are, they'll be from one of our worlds," because Clint paid attention to how that went, "but there might still be some confused 1800's folks."

There should so be more people from their worlds to confuse things.

"Probably. But I'd be betting that enough 1800's folks would show up to fill a class. I might wait and see if there's enough people for summer," she said. "Of course, a sane person might take the semester off..."

"Especially working two jobs," Clint said. "Does Xavier's have summer school? It doesn't seem like a place that ever shuts down."

"Depends on if the mansion's blown up or not," Kitty said honestly. It happened all the time. "Either way I'll still probably be needed over there, and I'd still be on the team."

"You work too much, you know that right?" Clint said, like he wasn't constantly training whenever he wasn't taking care of dogs. "That's probably why you're sick."

"Or I'm sick because it's November in Maryland and something's going around and also I spent a day in a dunk tank ~~or because my player had to take it out on someone and she was writing radio at the time of this decision~~," Kitty countered.

Clint sighed, and moved in closer, keeping just enough distance that Kitty's students wouldn't be able to say anything inappropriate was happening. "I guess. I just want to make sure you have time to relax and not be in danger." That second part was the really important one.

"I'm figuring out how to mesh things so I have time to relax, I promise," she said. "Besides, I have you to help with the relaxing part. When I'm not germy, anyway. And I haven't been in danger in weeks."

Unless you counted the countdown to the inevitable Kitty/Emma catfight.

"Oh, whole weeks without danger. It's an early Thanksgiving miracle," Clint said, before tilting his head in thought. "Hey, what are we doing for Thanksgiving?"

Look at him, thinking of a holiday more than two days in advance!

"No clue. What are we doing for Thanksgiving?" Kitty asked. "I think we've got options."

"We could make Barney cook for us and do the potluck at my building. Or we could go to Xavier's. I imagine some of the kids don't really have a place to go for the holidays." Kind of like here, he figured. "Or we can blow everyone off and do it here with you, me, and the dogs."

"If it's just us and the dogs, I'm not sure I'm good enough with the cooking thing to carry off a whole dinner," Kitty said. "I vote for bringing the dogs with us to Xavier's or your place."

"And we know I'm not good enough for the cooking," Clint said with a grin. "We can decide closer to the holiday, I guess? Who knows what might blow up between now and then, right?"

"If we were good and started talking about this now, this doesn't mean we're going to decide the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, right?" she checked, pausing for a sneeze.

"Maybe the Wednesday before that," Clint said, frowning softly. "Please tell me whatever you're doing after class involves a nap or something."

"The entirety of my plans today involve curling up on the couch and falling asleep in front of a bad movie," Kitty confirmed. "Also soup and a lot of DayQuil."

"Would you like some company for that? I've been told I make an excellent body pillow," Clint teased.

"You are an excellent body pillow. Are you sure? I don't want to get you sick, too," Kitty said.

"I think if you're going to get me sick, it's already happened." At least, that's how he figured the germ thing worked. "So we might as well just keep doing what we do."

"You're taking DayQuil, too, just in case. One of us needs to be capable of taking care of the dogs." Priorities. "But okay."
