Heroic Tales, Wednesday, Period Two

Once again, class was in the Danger Shop. This was because Thor needed a lot of snow for today's class, and the weather outside wasn't exactly adequate.

When the students arrived, they'd see a snow-filled landscape, barren except for a small grove of trees. They were looking at the setting of Adrift in the Hinterlands.

"Many times, when we think of a heroic tale, we think of a struggle and triumph against a wicked villain, but not all stories follow this formula. Sometimes nature itself is the 'villian', although it is an unthinking force that cannot act with malice. Still, it provides obstacles that the hero must overcome. Severe weather is one such obstacle. If you were trapped in this area with only a few basic supplies," a saw, some matches, and some rope, for example, of which there were enough for each student in the class, "how would you build yourself a shelter? There are enough trees to construct a small structure," and although it looked like there were only enough for one such shelter, since it was the Danger Shop, the trees would replenish if cut down, so there would be enough for everyone, "or you could build a shelter of snow and ice, which is quite warm if done correctly." He handed everyone a sheet of printed instructions for creating a basic cabin or igloo, and then demonstrated how to get started with both shelters. "Feel free to work by yourself or in groups to construct your shelters," he added, before letting them get to it.

Daphne wasn't a fan of snow unless she had a ski lodge to go with it, but she was in a good mood and willing to help people if they needed it.

It didn't take Daphne long to decide that she wanted to try something she had never done before. That would be why she was attempting to build an igloo.

It was a lot harder than it looked, apparently.

If you go to "More Options" before you post, it'll let you pick icons that way!

(Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] iceolatedqueen and [livejournal.com profile] never_dull for pointing this out to me on Twitter. *evangelizes*)

It's still really annoying, though.

Raven had absolutely zero problem with the cold, so while she was mimicking a simple lightweight sweater set, she looked perfectly content as she listened.

Raven was totally going for an igloo. Then she could save the trees for firewood.

Or just not have a fire. She'd be okay with that, too.

No, Cosette was going for a cabin, thank you very much. Being out in the cold in winter brought back more unpleasant recollections (probably worse for being a bit vague) than she was entirely comfortable with -- which, she belatedly realized, must have something to do with the way her father always went to lengths to make sure her room was well-heated in winter, and her cloaks were warm enough.

The cabin was likely going to be more difficult, and having never handled a saw before she was struggling a bit, but she'd rather not have to dig her hands into the snow very much so she'd just deal. Besides, it gave her something to focus on.

Thanks to Ghanima's class a few weeks ago, Four was well prepped in the art of making shelter in the freezing cold.

Yay for a modified igloo!

Was Johnny going to be a jackass and shun the actual activity in the name of showing off?

"FLAME ON!" he shouted. He burst into flames, melting the snow around him pretty quickly. "I'm just gonna hang out here for a little bit," he said as he went to sit down cross-legged.
