Public Service - On the Edge, Monday, Period 2

"So, I'm bettin' a few of you had pretty memorable weekends," Reno said, nodding at his students from the Fandom side of the portal. "I wish that meant I could just let you loose in a room full of goddamn puppies, but we got work to do, yo. See, I got this shipment of building supplies in for us, enough for both sites, and they're heavy as hell, between the pipes and the water tanks and the digging equipment, because yes, we're gonna have to dig if we wanna pull this off. Water lives underground, we can't filter it if we don't, yo."

Helpful, Reno. Your students probably had no clue where water lived.

"So, here's hopin' you dressed for some hard labor today, because that's totally what you're all in for. C'mon, yo."

And without any more preamble, he led his students through the portal.

"Well, one of us had to be and it wasn't me," she said. "But it's okay. She thinks that of all the friends I have, your name is the most normal."

You know. Compared to 'Flick' and 'Sparkle.'

"So see? Special."

"Hooray for me," Anders decided, smiling. "I'll have to write to the Circle apprentices and let them know their nicknaming skills are first-rate."

He was trying to be better about at least mentioning Anders wasn't a given name. It was surprisingly difficult to work into conversations.

"Nicknaming?"

Because, yeah. This was the first time Kathy'd heard that, too.

"Oh my gosh--have you befriended me under a false identity? I can't believe it." She was smiling a little more, though, so it was safe to say that she was not only not upset, but actively amused.

Good job, whatever-your-name-was.

Anders went pink but smiled back at her. "Not intentionally! But I haven't been called the other thing in about four years. So I introduce myself as Anders, and there never seems to be a right time to say, 'oh, by the way, I'm actually Hortense Throatwarbler the third.'"

He tugged on his ponytail and added, "It's not Hortense Throatwarbler the third, by the way. My parents didn't hate me quite that much."

"Too late," Kathy declared, lips twitching. "From now on, you will always be Hortense to me. I might give you Hortense Throatwarbler, Jr, but that's about it."

She knew your horrible secret now, Hortense.

Anders sighed heavily. "And now the terrible truth is out."

(It really wasn't Hortense.)

"Did Sarah have a good visit, though? Besides the glorious moments she spent with me."

(It was totally Hortense and no one could tell Kathy differently.)

"Sarah..." Kathy's smile faltered a bit. "She really liked meeting you and Flick. I think she had fun wandering around the castle, making snarky texts and tweets about our parents. But then she met a gremlin face to face and pretty much everything after that went downhill."

Fast. So fast. With a large and messy explosion at the end.

"She didn't get bit, though. I, uhh, kinda did instead."

As Anders had seen, not that Kathy knew that. As far as she'd known, she'd been at a concert in Seoul with thousands of screaming teenage fans.

"Oh!" Anders blinked rapidly. "That song you sang. Was that --because of the gremlin?"

At the time,he'd thought Kathy was just having fun exploring something different about herself. Knowing it wasn't something she'd wanted to do made him uneasy about having enjoyed it.

Helpfully he added, "You sounded good."

"Completely. I got bit right before I had to go on," Kathy muttered. "Though...I mean..."

Hey look. She was blushing. Surprise, surprise.

"It's not something I'd want to ever do in front of strangers and my parents. But, like, karaoke with friends? Maybe? If Elsa can sing about big butts and Barry can twerk, I could dance like that. But not where my parents could see."

"I can see where that wouldn't exactly be what they expected from their little girl," Anders answered, wincing. "Though you weren't as bad as Barry. Karl's eyes about popped out of his head at whatever that was."

"And," he added, with a sigh, "if the rest of you were making fools of yourselves singing, I'd come along too."

"I'm holding you to that," Kathy decided instantly. "In fact, that be exactly what I need to feel better about things. Some kind of karaoke night at Caritas."

And, honestly? Kathy might even have her first drink during it. And maybe more than one. For reasons.

"Who's Karl?" She'd missed that Anders had even had a visitor. Prepare for more apologies once she realized that she'd been so busy prattling about her weekend, she'd forgotten to ask about yours, Anders.

"Oh! Right!" Much as Kathy had forgotten to ask, Anders had forgotten to bring it up. "Karl was one of my best friends in the Circle, and he managed to run away and end up here for the weekend. It was fantastic to see him again. We were hoping he'd get to stay, but the island had other plans."

"Oh, I'm really sorry that he couldn't stay," Kathy said. "But at least he's still on the run, right? Does he know how he got here? And how the island sent him back?" That could be useful to know for Anders, who was always keeping one eye over his shoulder, just to make sure there wasn't a Templar there.

"He said he was just running and then suddenly he was on the island," Anders told her. "But I saw him get sent back. He said he wasn't feeling well, and then there was a portal that he felt like he had to go through."

He sighed at the memory. "Rapunzel says she got here the same way as he left, so maybe the portal put him where he's supposed to be. I want to believe she's right. But I already asked Barry to try to make a new portal to find him." Through which he hoped no Templars would come.

"If you need help going to find him, you know I'm there with you, right?" Kathy asked, assuming that if Barry was on it, it was as good as done. "Not even because I want to see your chapel."

Though if there was any time Kathy needed to prove to herself she was a hero, this week was it.

"If I have to go find him, I'm bringing half the bloody school," Anders said, with a little laugh. "But you'd probably be more help than most. Thank you."

"Oh, I dunno about that," Kathy said, pinking slightly. "I'm just fast and bouncy. I'm not even a trained fighter, just a gymnast. But I'll definitely do everything I can to help."

"Templars wear dresses and ridiculous suits of armor," Anders told her. "Be fast and bouncy'at them long enough,and you could knock them right over like toy soldiers."

"And now Hortense explains the real reason he wanted to take me to the fancy church," Kathy said. "So I could knock around some Templars while he laughed."

"No!" Anders insisted, managing to look serious for almost 30 seconds.

Then: "But ... it would be a pleasant side effect."
