"Okay Rookies," Reno said, hands in his pockets as he stood on the Causeway, where he'd ~~handwavily~~ told his students to meet. "I hope you all brought your armor with you, because today's that 'moment of truth' day, yo. We're gonna be headin' to Edge today, to check out the situation, pick a good place in the town itself for these water filtration units we're gonna be settin' up, that sort of thing. You'll all be happy to know that the radiation levels are nice an' low today, and there haven't been any monsters spotted in the area. But if I find out any of you took your armor off anyway, I'll kick your asses straight back to detention and you'll be writin' essays for me for the rest of the year that I probably ain't gonna read anyway."

This was Reno's way of telling his students that he cared.

"This is a class of ten, so I'd prefer if we decide to split up that you guys break it up half-and-half, but I don't wanna see you in groups of less than three if it really comes down to it, yo. Maybe I'll re-think that as the semester goes on and you guys prove you can handle yourselves out here, but for the time being, anyone who strays out of sight alone is joining the jackasses who took off their armor in detention."

Again, he was saying he loved you, guys.

"Now, c'mon, let's get going, or I'm going to just kill the whole class period lecturin' you on this side of the portal, yo."

And with that, he led his students through.

"Wore my suit today," Reno replied with a shrug of his shoulders. "The locals don't like that, yo."

Yeah, that totally cleared that one right up, didn't it?

"Should probably make a memo to the class next week not to dress like this. Not like most of you do, granted..."

"I don't think decaying city and suits go together during my wardrobe planning," Karina noted. "But I'll remember that anyway."

Because... yeah. Like hell she wanted looks like the ones he was getting.

Karina side-eyed him hard.

"Good plan, yo." He lifted his chin a little, considering Karina before changing the subject. She was a sharp one. "So, next week, we're hittin' up the other site I had in mind. The one full of sick and orphaned, yo. It's gonna be a tough one for a lot of people to stomach, and I want to make sure I got a TA at either site. If you got a preference, you might wanna talk to Kathy about where you wanna end up."

LOOK A DISTRACTION.

"I'll take the orphans," Karina said, taking the distraction FOR NOW, and glancing over at Kathy.

"Mostly because, like, I think they'll eat her alive. Or destroy her until there's nothing left but tears."

It wasn't that Karina felt nothing, of course, but she wasn't as... well. Kind? Gentle? Sensitive?

... All of the above?

Look, this was her way of trying to be nice and sparing Kathy some pain. God.

"I'll let you two arm-wrestle over it," Reno decided. "She's a soft touch, and goin' by the way she was feedin' the panhandlers around here today, she might have different ideas, yo."

Reno wasn't planning on sitting back with popcorn for that conversation, no, why did you ask?

"But you're right. She's a sensitive kid."

He didn't say that like it was necessarily a bad thing, but it would be hard to get anything done if she was being mobbed for food.

"Guess so," Karina said, shrugging a bit. She didn't think it was bad, exactly, but Karina and her feelings were seldom in the same room let alone being acknowledged so she was fully aware that her opinion in this was skewed.

"I can try to talk to her," Karina said doubtfully. "But if she starts crying, I'm just going to let the orphans eat her. I don't want them that bad."

Reno blinked, and then barked out a laugh at that.

"Well, they need their protein," he decided. "But she might get stuck in their teeth anyway. Doesn't matter where she ends up goin', I'll give her a talk about handouts. It's good to feed the hungry and all, but if we're puttin' all our time into playing soup kitchen, there won't be time for the project we're actually here to do."

"That's disgusting," Karina said, making a face. "I didn't mean it literally."

Because holy god, no.

"Besides," she said, glancing back at him. "Soup kitchens are great, but that won't sustain them when we're no longer here, right? The water filtration's more expensive up front, but it'll last longer and do more good in the long run."

"Right," Reno agreed with a nod. "If they have water, it's another step toward bein' able to feed themselves. There's that saying on Earth, what is it, about teaching someone to fish?"

As opposed to just handing him a can of tuna?
