Public Service - On the Edge, Monday, Period 2

"Okay Rookies," Reno said, hands in his pockets as he stood on the Causeway, where he'd handwavily told his students to meet. "I hope you all brought your armor with you, because today's that 'moment of truth' day, yo. We're gonna be headin' to Edge today, to check out the situation, pick a good place in the town itself for these water filtration units we're gonna be settin' up, that sort of thing. You'll all be happy to know that the radiation levels are nice an' low today, and there haven't been any monsters spotted in the area. But if I find out any of you took your armor off anyway, I'll kick your asses straight back to detention and you'll be writin' essays for me for the rest of the year that I probably ain't gonna read anyway."

This was Reno's way of telling his students that he cared.

"This is a class of ten, so I'd prefer if we decide to split up that you guys break it up half-and-half, but I don't wanna see you in groups of less than three if it really comes down to it, yo. Maybe I'll re-think that as the semester goes on and you guys prove you can handle yourselves out here, but for the time being, anyone who strays out of sight alone is joining the jackasses who took off their armor in detention."

Again, he was saying he loved you, guys.

"Now, c'mon, let's get going, or I'm going to just kill the whole class period lecturin' you on this side of the portal, yo."

And with that, he led his students through.

Kathy took her responsibility as TA very seriously--possibly more seriously than Reno did. Which was why she not only had her armor on, but she was also toting a dufflebag full to the brim with supplies: power bars, water bottles, Gatorade, dried fruit, trail mix, beef jerky, tissues, cheap sunglasses, extra hair ties, eleven thin scarves in case the air was bad, a couple of small towels, hand sanitizer, and even a few pairs of thick gardening gloves.

Hey, you never knew what you were going to run into! She wanted to be prepared.

Kathy wasn't the only one coming prepared! Minako tossed a grin at her friend as she bounced on her toes, a small knapsack on her back with a first-aid kit, granola bars, and some other small items. She'd even pulled her hair back completely, braiding it and pinning it up on her head like she did for festivals at home.

She held up a silent 'Victory!' sign and patted her armor. They were totally gonna do this!

Kathy returned it, feeling a little better at Minako's smile. She wasn't entirely sure she was ready to face Edge, so seeing someone in bright spirits helped.

"Were you a Scout at some point?" she asked because I think I'm hilarious.

"Eh?" Minako asked, stopping mid-bounce and staring at Kathy blankly. "A what?"

"A Girl Scout!" Kathy explained. "Or a Campfire Girl, I guess. There are a bunch of different groups out there."

She'd never gotten to be one, but the idea had always seemed so cool.

"They're these groups that take girls out camping and teach them all sorts of cool skills about being prepared and stuff. And they sell cookies for fundraising, which are supposed to be very good."

Again, not something she'd ever experienced, but the whole internet went insane over Samoas and Thin Mints, so there had to be something to them!

"Oh, the Girl Guides! No, I never joined, but our schools always stress being prepared and doing service work, you know? And every family has an emergency kit for if we have to go to a bomb shelter," Minako replied. "Even if it's just to make your grandma feel safer."
