Today's junk food is an assortment of candy, chips, dip and soda.

"Ancient Greek music had a lot of drums and wailing. It's actually a lot like music from the Colonies, but only 2000 years earlier and without the space stuff. But see, Ancient Greece was a lot like the Colonies, because there's a bunch of different people all stuck in the one area. They have their own different cultures and stuff, but they all have to interact with each other, so eventually they get this big, totally excellent area culture music thing with the drums and the wailing.

This is kinda proof that music of the same kind can develop in two totally different places as long as the ways of living are kind of the same."

Homework: "Find a sea shanty/song and bring it to class next week. Dressing like a pirate or sailor is optional, but totally encouraged."

If you were from Ancient Greece and you had your own tribe of warriors, what kind of music would you use to identify your tribe? Kind of your own tribal theme song. And why?

"Something loud with deep bass drum beats," John says. "I want the other people to know I'm coming by the beat of the drums and the almost Gregorian chanting of the tribesman. Let them know I'm coming and give them the decision to stay in my path or flee."

"Angry punk rock. Well, not actually angry punk rock. They didn't have amps back then. Weren't the war-songs, the paeans, sort of like really booming scary prayers to the gods?"

"Probably!"

"Well, nothing says 'ancient warrior culture' like 'our invisible sky fairy will smush you.'"

"Some kind of dance music with a good funky rhythm," Marty said. "Because my tribe? It's gotta dance."

"Something like Death Metal. Something loud, scary and threatening."

"I would have my tribal song be something soft and deceptively sweet. Lull our enemy into a false sense of security, and then we'd swoop in and kick their asses."

"I guess I'd use something really uptempo and poppy, like early Madonna," Angela suggested. "Make them underestimate us."

"You think I could get drums to sound twangy? I figure if I'm gonna have my own tribe, I can make them play country songs on their drums. It'd be real easy to tell who we were, right?"

"Totally dude. And you can kinda do that if you mess with the snare."

"Something loud and kind of creepy to scare off the other tribes."

"Something totally bouncy and energetic, dude. Let the other dudes know we're nice guys, but we're not gonna back down easy if we're forced into a fight."

Talk to Ted, dudes.

Boone puts on Ted's desk his report on music from Lucas's time. The report's a little shmoopy, and, apparantly, within its double-spaced pages a record store is a metaphor for life, the universe, and everything.

Ted gives Boone a B+ for the report.

Zero brought her guitar to class. "Okay, so, um, I interviewed the ninja at The Fourth Sin--um, Miho. Apparently her people like classic country and western, I don't know. And Callisto..." she nudged at her partner.

"Uh, I interviewed Seamus Harper, who's apparently from the future," Callisto said. "And apart from early Twentieth century dance, they also like anthems."

"So we proudly present the Highguard Anthem, as in the style of Merle Haggard." Zero strummed her guitar. Twangily.

Callisto started singing.

Heaven burns, the stars are falling
As the enemy draws nigh.

Sound the call, fleet and lancers,
"Commonwealth" our battle cry.

Zero strummed on as she sang.

Face the foe, never waver,
Summon fire from the sky.

From a million sovereign planets
Scattered through the endless night.

Bound by blood and High Guard honor,
Hold the line until the light.

Hold the line against the night.

Hold the line against the night, Zero repeated before finishing with a little flourish.

Ted applauded. "Good work, dudettes!"
