Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

Were you a veteran Fandom resident? Did you finish getting your brain broken by your sibling and/or buddy? Did you just want to sit down to recover from the shuttle ride? If so, then there were plenty of tables and chairs set up across the lawn just waiting to be filled!

[This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Jesus fucking Christ this girl's wrist was worth more than all of the food he had eaten in his life. But she wasn't, like, looking down her nose at him or calling him names, so the disgustingly filthy rich girl was probably okay, maybe.

"Yeah, it's hard to coordinate with pink. Especially the blue like that. You'd have to dress neutral rather than accessorizing that way, that makes all the difference."

He was pretty sure dressing to match the watch would be way less expensive, though.

...But then she wouldn't have had two watches! Keep up Sparkle!

"Well, I wear a lot of pink, so it's not as hard to coordinate as one might think, but, yeah, not exclusively." Which was why she'd gotten this one in black. "I have other watches at home, but I didn't have a chance to pack before getting shipped off here, so I was able to convince my mom to let me get these instead."

She gave Sparkle a conspiratorial smile. "The trick was to buy the pink one first and then point out that I couldn't wear it with everything."

Sparkle was taking mental notes, here. Like, 'how to unabashedly act like a spoiled rich kid' for 100, Bob.

Who knows? Maybe it could come in useful someday. Of course, his takeaway so far was 'Mom didn't want her around for some reason,' so... Maybe not.

"Well, you have to be careful what pinks you're matching with what pinks," Sparkle reasoned. "It's not like bubblegum goes well with neon. But they all look good with black."

Basic colour theory, aw yeah.

The reason was crazy, Sparkle. Wasn't that why they were all here?

"Truth," Evie said, then held out her hand. Not so he could admire the watch again, but to shake. "Hi. I'm Evie Greene, new kid from Sterling, Louisiana. And you?"

Well, she wasn't acting weird about touching a member of the proletariat class, so that was a point in her favour, at least. Sparkle grinned a little and gave her hand a firm shake.

"Sparkle. Old kid from Toronto, Ontario. So, you know, from that other weird place that sometimes speaks French that would make a Parisian curl up and die crying. Especially since there's Acadian smeared all over my Quebecois."

He blamed Lewis.

He was also barreling onward because that was usually a good way to get people to not accuse him of either making up his crazy name, or lying about it. He lied about lots of things! But he only lied about his name on fake I.D.s.

"So, what part of the brochure got you shoved here? The unparalleled curriculum? The weather? All the smiling faces? They didn't have to hire models to pose like that, you know? Like, the student body actually looks like that."

"I take it the faculty hands out the good drugs on picture day," Evie muttered sourly. "Or is that how they can let everyone wander around so freely? If we're all blissed out on meds, they probably don't have to worry about what we're up to."

Sparkle actually gave her a weird look for that one. Yeah, it was kind of difficult to not follow the context of a statement like that around in a circle to its logical conclusion.

"Preeetty sure it's the faculty that's on the good drugs, for the most part. I've heard stories about Pam and Cheryl's class, I mean." He shrugged. "It's just a fucked-up boarding school. I'm pretty sure I'd be doing way less self-medicating if they gave out little doses of pills with our cafeteria slop."

"Pam and Cheryl?" Evie looked at her schedule. "I'm in their class on Friday. What do you know about them?"

"They're like a pair of escapees off the crazy train," Sparkle replied with a roll of his eyes toward the sky. "Heard at one point about one of them like eating cocaine from a bag, during class, like it was a freaking feed trough. The other one has a pet ocelot that likes mauling people."

The awesome thing was, Sparkle didn't even have to exaggerate or make shift up when talking about those two.

Because it was completely unbelievable and the look that Evie was giving him said as much.

"Right. Because that wouldn't have led to arrests or heart attacks or anything," she snorted. "Just...cocaine out of a bag. During class."

Because a school for troubled teens would just hire anyone off the street who sent in an application.

"Around here? Anarchy is more the name of the game, I think. The town has a mayor, but I don't think he actually gives a shit. I've never once seen one of the troopers doing their job. Hell, one of the bars here doesn't card, and I'm pretty sure the other only does so that the adults don't have to deal with the high school kids."

Sparkle was helping!

"You know I don't believe a word you're saying, right?" Evie asked, laughing. "Look, back at my last school, I shut down the sale of 'elevator passes' to the freshmen at our one-story school. I know when I'm getting messed with, okay?"

"Oh yeah?" Sparkle just grinned. "You got a free night sometime soon? I can take you to the bar myself, let you see first-hand just how screwed up some of this island is."

He was too kind, really.

"Sure," Evie said, figuring it was a juice bar or something where 'Sparkle' would be able to win on a technicality. "You name an evening and we'll go out and hit the bars. Maybe score some coke or whatever on the way and eat it in front of teachers."

Suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuure.

"Ugh, no, you don't eat it unless you're an insane bitch like one of those two," Sparkle replied. "But if you're into that sort of thing, I can get some pot for that evening, easy."

And sure, he'd smoke it in front of the teachers. What were they going to do? Suspend him?

"Isn't this the wrong kind of place to go around pointing fingers at the crazy people?" Evie challenged. "And, wait--they don't do drug tests here?"

The CLC had, every week like clockwork. Evie had no idea what they expected to find, considering the drug cocktails swimming in everyone's system and the strict rules about contact with the outside world.

Also, she didn't smoke anything, but that could be her excuse later.

"Nope," Sparkle replied with a shrug of his shoulders. "Not since I showed up, anyway. Should they be?"

Yeah, she was definitely here thinking this was the kind of institution that only let people out on a day pass. Poor girl. Fandom probably wasn't going to help with that.

No. No it was not. Fandom was going to mess with her but good.

Sparkles' question caught her off-guard. "With as much freedom as they give us, I would think so?" she said. "I wouldn't be surprised if that was why a bunch of people were sent here, you know?"

Kids with drug problems being sent to a 'boarding school' was a time-honored tradition among the well-off!

"I was sent here for fighting with my peers," Sparkle noted, shrugging his shoulders dismissively, "sure. But some people came here because they thought it looked like a good school. Some just have nowhere else to go."

He drummed his finger against his hip, and then stooped down to pick up the little black cat who was prowling the grass around his feet. Velcro clung fast to his shoulder.

"Most people are surprised by what they find here. It's not gonna be what you're expecting at all."

"Oh, it already isn't," Evie assured him.

Not enough rules, enough nurses, enough walls.

"But I'm only going to be here for a few months," she assured him. "Then I'll be back home in Sterling for good."

Suuuuure.

"They all say that," Sparkle noted, grinning at her almost sharply. "Hope for your sake that you're right, Evie. In the meantime, if you need someone to scream at when you realize just how fucked up this place is, I'm pretty easy to find."
