Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

Were you a veteran Fandom resident? Did you finish getting your brain broken by your sibling and/or buddy? Did you just want to sit down to recover from the shuttle ride? If so, then there were plenty of tables and chairs set up across the lawn just waiting to be filled!

[This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Kathy shrugged. "Well, the evil carnival thing was less fun than expected and then I got front row seats to watch a friend of mine loose his Froot Loops because of a gremlin-experiment gone horribly wrong, but other than that, I guess things have been pretty okay. You?"

She paused, remembering what she'd read in the notes over the radio that morning she'd been kidnapped by the squirrels. "I heard that you had a rough time at home a few weeks ago," she offered. "But I don't want to pry, so if you want me to butt out, I totally can."

"No, actually, I've been meaning to thank you for what you said on the radio--or what you didn't say, I mean," Kira said. "It's been a weird few weeks and I forgot that the squirrels get into everything. Like, can't they tell when we're having a crisis and go away?"

"I'm pretty sure they spot crises and that only encourages them," Kathy said with a frown. "But, yeah, no problem. I didn't think that stuff needed to be shared with anyone who didn't hear it directly from you."

Granted, Kathy did have an idea of what was happening, since she'd been the one reading the notes, but she could pretend she had no clue if it would make Kira feel better.

"Though, umm, if you ever wanted to talk about stuff like that, I'm here," she added. "I had an interesting summer of new developments myself." She looked down her shirt and grimaced. "And no, I don't mean in my bra."

Sadly.

"Your whole bra area is fine," Kira assured her, smiling softly. "Do your developments involve your mom being a lying liar who lies? Because that's where I am right now." No, her dad wasn't getting included in this yet, so that was one plus.

"Nooo, I don't think so," Kathy said, giving Kira a grateful smile. It was nice to have friends who reassured you that way. "Ummm, unless they do and they're really good at hiding it? Mine was more an unexpected Y-People thing, not a family trait."

She bit her lip. "Was the note right, then? Did you find out you were, umm, genetically predisposed to being...tricky?"

Was that a good way of dancing around it?

That got a laugh out of Kira, and it felt surprisingly good to be laughing about it. "I think that's the best way I've heard it put so far," she said. "It's actually... I'm genetically predisposed to being a kitsune. It's not like--I don't turn into a fox or anything, and I'm not sure if or how I'm going to change at all. But my mom knew it might happen and she didn't tell me and it sucks."

"I'm sorry she didn't tell you," Kathy said, offering a tentative hug if Kira wanted one. "I can't imagine how she could think she could let that slide and not, y'know, tell you. Did she explain anything? Once you talked to her, I mean?" She shrugged a little. "I don't know anything about kitsune outside of myths--and even most of what I do know is about the kumiho. I'm not sure how much of that transfers over to real life."

Kira was all about that hug, in no small part because she'd been worried--totally irrationally, she knew--that her friends wouldn't want to deal with her dealing with this. "I got some explanation, but I don't know if she told me everything," she said. "When I was a kid, I thought I was really healthy because I never got sick when my friends did, but apparently that's a kitsune thing. My reflexes are faster now and the other day, I ran up all the stairs in the dorm and it wasn't even a problem. It's all good things, but it's weird and new and I'm still trying to wrap my brain around it. What happened to you? Did the carnival do something?" Stupid, evil carnival!

"If you ever need someone to talk to about randomly developing powers, my door is always open," Kathy offered shyly. "I mean, I haven't even told my parents. I don't think we have a secret bloodline to find out about, which means they'll just think it's weird."

Her father would freak and her mother would wail and they would both forbid her from using her powers ever.

"As for the carnival, well, it wasn't so bad until the end." She nervously fiddled with a lock of her hair. "Have I ever told you about the hot guy I tried to murder?"

"I think I remember a little about him. Super hot older guy? And he works in town?" Hopefully, he'd forgiven the near-murder part.

"That's him," Kathy said, nodding. "I've met him a few other times. Most recently at the carnival. He, umm, had to hug me to break the spell. And before he did, I, uhh...tried to seduce him again. And bring him into the carnival, which would have involved kinda killing him again."

"Ooh, awkward," Kira said sympathetically. "But he probably wouldn't have hugged you if he thought you'd really kill him. Is he a good hugger? 'Cause attractive people who give good hugs are kind of amazing."

"He's a good hugger," Kathy admitted glumly. "And a good kisser. Too bad he's like, double my age and thinks I'm an idiot."

She couldn't explain about Nick being Gorgon and their history there, but that only added to the awkwardness.

"I bet he doesn't think you're an idiot," Kira insisted. "If he lives here too, he has to know how weird this place is, and if he can't understand that sometimes people here end up doing stuff they never would otherwise, then his hotness and kissing don't make up for that."

That made Kathy feel a little better, yeah. "He did say somehting like that," she admitted. "But, still. Why can't the island make me act like a psycho in front of, like, anyone else? I mean, not that I'd ever have a shot with Nick even if the island wasn't involved..."

He was so much older and so much cooler and so much hotter than she was. What was even the point of worrying about it?

"I guess he's just like the hot teacher you want to impress even though you know he's probably, like, married with a mortgage or something. It's so stupid. I'm sorry, Kira, we were talking about your problems and then I just bulldozed in with mine."

"No no, please keep distracting me with talk of hot older men," Kira said. "I'm totally okay with this, I promise. And I know how you feel there, because Mr. Hale--Derek? Totally hot, and totally dating a guy. It's kind of tragic." Lucky, lucky Stiles. "But maybe now that you and Nick have like, a load of weirdness between you, you can at least have conversations with him? It'll be like prepping yourself for slightly younger hot guys in the future. And it's here, where your parents will never know!"

"Some Saturday, we'll have to go to the hotel and have lunch there or something," Kathy said. "And pretend that we're there for a reason that totally has nothing to do with you getting to check him out."

Maybe they could get several girls together? Maybe Kathy was less likely to stand out in a crowd.

"We should work on having more crushes on guys our own age. Everyone here is hot and we even have newbies to pick from." She looked around the lawn. "Like, Anders. He's cute and funny and a good kisser. He definitely tops my list of age-appropriate crushes. You?"

"You've kissed Anders?! Lucky!" Kira said, thinking about it for a moment. "I don't know that I have any big crushes yet. I feel awkward crushing on guys I don't know very well, and I don't know most of the guys so... I'm weird, aren't I?"

Kathy was now bright red and giving serious thought to hiding under a table. "Yeah," she said, trying not to smile, even as her face got hot enough to cook food on. "We watched movies together one day and then kissing happened and he's really, really good. Five-star reviews on Yelp, would kiss again good."

And now she was going to look around and make sure no one else was close enough to hear their conversation.

"And you're not weird! That's totally fine, not crushing on guys till you know them! I think I'm weird, for like having a week-long crush on Four just because he has a lot of tattoos and was fun to fight with."
