Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

Were you a veteran Fandom resident? Did you finish getting your brain broken by your sibling and/or buddy? Did you just want to sit down to recover from the shuttle ride? If so, then there were plenty of tables and chairs set up across the lawn just waiting to be filled!

[This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"Yeah, I'm with the Sheriff's department," Tamsin said, giving the girl a brief glance. "Why?"

"I'm gonna be a Hawk when I get out of here - soon as I'm of age," Kaylin said with a smile. "They say it's like your police things."

"Oh, and the black eye and bruises? Training. Not from a bar fight or anything. Just so you know." Not this time anyway.

"I wasn't going to ask," Tamsin said dryly. "Unless you filed charges, and then I'd have to care."

She tilted her head. "So what do Hawks do, then?"

She was vaguely interested. For now.

"We're one of the three Hall of Law," Kaylin explained, and yes, she said 'we' because she was practically one anyway, wasn't she? "We're the ones who respond to problems and investigate crimes."

"Yeah, that sounds like detective work. Police work. Both," Tamsin said, rolling her eyes a little. "Okay, so do you have questions or whatever? I'm gonna be standing here anyway."

Ugh, kids.

She reminded Kaylin a little of Teela, but really eye-rolling wasn't enough to deter Kaylin. The Hawks teased her unmercifully, but when she wanted something she was fairly unstoppable.

"Do they make you learn all sorts of stupid stuff about history and cultural interactions and basic magic and math and whatever to be a Police here?"

Say no, Tamsin. You'll make her day.

Considering that Tamsin had been a 'cop' for the Dark Fae since... before guidelines were stricter? "Well, not basic magic," she said. "I think there's a guide for dealing with people in an ethical way or something."

"See? And you do just fine, don't you?" Kaylin asked. "I mean, it's not like I haven't memorized all the laws and everything, but do I really need to know when each battle of the Barrani/Dragon war happened?"

"Not unless one of these dragons is likely to pop up during the course of your investigation," Tamsin replied.

"Well... sometimes they do, but mostly you should just shut up around them - at least if you're me - 'cause they're really easily offended," Kaylin said. "But even then, it's not like they ever asked me about history while I was trying to solve a crime or something."

"Wait, so back up," Tamsin said, giving her the seriously? look. "You've got a species of incredibly touchy dragons and they were in a war the one time, but you don't think that's potentially relevant information?"

She snorted. "What if one of them carries a grudge and kills some guy? Or a conspiracy theorist decides to start murdering people because he thinks these dragons weren't fair on his own people?"

Kaylin couldn't help it. She giggled. And covered her mouth quickly, but couldn't stop the giggle from turning into a full blown laugh. She kept waving at the woman helplessly as she tried to get herself under control.

"I'm sorry, I'm sorry," she said finally, between bursts of laughter. "I forget none of you are from home. If a Dragon decides to kill someone you just get Out Of The Way. In case they decide to eat you, too. And if the Barrani decide to take on the Dragons we'll just try and evacuate the city as fast as we can so we don't all end up as collateral. They're both immortal, you know."

She wiped at her eyes. "The Dragons won the war and now the Dragon Emperor rules everything in Elantra. Except the Barrani High Halls. And nobody crosses the Emperor. Not if they don't want to be eaten. The Dragons police themselves - not that they need policing. Most people never even see them. Which, is honestly pretty good for most people. I wish I never saw any of them."

Tamsin's eyeroll was out in full force.

"If this is your idea of trolling the police," she said, "then get out of my sight before I decide to kick your ass and hang you off the flagpost by your underwear."

"I don't know what trolling is," Kaylin admitted and couldn't help her smile. "But Gods do you remind me of my friend, Teela."

Made her feel a little less homesick, honestly.

"Well, I hope Teela kicked your ass like it seems to need kicking," Tamsin said dryly. "I'm not allowed to do it because you're a student, but don't think I'm not tempted."

"Oh believe me, she does," Kaylin said. "Regularly."

She pointed to the black eyes. "That was from her during yesterday's training. Sergeant got me on the cheekbone with his staff. I'm just lucky he didn't break it."

"And yet you still complain and make fun of your elders when they don't put up with your vague whining," Tamsin said. She gave that a slow-clap.

"Advice from me? Anything that might actually pop up in the middle of an investigation is worth pursuing. Background knowledge included."

"And now you sound like Marcus," Kaylin said a bit glumly. Still, she adored Marcus - and his wives, whom she hadn't had time to see this week - so she nodded. "So I guess I get to keep studying."
