Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

Were you a veteran Fandom resident? Did you finish getting your brain broken by your sibling and/or buddy? Did you just want to sit down to recover from the shuttle ride? If so, then there were plenty of tables and chairs set up across the lawn just waiting to be filled!

[This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

And here was Hannibal, handing her a sandwich. "Did your home not feed you, or have you forgotten again?"

"I ate!" Kaylin protested. "Sometimes. But training takes a lot out of you. And the training sergeant seemed particularly sadistic this week. He seemed to think I should catch up on all the bruises I should have gotten over the summer, all in one week."

Another week or so and the black eye and huge bruise over her left cheek should have faded.

Hannibal nodded; she hadn't seemed worried about the bruises, but he had wondered. "You can't heal yourself, then?"

"I don't think so," she said thoughtfully. "What would be the point, anyway? It's not like they won't heal quickly enough."

Healing was for other people, Hannibal!

"If you're in pain and can spare yourself, wouldn't you want to?" Hannibal countered. He would; then again, he wouldn't judge if she said no. Some people were like that.

"I suppose," she said slowly. "I just never really thought about healing myself. I don't know if I even could. How would I look inside myself and compare it to what's different?"

"You should know your own body better than any," Hannibal pointed out. "You know how you're supposed to feel, and how you do. Start with one thing," he waved at her cheek, "compare that, and try."

Kaylin hesitated, then pulled up her left sleeve and pushed the gems in the correct order to remove the golden bracer. It was possible he'd catch a glimpse of the rune markings she tried so hard to hide before she rolled her sleeve back down. She handed the bracer to him, then gestured for him to follow her to a more out of the way place where she sat - sometimes she collapsed when she was trying to heal and she'd rather already be on the ground.

She closed her eyes, focused, and placed her hand upon her cheek.

And squinched her eyes shut tighter and focused even harder.

In her mind she tried to remember what she did when she was healing someone else, but part of the problem was that she didn't know what she did, it just sort of seemed to happen. She gave it a few more moments, even peeking an eye open to see if her markings were glowing, though she knew she'd feel them if they were.

Finally, she opened her eyes and stood up with a sigh. "I don't think I can."

Hannibal did catch that glimpse, yes. And was also rather fascinated with the bracer, and with her...well, her lack of power, in this case.

He handed the bracer back. "Depending upon how your ability works, it might not be possible. But you never know if you don't try." He grinned. "Another case for learning."

Stupid bracer. Kaylin shoved her sleeve back up and closed the bracer around it.

"No one seems to know how it works," she admitted. "But I guess it was worth a try. Might have been nice if it worked, huh?"

"It would," Hannibal agreed. "Have you tried asking some of the other magic-users here?"

"Of course not!" Kaylin said. "No one's even supposed to know I can do magic. I only told you because I was tired and I had to explain things so I wasn't in more trouble!"

"Do you think it likely anybody here will let on to anybody in your world?" Hannibal asked. "At home you have no-one to teach you; here you have a chance at that. Why not take it?"

She chewed on her lower lip, considering. "Maybe. I'll have to think about it."

More studying? Sigh.

"And there are people who could teach me back home. Maybe. But healing power is very rare and all healers are kept solely by the Dragon Emperor for his use and well... we know what would happen if I had to spend time around the Emperor."

"Unpleasant things," Hannibal agreed. "I know of at least two healers here - Karla and Raven. And I know from the radio that there are other students that use magic. It might or might not be of any help to you, but," he reiterated, "you won't know until you try."

"Karla... is she teaching a course? Because I'm taking one with someone who has that name," Kaylin said.

"She is," Hannibal answered. "She's my 'teaching buddy' and a good friend. She is also a Healer, as well as having other talents."

"Then maybe..."

This was hard. Everything in her told her not to tell anyone - to keep it secret. But maybe here, where no one knew anything. Maybe it was safe.

"I could try."

"That's all anybody can ask," Hannibal said. Yeah, he wasn't Yoda.

Good because Kaylin wouldn't have known what to do with Yoda and she'd have felt inclined to argue the whole 'there is no try' business, because really?

"Maybe I can talk to her after my class with her. If she -" no, no, she wasn't going to say 'if she doesn't seem too scary' because that would just be ridiculous - and way too revealing. "If she... isn't too busy."

It was also fairly obvious; sorry, Kaylin. "I suppose you'll have to see. Just remember - you've fallen asleep in my class and survived. You can handle speaking with Karla."

Even if she probably didn't know what an accomplishment that first part was!

Everyone back home agreed Kaylin was a terrible liar because her face and body showed everything, seems like nothing had changed here. Though she did smile at his reminder.

"Yeah, you let me live, didn't you?" she said. "Even fed me."

"I did," Hannibal agreed. Although she probably wouldn't want to let Karla do that, at least with food she'd made herself. "And I've a feeling Karla will be inclined toward understanding if you let her know you may occasionally be needed back home."

She nodded. "I will be sure to let her know."
