Hacking 101; Monday; Period 2

Class was in the computer lab today but there were no lectures prepared or programs booted up on the computers in front of the students. He wasn't going to be the guy that made everyone work after something like that a murderous carnival.

"So hey," he said easily, smiling at everyone. "Pretty tough weekend. I spent most of it in the library so I have no lesson plan for today. But, I know we need a class so we're still here in the computer lab and I've made sure there's a nice selection of games on these computers. Puzzles, board, adventure, action -- "

And absolutely nothing carnival related, thank you.

" -- for you guys to pick from. I know typically these kind of classes would involve a movie but eh, I wanted to be a little different and at least keep you on computers. If you'd rather, you can practice what we've already learned but take it easy and take care of yourselves, okay?"

With that, he let them get to work or get to playing.

Eleanor was exhausted, and had the sort of red eyes that implied she hadn't gotten much sleep.

She poked listlessly at the list of games, allowing her attention to be distracted by one wherein you twisted shapes around to make matches (http://www.popcap.com/games/bejeweled-twist/online).

If you did very well, you got bonus shapes; if you did very well at those, you got an extra bonus where all the shapes became fruit and did a happy little dance.

It was cute, even given her current mood. Moreover, it didn't require any thought.

Joker sat down next to Eleanor. "So..." he began, tentatively, "I hear you had a pretty rough weekend. You hanging in there?"

He should have been here for her. He wouldn't have been able to do anything, if he had been here, but he still felt horrible that he hadn't been.

Eleanor looked at Joker as if, for a half-second, she didn't quite recognize him. Or maybe she just wasn't sure how to react.

"I suppose you're right," she said, shrugging her shoulders. "I ought to have gone with you. How's Hil?"

"She's good," Joker answered. "My dad's good. The new house is good. I had a good time. Now that we've gotten all that out of the way, let's go back to the important part: you made it through in one piece. Let's start by chalking that up as a win. Other good points: I'm here, now, so if you need someone to talk to, or, you know, just hang around with, or possibly to hold and be held by, I've got that covered. Does that help any?"

Eleanor had that same flat look on her face. "I'm fine," she said, tonelessly. "It was a difficult weekend, but it's over. None of that was real. It doesn't do to dwell on the past, particularly things that were only shadows to begin with."

Yesterday, she had clung to Elsa and sobbed, but her armor seemed mostly intact this morning.

"How much have you heard?"

"Just what was on the radio, but there was a lot there, and none of it was good. Some of the details about what happened before the carnival got you... Shadows or not, you went through some fucked-up shit."

He shrugged. "Or, you can stick with the 'I'm fine' bullshit. Say it enough times, and you'll start to feel bad that you don't believe it."

"I've learned my future," she said. "I suppose, though, if the carnival was evil, it was a lie. And I got to see Mother and Father again, so that was pleasant. Was that what made radio?"

She lifted her shoulders, listlessly. "I don't -- I'm not very good at this. I did a great deal of crying when I first returned to myself, and last night, in my room, but I can't ... switch it on again simply because you weren't here for it. I'm just tired, and empty."

"Yeah, that's some of it," Joker told her. "So... there's no way that's not majorly fucked up." He gave her a shrug "I'm not asking you to turn it back on again for me," Joker told her. "'Cause that would be super fucking twisted. I'm just saying... if you have more you need to let out, I'm here. If you want to talk about it, I'm here. And if you don't... well, I'm still here. We could watch a movie or something to try to take your mind off it. It's just... you don't have to wall it all up, and you don't have to do it alone."

Okay, this was class, so she couldn't actually wriggle over next to him and cuddle or anything. Tempting though that may be.

She did, in fact, reach her hand over, tentatively, near him. If he wanted to take it -- that would be very nice, indeed.

Yeah, he did want take it. He squeezed her hand affectionately, and tugged to try to get her to come closer. Their assignment for today was to dick off all class; taking a break from that didn't exactly feel like something Professor Riley would mind.

All right, that was invitation enough. Eleanor was going to lean over and rest her head on his shoulder, hoping it wasn't too much weight.

"Are you busy, after this?" she asked, softly. "I might like -- I don't think I want to talk about it." Not yet. "But I might like to sit and not talk."

Not too much weight at all. Joker gave her hand another squeeze. "Conveniently enough, I've got plenty of free time after class. As much as you need."
