Hacking 101; Monday; Period 2

Class was in the computer lab today but there were no lectures prepared or programs booted up on the computers in front of the students. He wasn't going to be the guy that made everyone work after something like that a murderous carnival.

"So hey," he said easily, smiling at everyone. "Pretty tough weekend. I spent most of it in the library so I have no lesson plan for today. But, I know we need a class so we're still here in the computer lab and I've made sure there's a nice selection of games on these computers. Puzzles, board, adventure, action -- "

And absolutely nothing carnival related, thank you.

" -- for you guys to pick from. I know typically these kind of classes would involve a movie but eh, I wanted to be a little different and at least keep you on computers. If you'd rather, you can practice what we've already learned but take it easy and take care of yourselves, okay?"

With that, he let them get to work or get to playing.

This class was pretty much exactly Kathy's speed. It had been all she could do to haul herself out of bed as it was.

Normally, she'd go for the most aggressively happy game she could, but the rainbows made her think of her uniform which made her think of Gorgon which was just a hard no all over.

So it was the game about the luchador bison in the land of the gummi bears. Well, the sequel.

"Hey... you making out okay?" Joker asked her. "I spent the weekend back home being a big brother; right now, I can be a little one."

He frowned. "That... came out weird. I just meant, if you want to talk or whatever, I'm here. But not in a creepy stalker way."

Kathy gave him a wobbly smile. "I knew what you meant," she said. "And it was a much nicer way of saying that than my real little sister would. Way less teasing me about...everything."

She fiddled with the end of her braid and sighed. "I'm not even sure what to say. I mean, I was assaulted, attacked by a teddy bear, murdered, and then I spent the rest of the weekend trying to seduce people as a contortionist."

Not just 'people' but a specific person. But Kathy wasn't ready to admit that.

"So... weird and creepy, even by Fandom standards," Joker replied. "Yeah, this is not the time to be teasing you about everything. And no lewd remarks about seductive contortionists, either." Well, not out loud. He hated himself for it, but it was hard not to think about. "You're in one piece today -- un-murdered, no teddy bears -- so there's that, at least. This place has thrown some pretty fucked-up crap our way."

It was probably for the best that he hadn't seen her then. Though Nick had probably seen enough of her spangled crotch for everyone else on the island.

"Thanks," she said, trying to work up the energy for another smile and failing. "I may be in one piece today, but I'm still not at a hundred percent."

She felt at about fifteen percent, tops.

"Hey, Joker? Can I ask you kind of an embarrassing question?"

"Absolutely. I excel at answering embarrassing questions. And I think 'not a hundred percent' is one hell of an understatement."

So much of an understatement that it bordered on a lie, really.

"Do you think it means anything, when the island makes you do stuff? Not just, like, the murder and the crazy and the drug-dealing--" to name a few, totally hypothetical actions the island could make you take, honest "--but, like, if you specifically target someone? Multiple times? Do you think that means anything?"

Joker raised an eyebrow. "Well... do you want it to mean anything? I mean, the way you asked the question... I'm gonna go way out on a limb here and say that it sounds like sexy contortionist you seduced and murdered someone that you have a crush on, that you're not admitting you have a crush on, and that you're trying to ask me if I think you have a crush on. Am I close?"

Gosh darn it all to heck, Joker! That wasn't what Kathy had wanted you to take away from her question!

She wasn't denying its accuracy, exactly. In fact, the fact that her hands had immediately flown to her face might have confirmed it. But still! That wasn't what she'd wanted you to guess!

"No, I--It doesn't--That wasn't--Umm..."

Good denial, Kathy. Joker would never guess your secret now.

"He's way too old for me! It would be inappropriate!"

"Called it!" Joker gloated. "...Which, in retrospect, is actually a good thing, because you could have been going for the 'am I a monster?' question..."

He gave her a shrug and a smirk. "So, then. Does what the island does to you mean anything? That's a hard question to answer, and your guess is as good as mind. Personally, I find it easiest to imagine that the island is, or is run by, some sort of deity-like being which is capricious, nigh-omnipotent, and a major dick. It explains a lot. As for the 'too old' problem? No it's not inappropriate. It's perfectly normal, and only natural. On your end. Depending on how old he is, if he likes you back? Super creepy."

"I've already realized that no one says 'yes' to that question," Kathy answered. "Everyone on the island seems to be firmly on Team 'It Doesn't Count If You're Crazy' when it comes to the 'Am I a Monster?' question."

Because it was way easier to talk about the possibility of monsterness than bring up Nick in any capacity.

"...I don't think you have to worry about him liking me back," she added in a lot mutter, trying to hide behind a book as she said it. "Considering I keep trying to seduce him then murder him when I'm all hopped up on the island-crazy, I'm pretty sure he's like a half minute away from getting a restraining order."
