Sports, Friday, Period 1, The Gym

"Apparently there's a carnival in town, and that means one thing: games of skill that are probably unexpectedly rigged. You know, pitching games where bottles are glued down, ring tosses where the rings only barely fit over the thing if you're lucky," Flash said. "And maybe they'll even have pop-a-shot."

"And with that in mind, we're doing basketball today. It helps that it's on of the few classic sports that can be easily played one-on-one," Flash said. "We're doing one-on-one half-court. The rules are simple. That big arc is the three point line. If you start with the ball, you start out behind that. You try to score by putting the ball through the hoop. Inside the arc is two points, outside is three. If you score, you get the ball again. If your opponent takes the ball away with a rebound, they have to take it back behind the arc before they can score. If they just steal it from you - so it doesn't hit the backboard or the rim - they don't need to take it back and they can just try to score."

Flash went on to explain dribbling the ball, the travel rule, cautioned people not to foul, and showed how to shoot instead of just wildly throwing the ball up into the air.

And then it was game time.

"We've got two half-courts, five students. You and you, this court. You and you, this court. Loser of the first court goes to the second court, loser of the second court takes a breather, and you're out right now so you'll sub in for loser of the first court. We're playing to 11 each game. Get to it!"
