Everything's a Weapon, Wednesday, Period 1

Today, Reno's class would find the Danger Shop set up as a library. No library in particular, really, mostly to keep any of the students from getting any ideas about just herding whatever the enemy of the week was into Special Collections and being done with it.

"Yeah, this week you've got some limited options," Reno began, gesturing around their surroundings. "You got books, the bookshelves themselves, and if you wander toward the back there's a few toys and pillows in the little kid section, yo. Remember rookies, no powers you can actively control and no outside weapons in this class - that includes lighters, Kathy. You gotta get by in this class by your wits and what you pick up in your surroundings, or else what the hell am I teaching this for, anyway?"

He gave his hands a clap and gave the group a wicked little grin, just as a wildcat roar cut through the room. Because sure, it was totally normal to unleash a pack of coeurls in a library, right?

Well, even if it wasn't, students were going to have to deal with it, now.

Celia didn't especially care, this week, if the class specifically referred to the making and using of weapons -- she was thinking defensively. Because giant cats. With giant claws.

So that was why she fairly immediately started pulling bookshelves over on their sides to form a little barricade where she could hide. "Anyone who helps can hide in my fort with me!" she called, grunting a little with the effort of pulling the stupid things over without magic.

She missed her magic so much, every week. So much.

Barry had already pulled several ink toner cartidges from the copy machines in the library, some scissors and some aluminum soda cans from the recycling bins when he heard Celia called out for help.

He yanked the power cord out of the copy machine and hurried over to Celia's position. After dropping his items behind the barricade, he started pulling the bookshelves with her.

"If we move fast I should be able to build something rather quickly," he replied.

"What in the hell is all of that?" Celia asked, looking in alarm at all of the ink cartridges. She didn't pause long, though, instead grabbing another bookshelf and pulling it over, trying to keep it from falling on herself. "And thank you. If I could use my magic, we'd be done already."

So unfair. So, so unfair. (And fine, she was learning, but still so unfair.)

"Thermite," Barry said with a grin as he assisted Celia with the other bookcase. "Or at least the making of thermite. Old printer cartridges have carbon and iron powder. Throw together that with the aluminum and we got ourselves a fucking party."

"Wait, like -- like a bomb?" Celia probably shouldn't have been so gleeful over that. "Barry, you're a genius."

Duh.

"Well it won't blow up the building," Barry said looking through some of the books on the bookshelves. "But it'll keep those a-hole cats away from us. I just need some paper for wadding and some ignition."

He frowned.

"I hate destroying books. I mean these are what people use to entertain their minds and-"

Barry saw something on the shelves and then grabbed a certain set of books from the shelves. He immediately began tearing them apart.

"Nevermind. They got the entire Dusk collection. Sparkly vampires fucking suck."

"Sparkly vampires?" Celia wrinkled her nose, but grabbed the thickest of the books and threw it behind the barricade. "They're not real, anyway. It's a -- what do you call it? Simu-something? I'd never destroy real books, but...leave me the bigger ones to throw at the damned cats, just in case."

"True, they're holograms but... Well the concept is not one I treasure," Barry said as he started cutting up some of the aluminum cans into small tiny strips.

"Well, of course not, but I also don't treasure the idea of being eaten by giant cats," Celia pointed out, huffing with annoyance as she lugged another heavy book over.

"Oh sure, if you want to prioritize things," Barry joked as he started to assemble some thermite... well bombs are too strong of a word. "Then again how often are you going to find yourself attacked by giant cats in a fucking library?"

"On this island?" Celia retorted, arching a brow. "I don't think we can rule it out, Barry."

"Well it's a fucking first for me," Barry said stripping the casing from the wires on the power cord from the copier. "And I once fought of an invasion of alien hitmen. Another time savages from another dimension. Then there was the US government black ops division..."

Barry could go on if you'd let him.

"I'm just glad that brain of yours doesn't count as a power," Celia said, interrupting him because really. She could hear the list another time. "As much as it seems to get you into trouble, we need it right now."

Re: Survive!

[identity profile] notaweenie.livejournal.com 2014-07-30 08:06 pm (UTC)(link)
"What? Are you calling me a troublemaker?" Barry asked with fake indignation as he pushed a plant out of the way to get to an outlet. "I think I might be offended."

He so wasn't offended.

"Oh, and nobody touch the bare wires unless they want to die."

See? Helpful. Not a troublemaker.

Alana knew a good offer when she heard one. She shoved a bookshelf into place and then vaulted over it to relative safety.

"Would it do any good to just, y'know, throw books at the cats?" she wondered.

"I hate to throw books," Celia said, a bit pained at the idea until she realized -- "But they're fake, anyway, aren't they? I say yes, then."

She started to stockpile the heavier books behind her barricade, starting with the complete works of Shakespeare.

"They're fake, plus even if they weren't you can usually buy more books," Alana pointed out. "You get eaten by a giant cat, you're just dead."

She began to copy what Celia was doing, building an arsenal of heavy books that didn't feel too awkward to throw.

[identity profile] pasunereveuse.livejournal.com 2014-07-30 07:30 pm (UTC)(link)
"That is an excellent point," Celia admitted. "And it isn't as though there's anything better to throw for ammunition, is there?"

She did grab a desk lamp, though, cord dragging along the ground. Maybe it could be useful.

"Not unless we want to throw our shoes, and we'd run out of those fast," Alana agreed grimly, then looked up at the lamp. "Okay, I swear I'm not a pyro, but maybe that could get things hot enough to light on fire."

Re: Survive!

[identity profile] pasunereveuse.livejournal.com 2014-07-30 07:53 pm (UTC)(link)
"Do newer lightbulbs work that way?" Celia wondered, peering at the lamp. "We use gas and oil lamps at home, and they're terribly flammable -- would just breaking this over some books while it's plugged in start a fire, you think?"

Alana shook her head no. "Not exactly, but I've seen paper and stuff get really hot if it's too close to a light bulb for too long," she explained. "I've never seen flames, but why not?"

Look, Minako never spent any time in a library that she was not being forced to spend. There was outside. Outside had sports and idols and not rows and rows of boooooks. Ugh.

Still, she found a sturdy bookcase and after a few test-tugs to make sure it would hold her weight, she scampered up it, careful not to displace the books so that the cats couldn't follow her up easily. Once at the top, the books were all pushed to the other end of the rack, to provide a counterbalance for her extra weight.

She was going to sit here. And frown at the kitties. Because she'd much rather be outside than trapped in a room made for studying.
