Anakin didn't look particularly thrilled to be there today--a late portal from Atton's galaxy had placed him in a layover holding room inexplicably full of nothing but prawn chips and he still smelled vaguely like imitation fish--but his hair looked amazing, so thanks for that, Bel.

"Today we're going podracing," Anakin said, "something that those of you who were in my previous class are already familiar with. Podracing is a sport on Tatooine--a bit like car racing on this planet but with faster vehicles that require much quicker reflexes--reflexes that humans, frankly, aren't built to have. I was the only human ever to podrace and not die immediately, but that's because I'm Force sensitive and don't rely on human reflexes. Since most of you do, I've tweaked the simulator so that you won't immediately explode."

How nice of you, Anakin.

He led them through an intensive discussion of how the controls worked, then stepped back to let them try out the Boonta Eve classic race course, complete with Tusken Raiders taking potshots at them on the third turn.

Because he wasn't that nice.

Whoo, podracing!

Four laps around the track without exploding! Anakin set the track record (of course) by finishing it in twenty minutes flat. A less insane pilot will take at least a half hour.

Will wasn't going to break any records but man, he couldn't help but pushing it to the limit. The speed was amazing and the tight turns got his adrenaline going big time.

He crashed a few times but managed to get through four laps eventually without hitting any walls. He was whooping it up the entire time.

PODRACING!!!

Who cared if there was crashing!

Though Kaylin had done this a few times by now and was clearly getting better at it!

Joker whooped and cursed and shouted his way through the course, and clocked in at 22:45. No exploding for the best pilot in the galaxy!

And that was counting the fact that by the fourth lap, he was comfortable enough with the controls that he was able to dip a side of the pod, kick up some loose rocks and gravel, and send it flying at the raiders.

And his amazing hair care regimen, and all of the free products his wife was probably stealing RIGHT NOW.

After class, Joker headed up to Anakin. "Hey, so... I've been wondering... When you're not here at the flight shed, are people allowed to use it?"

If you say "no", Anakin, you'll break his heart. But if you say "yes", he will never leave.

"Some people can," Anakin said carefully. "Responsible people. People who realize that if the flight sim breaks, detention will be the very least of their problems."

"People who are named 'Skywalker'?" Joker asked. "Look, this is your baby. I get that. I'm responsible -- I can lock up after I'm done, not touch anything I'm not supposed to, all the important things. If the controls wear out from being used too much, I'll help replace 'em."

Joker gestured at the simulator. "I love this baby almost as much as you do, and I barely know it yet. It's more realistic and immersive than what my omnitool can do, and that's exactly what I need right now. If you let me, I will take the absolute best care of it."

"...Unless you're afraid of having all your records beaten?" He knew that theoretically wasn't possible -- he just didn't care.

Anakin snickered. "I'm not afraid of that," he said. He handed over an extra key to the flight shed. "Be careful," he repeated. "This was given to me as a gift by a friend who died years ago. It's irreplaceable to me."

"I promise you, Professor Skywalker, sir, I will be very careful," Joker told him. "And in exchange, I've got simulations -- well, not 100% realistic, unfortunately, but reasonably close -- of a whole crapload of ships you've probably never heard of, if you want them."

He gave Anakin a smirk. "And you should be afraid for your records. Just because I don't have magic psychic powers doesn't mean I can't fly a ship."

T has fallen hardcore into Baby's First Fandom...which is old Strawberry Shortcake DVDs. And she shrieks when I want to watch ANYTHING ELSE.

I've managed to lose/break the two Barbie movies that somehow snuck into the house. I count that as a win!
